Engineering and Construction Projects Characteristics

Companies try to use better techniques to deal with complex projects. The maturity of companies to apply these better techniques can guarantee project success or not. The environment, where the engineering and construction project is developed, also has influence over the success. The maturity of a company's project management processes is also a factor of success. This chapter aims to talk about concepts related to engineering and construction initiatives.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to develop a decision matrix for green project management processes (GPMPs) in commercial construction projects. GPMPs can assist in decoding all of the information required to make green-conscious decisions at various stages of a project. Design/methodology/approach – Integrate the environmental factors into the traditional project management processes (PMPs) of major construction projects. The integrated product is worked into a process index, and the analytical hierarchy processes (AHP) method is used to prioritize the GPMPs according to pre-set criteria. Findings – Research established the theoretical backing of green practices integration in the traditional PMPs, by creating an AHP weighted GPMP index that is linked to usable decision matrix. Originality/value – Develops a fresh methodology to facilitate green decision-making in the project management of commercial construction projects.

The relationship between Project Management (PM) and Sustainable Development (SD) is tested in this chapter through its application on the construction industry. When PM is embedded in construction projects, it has the capacity to be a significant leverage point of great influence, and it becomes one of the cornerstones for rethinking the relationships between PM, SD, and the Construction Industry. The work presented discusses the need for integrating sustainable development into project management processes to ensure a better outcome for the construction industry, which is directly related to the degradation of our quality of life on the economic, social, and environmental levels. The author explores the origins and philosophies behind sustainability, the core of project management processes, the strategic implications of the construction industry practices, and puts forward the “systems thinking and points of leverage” approach to facilitate an efficient environment of integration. Thinking and acting sustainably requires not only incremental change but also a revolution in approach, a shift of perspective; sustainable project management processes are possible to achieve.

Project success is what must be done for the project to be acceptable to the client, stakeholders and end-users who will be affected by the project. The study of project success and the critical success factors (CSFs) are the means adopted to improve the effectiveness of project. This research is conducted in an effort to identify which factors influence the success of project accomplishment in Jordan. This study has selected, through an extensive literature review and interviews, (83) factors categorized into (7) main groups that the questionnaire respondents were required to score. The responses from 66 professionals with an average of 15 years of experience in different types of construction projects in Jordan were collected and analyzed using SPSS and the most important factors for success for various success criteria are presented depending on the relative importance index to rank the categories. The research revealed the significant groups of factors are: factors related to Client , factors related to Contractor’s, factors related to Project Manager (PM), and factors related to Project management. In addition the top ten sub factors are: Assertion of the client towards short time of the project, availability of skilled labor, Assertion of the client towards high level of the quality, capability of the client in taking risk, previous experience of the PM in similar projects, previous experience of the contractor in similar projects, decision making by the client/ the client’s representative at the right time, assertion of client towards low cost of project, experience in project management in previous projects, and flow of the information among parties. The findings of this study might be useful to construction project participants in taking decisions leading to successful finishing of construction projects in Jordan.

Purpose. Research of methodological and practical aspects of improving the efficiency of construction project management using innovative approaches and determination of managerial reliability applying the principles of systems engineering in the conditions of transformation of economic relations of the construction industry. Methodology. An important role in the study is played by the formation of knowledge and skills to use a modern project approach to solving problems of management processes at different levels, focusing these processes on achieving end results with minimal time and money and mastering the methodology of construction project management as a new progressive tools in the field of construction organization. Findings. The paper analyzes the management processes of construction projects, usually due to a number of factors that affect the progress of the construction project. Methods for evaluating the effectiveness of investment construction projects, which are based on a single methodological basis, are considered. The results of introduction of the basic principles of system engineering as innovative approaches of increase of administrative reliability are substantiated. Originality. Based on the principles of systems engineering, as well as the laws of project management identified ways to improve the efficiency of construction project management through optimal choice of management and organizational and technological solutions through the ability of contractors to organize work by planning and regulating resources (labor, material, financial, technical) their interaction (intensity, sequence, combination) in order to achieve a given result. Practical value. The application of the concept of construction project management and the use of the principle of systems engineering is one of the main ways to increase the efficiency of construction project management to ensure the competitiveness of construction projects in the transformation of the construction services market.

PurposeIn the construction industry, site managers are responsible for the day-to-day on-site running of a project. Site managers are required not only to ensure that work is done safely, on time, within budget and to the right quality standards, but also to manage any delays or problems encountered on-site during a construction project. Thus, a site manager has a significant position in the success of a construction project. However, there is a lack of studies considering the role of the leadership style of a site manager in construction project success. In this study, not only the effect of the transformational leadership (TL) style of site managers on the success of construction projects is assessed, but also the mediating role of team-building (TB) and team innovation between TL and project success is studied.Design/methodology/approachThe proposed hypotheses are tested by comparing the performance criteria of construction projects with the TL style of site managers. The success criteria of the projects are examined using project documents and client opinions, and the TL of site managers, TB aspects and team innovation in projects are assessed by asking from their subordinates. The Pearson correlation coefficient is employed to investigate the relation between every two variables.FindingsThe results illustrate that the TL of a site manager is directly related to project success; thus, the findings would confirm the importance of selecting appropriate site managers for construction projects. Moreover, while there is a mediating role of TB between TL and construction project success, team innovation does not have a mediating impact in design-bid-build (DBB) construction projects.Originality/valueAs there is a lack of studies assessing the TL effects on the success of construction projects and the significant role of site managers, this study is one of the first researches that tested these impacts and evaluated the mediating role of TB and team innovation between TL and project performance.
