There is an explosion in the amount of data that organizations generate, collect, and store. Organizations are gradually relying more on new technologies to access, analyze, summarize, and interpret information intelligently. Data mining, therefore, has become a research area with increased importance (Amaratunga & Cabrera, 2004). Data mining is the search for valuable information in large volumes of data (Hand, Mannila, & Smyth, 2001). It can discover hidden relationships, patterns, and interdependencies and generate rules to predict the correlations, which can help the organizations make critical decisions faster or with a greater degree of confidence (Gargano & Ragged, 1999). There is a wide range of data mining techniques, which has been successfully used in many applications. This article is an attempt to provide an overview of existing data mining applications. The article begins by explaining the key tasks that data mining can achieve. It then moves to discuss applications domains that data mining can support. The article identifies three common application domains, including bioinformatics, electronic commerce, and search engines. For each domain, how data mining can enhance the functions will be described. Subsequently, the limitations of current research will be addressed, followed by a discussion of directions for future research.

With the explosion in the amount of data produced in commercial environments, organizations are faced with the challenge of how to collect, analyze, and manage such large volumes of data. As a consequence, they have to rely upon new technologies to efficiently and automatically manage this process. Data mining is an example of one such technology, which can help to discover hidden knowledge from an organization’s databases with a view to making better business decisions (Changchien & Lu, 2001). Data mining, or knowledge discovery from databases (KDD), is the search for valuable information within large volumes of data (Hand, Mannila & Smyth, 2001), which can then be used to predict, model or identify interrelationships within the data (Urtubia, Perez-Correa, Soto & Pszczolkowski, 2007). By utilizing data mining techniques, organizations can gain the ability to predict future trends in both the markets and customer behaviors. By providing detailed analyses of current markets and customers, data mining gives organizations the opportunity to better meet the needs of its customers. With such significance in mind, this chapter aims to investigate how data mining techniques can be applied in customer relationship management (CRM). This chapter is organized as follows. Firstly, an overview of the main functionalities data mining technologies can provide is given. The following section presents application examples where data mining is commonly applied within the domain, with supporting evidence as to how each enhances CRM processes. Finally, current issues and future research trends are discussed before the main conclusions are presented.

Data mining has proven to be an important technique in terms of efficient information extraction, classification, clustering, and prediction of future trends from a database. The valuable properties of data mining have been put to use in many applications. One such application is Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), where effective use of data mining techniques has been made by researchers. An exhaustive survey on application of data mining in SDLC has not been done in the past. In this chapter, the authors carry out an in-depth survey of existing literature focused towards application of data mining in SDLC and propose a framework that will classify the work done by various researchers in identification of prominent data mining techniques used in various phases of SDLC and pave the way for future research in the emerging area of data mining in SDLC.

This chapter presents data mining techniques that make use of metrics defined on the set of partitions of finite sets. Partitions are naturally associated with object attributes and major data mining problem such as classification, clustering, and data preparation benefit from an algebraic and geometric study of the metric space of partitions. The metrics we find most useful are derived from a generalization of the entropic metric. We discuss techniques that produce smaller classifiers, allow incremental clustering of categorical data and help user to better prepare training data for constructing classifiers. Finally, we discuss open problems and future research directions.

This book chapter provides a state-of-the-art survey of visual data mining techniques used for collaborative filtering. The chapter begins with a discussion on various visual data mining techniques along with an analysis of the state-of-the-art visual data mining techniques used by researchers as well as in the industry. Collaborative filtering approaches are presented along with an analysis of the state-of-the-art collaborative filtering approaches currently in use in the industry. Visual data mining can provide benefit to existing data mining techniques by providing the users with visual exploration and interpretation of data. The users can use these visual interpretations for further data mining. This chapter dealt with state-of-the-art visual data mining technologies that are currently in use apart. The chapter also includes the key section of the discussion on the latest trends in visual data mining for collaborative filtering.

Summary To maximize the opportunities for the adoption of newly developed products, there is a need to better understand how psychological factors have an impact on the acceptance and deployment of innovative technology in industry. While there is extensive general literature on the psychological factors that influence consumer behavior and the use of new technologies, there seemed to be very limited understanding of this topic, specifically relating to the upstream energy sector. A literature review was conducted to (1) identify what, if any, research has been conducted in relation to the psychological factors influencing technology adoption and deployment in the oil and gas (O&G) industry and (2) identify what interventions have been developed to support technology adoption in O&G. A literature search was undertaken, and given the limited research anticipated, minimum selection criteria were applied on the basis of Cochrane quality control (Higgins and Green 2011). In the 17 articles that met the search criteria, there was limited discussion of the psychological factors that have an impact on O&G technology adoption. The articles were subject to Braun and Clarke (2006) thematic analysis, producing a list of psychological factors that influence technology adoption in O&G. Only five psychological factors were identified: personality (e.g., exploration traits and risk aversion), attitude (e.g., trust and not-invented-here syndrome), social (e.g., social norms), cognition (e.g., risk perception), and psychological factors at an organizational level (leadership and organizational culture). In addition, our review identified a small number of interventions that were developed and deployed to support technology adoption in O&G. Given the early stages of this research area, combined with the relevance for technology innovation in upstream O&G, our review adds to the literature by identifying an initial framework of the key psychological factors. This essential set of factors can be used to direct future research, as well as to support effective interventions aimed at supporting the introduction of new technology.
