Developing an Engaging Online Engineering Ethics Course for Future Engineers

This chapter describes the process of developing both an engaging and motivating online ethics course for future engineers; and includes major concepts in engineering ethics beginning with why engineering students should study ethics at all. Next the various levels of ethics are examined, which include personal, organizational, and global ethics, and how each level then applies to the profession of engineering. Ethical behavior, ethical dilemmas and whistle-blowing are also defined and discussed. Ethical decision-making models, which are used to solve ethical dilemmas, are explained and examples are presented to engage students in the process. The significance of how engineers are held to higher standard and must adhere to both their professional code of ethics along with their organization's code of ethics is also emphasized. Understanding the role of ethical leadership and how it impacts an organization follows. Finally, engaging online methods for teaching ethics to engineering students will be explored throughout.

Problem-Based Learning has become an increasingly popular instructional method for a variety of disciplines at all levels. Many studies and meta-analyses of these studies have shown the efficacy of this method for developing knowledge and skills. I adopted this method for teaching Engineering Ethics at Carnegie Mellon University, which has as its main course objectives the development of moral reasoning skills, as well as collaboration and communication skills, with special attention given to ethical dilemmas that may arise in the normal course of an engineer’s professional career. In the most recent iteration of the course, I used the Engineering and Science Issues Test as a pretest and posttest to test the development of my students’ moral reasoning skills over the course of the semester. Based on the results of these tests, I argue that the students in my Engineering Ethics course did in fact significantly develop their moral reasoning skills.

Case overview Mr Qazi was sitting in his office in the Multan branch, reviewing his past month’s key performance indicators when he got a call from his Town Operations Supervisor, Mr Ahmed, based in Bahawalpur. Ahmed was recently promoted and transferred to Bahawalpur, from Multan branch. He informed Qazi about the huge inventory variances, which were not earlier reported by the previous Town Operations Supervisor, Mr Sagheer. Qazi was informed that differences were around 2.37% of total sales vs the allowable company limit of Zero inventory variance. Qazi was worried about whether to report these differences to higher management or not. He was very well aware that reporting might even cost him his job, and that of Sagheer too. He could not see any solution to the recovery of the inventory or cash against the same. Should Qazi take a risk and let go of Sagheer? Should he report the differences? Expected learning outcome 1. Demonstrate the fraud and integrity-related issues. Why and how happened? 2. Analyzed the role of organizational policies in the decision of blow the whistle. 3. Identify the behaviors that helped a whistle-blower. 4. Assess the ethical dilemmas in which professional duties may conflict with personal ethics. 5. Medical ethics training is as variable as it is widespread. Previous research has indicated that medical learners find systematic approaches to ethical dilemmas to be helpful. This article describes a bioethics educational module. It includes an overview of common bioethical principles and presents a tool for organizing health-care providers’ thinking and discussions about challenging ethical dilemmas. We discuss an area of bioethics that is often neglected, clinical integrity, and the role that a health-care provider’s clinical integrity plays in ethical decision-making. We provide several hypothetical ethical vignettes for practice and discussion using the clinical integrity tool. The article also describes how this module has been implemented in one medical education setting and provides suggestions for educators.

Many social marketers assume that because they are focusing on positive behaviour change they may expect fewer ethical issues arising from their work than conventional, commercial marketing. However, such a view is sadly too simplistic. This chapter focuses on the ethical issues facing social marketing. It argues that social marketers face an even greater potential for ethical issues and gives examples of these by focusing on targeting, stigmatization, victim blaming, coercion, and the use of financial incentives, among others. Recognizing the manifold potential for ethical challenges, and the lack of a decisive manner in which to resolve them easily, it then discusses ethical frameworks which can aid social marketers in formulating a response to potential issues and arriving at a considered decision. The chapter concludes by discussing the potential role of a professional code of ethics, and how this can aid future ethical decision-making.

