Performance-based assessment strongly relies on the observation of children's behavior, preschool teachers' objectivity and accuracy, and presents a significant part of documenting children's development. Therefore, the main aim of this chapter is to analyze the PBA-use and its evaluation by Croatian preschool teachers and students from the Faculty of Teacher Education, University of Rijeka. 60 undergraduate students and 64 preschool teachers participated in this empirical research by filling out self-rated questionnaires. As it was expected, students and preschool teachers demonstrated positive attitudes toward PBA and its documentation in general and if it is applied (will be applied) in practice. However, the students' positive attitudes, satisfaction and perceived usefulness of PBA are significantly higher than those of preschool teachers. These last findings definitely imply the need for modifications of the policy of the preschool education system, as well as significant changes that should be done in practice and relevant study programs.

Preschool teachers play a very important but highly sensitive role in preschool children’s play. It is therefore very important to build their play competences in a quality way. As this is not easily achieved, the main objective of the present study was to analyse the roles of students of preschool education in children’s play. The study included 36 students enrolled at the Faculty of Teacher Education in Rijeka, Croatia. Through a qualitative analysis of the students’ preparations for their practice, it was determined that the majority of students use didactic play and play with rules with children. Although the students demonstrated the expected role in children’s play, which positively influenced the educational work and the overall well-being of the children, some of the students were not decisive. Thus, the question arises as to how to improve the acquisition of play competences in students of preschool education.

Abstract Inclusion is a compulsory educational practice for preschool children with disabilities in Turkey. In this article, first, the definition of inclusion is provided. Second, the benefits of inclusion are summarized using the international literature. Third, a summary of studies conducted in Turkey in relation to inclusive preschool education is presented followed by a description of the legal basis for inclusion in Turkey. The research focused on inclusive preschool education in Turkey was examined under five categories: (1) opinions and attitudes of preschool teachers and teacher candidates towards inclusion, (2) classroom practices, (3) social skills, (4) research summaries and literature reviews and (5) other studies. An examination of these studies has shown that preschool teachers and teacher candidates have positive attitudes towards inclusion, but they need more information for successful implementation of inclusion. Moreover, preschool teachers implement certain practices with respect to in-class transitions, however, they need more support to apply all recommended practices noted in the literature. In addition, social skills programs provided to children with special needs were beneficial. Recommendations for future practice are presented at the end of the paper.

The aim of this article is to generate knowledge about language ideologies in teacher education in Sweden from a critical perspective. In order to achieve an equal education, we argue that it is important that teachers are able to develop an approach and pedagogy that can support all pupils despite their linguistic background to achieve the goals in school. The focus of this article is on language ideologies in teacher education for preschool teachers and how ideological and implementational spaces for language diversity is constructed and negotiated in the education. The empirical material was produced during four years through observations, individual interviews and focus group interviews with educators in the teacher education and a group of ten students in the preschool teacher program, who were admitted to the program based on their migration background. The analysis shows that there is a monolingual standardized norm for Swedish both prevailing in the teacher education and pointing towards their future jobs as preschool teachers. In order to become legitimate members in the group of preschool teacher students and a future community of practice of preschool teachers, the students adjusted to this norm. We identified ideological spaces for multilingualism in the education but the possibilities to implement them were few. Thus, there was a tension between pluralism and diversity on the one side and a strong demand for adjustment to a monolingual standardized language norm for minority students on the other side. As teacher educators we realize the value and necessity of a common language norm, and we are as scholars reproducing such norms of academic language through the writing of this article. At the same time, we argue that it is important to include a multilingual pedagogy in the teacher education that can i) include and support the linguistic repertoires of students in the program and ii) prepare students for their future work in language heterogenous preschools and schools

The Federal State Educational Standard for a new generation (FSES of HE 3++) sets out universal and general professional competences for university graduates. Educational structures can define professional competences independently and describe them as professional standards. A means of solving this challenge is to use a group of assessment experts – one of the core academic qualitative methods. This collective expert opinion helps to develop an algorithm for pedagogical competence expertise and for generalizing their quantitative representation and content. The article presents methods for the structure and content of professional competences for undergraduate students majoring in preschool education. These include the group expert assessment method and the procedure for reconciling the determined competences with current legal documents for preschool education. The research focused on competence-based and qualimetric approaches aimed at modeling the outcomes of education. The “framework” sets out the structure of competences that act as the professional quality standards for higher education. The group expert assessment made it possible to identify groups of professional competences and elaborate their content. The authors have determined the academic expertise for the structure and content of professional competences for students who are the future preschool teachers. This involved the examination and harmonization of the requirements of the Professional Standards for “Teachers (teaching practice in the field of preschool, primary, lower secondary, upper secondary education) (a pre-school teacher, a teacher),” and the Federal State Educational Standard for preschool education. These stages can be implemented in developing the structure and content of professional competencies for students majoring in other areas and profiles of training, which adds to their practical value and usefulness. The findings can be used by university instructors to identify and develop professional competences for undergraduate students following their future job functions and actions as outlined by professional standards.

Schools are considered the ideal place to provide mental health services. International literature highlights the importance of early detection of mental health problems and the implementation of preventive interventions in school context. The present study aims to explore preschool teachers’ views regarding the involvement of the school in the prevention and treatment of students' mental health problems in preschool education and the ways in which the school can assist in supporting students. The sample of the research consisted of 115 preschool teachers. The method of data collection was a questionnaire. The results of the research showed that the majority of teachers believe that the school should be involved in the prevention and treatment of children's mental health problems. In addition, they defined the characteristics of mental health in preschool children. Simultaneously, they argue that enhancing a child's self-confidence, developing positive interpersonal relationships between teachers and students and collaborative relationships with parents are the main ways in which the school can support students with mental health problems. Research findings could be utilized in designing mental health promotion interventions.

Article visualizations:

This article attempts to explore the use of first language (Arabic) in the Libyan EFL classrooms as well as teachers' and students' attitudes towards using it. To this end, 5 Libyan EFL teachers and 143 Libyan EFL undergraduate students from the English department of Sebha University took part in the study. Data were gathered through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The findings of the study indicated that the Libyan EFL students had positive attitudes towards using Arabic in the classroom to some degree; however, they were in favor of using English more than Arabic. It was also found that the students employed Arabic frequently to translate words from English into Arabic. The results also reported that the Libyan EFL teachers used Arabic in their classrooms to accomplish many purposes such as helping students to understand, giving instructions, emphasizing information and giving the meaning of new and unfamiliar words. Additionally, teachers held positive attitudes towards the use of Arabic inside the classroom, but they were of the opinion that Arabic can be only used in certain cases and it should not be overused.