Purpose:To examine the nature of ethical dilemmas most frequently reported by rehabilitation counselors in the private and public sectors and determine if significant differences exist in how practitioners experience ethical dilemmas in these two settings.Method:A mixed-methods internet-based survey design was utilized and included descriptive, qualitative, and quantitative approaches on a sample of rehabilitation counselors (N= 141) via an instrument created by the researchers.Results:The results indicate that there are clear differences between both the nature and frequency of ethical dilemmas encountered by practitioners in the private and public sectors of rehabilitation counseling. Findings indicate that there are significant differences not only in the frequency and importance each group attributes to ethical dilemmas but also in the types of ethical dilemmas experienced.Conclusion:Rehabilitation counselors in the private and public sectors practice in different environments (with varied laws, rehabilitation goals, duration of services), and minimal consideration has been given to the diversity of ethical dilemmas that these practitioners encounter in their professional roles. The inclusion of Section F in the 2010 CRCC Code of Ethics was the rehabilitation counseling field’s first attempt to address the differing nature of ethical dilemmas faced by private rehabilitation counselors in their practice. Further study is warranted to examine the dynamics that underlie the ethical decision-making process as well exploring the differences between these two settings.

Increasing numbers of occupational therapists are engaging in writing expert witness reports in personal injury cases. This article airs some of the conflicts and ethical dilemmas that may arise when working in this field, and considers the position of the occupational therapist in relation to the widely accepted legal view of the role of the expert witness and the College of Occupational Therapists' Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct. The article follows the order of the College of Occupational Therapists' Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct and a number of potential difficulties are highlighted, although by no means all. Where possible, an attempt is made to offer a solution that would enable the occupational therapist to maintain professional integrity. Above all, the article is intended to stimulate discussion and debate which will be of benefit to people already working in this field and to those entering it In the future.

Building an ethical culture is challenging and a basic requirement of the companies to embed transparency in their systems, creating a positive image; serving the internal and external communities. This paper based on detailed interviews of 12 family owned businesses over a period of 16 months explores how these companies build the ethical culture, identifying the ethical culture sustainability triggers, challenges and role of religion in such practices. The values, culture, community and social norms are identified as major ingredients of a sustainable ethical culture development and implementation of the ethical policies and procedures require institutional and structural mechanisms for effectiveness in family owned businesses. The findings at numerous occasions are in contrast to the literature, whereas, in other instances are similar. The religion, society, family image, the entrepreneurs themselves and their family members play a vital role. Non-interference in private matters of the employees, whistle blowing, code of ethics, training and awareness creation and a number of other factors play a leading role in ethical culture development in family businesses.

On September 25, 1972, at San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Delegate Assembly of the National Rehabilitation Counseling Association adopted a draft of a Code of Ethics for Rehabilitation Counselors. The provisions of the Code were based on responses from many members of the Association who had been invited to report ethical dilemmas they had encountered and to suggest acceptable solutions to those dilemmas. A first draft was published in the Summer, 1971, issue of The Journal of Applied Rehabilitation Counseling. Many additional members responded to the invitation to suggest changes in that draft. It was a revised version of the first draft that was adopted at San Juan.While the vote for adoption was almost unanimous, there were some questions raised during the discussion at San Juan and during the three years that the Code was in preparation that should be shared with all Association members. The questions might be placed in three generic types: (a) Does the profession really need a code of ethics? (b) Can a profession that is generally composed of persons who are employees, as opposed to private practitioners, reasonably expect to set its own ethical standards and abide by them? (c) Would it not be preferable merely to state some very broad principles of ethical behavior and refrain from defining for the members what those principles should mean in practice? The attempt will be made here to summarize the apparent rationales of these questions and what seemed to be the conclusions of the Delegate Assembly concerning them.

This paper investigates the ethical environment in which tax professionals operate by eliciting practicing tax professionals' personal experiences with ethical dilemmas in tax engagements. Since organizational culture can play a role in creating an environment where ethical decision making is encouraged (Arnold et al. 1999, 2000; Booth and Schulz 2004), we expected that tax professionals' self-identified ethical dilemmas would be related to their assessments of the ethical environments of their firms. Based on 146 responses from practicing tax professionals, most participants rated their ethical environment as very strong. Additionally, the 84 participants who did not describe a self-identified ethical dilemma rated the ethical environment of their firms significantly stronger than the 62 who reported a dilemma. Implications of this study include an emphasis on in-house ethics training and explicitly including rewards and sanctions regarding ethical behavior in performance evaluation systems.
