Using WfMS to Support Unstructured Activities

In this chapter the authors propose a solution to handle unexpected exceptions in WfMS. They characterize these events deeply and recognize that some of them require immediate reaction and users can not plan their response in advance. Current approaches that handle unexpected exceptions are categorized by their resilience property and it is identified that supporting unstructured activities becomes critical to react to these events. Their proposed system is able to change its behaviour from supporting structured activities to supporting unstructured activities and back to its original mode. They also describe how the system was implemented and we discuss a concrete scenario where it was tested.

Three children were followed longitudinally for 12 months, between their 11th and 22nd months of life, to document their development of the linguistic expression of the agent concept. The children were observed approximately once a month in play and structured activities designed to elicit nonverbal and linguistic behaviors indicative of the children's awareness of the agent concept. This study describes how the linguistic behaviors (i.e., vocalizations, single-word utterances, and multiword utterances) were paired with emerging nonverbal agentive behaviors over the 12-month period. The children's first vocalizations did not appear to be consistently associated with any nonverbal agentive behaviors. Later vocalizations were consistently paired with directive nonverbal agentive behaviors. With the emergence of the mature cognitive notion of agent, the children produced single-word utterances coding the agent in agent-action-recipient events. And finally, for two of the children, multiword utterances coding two aspects of agent-action-recipient events were produced. The evolution of paired nonverbal agentive behaviors and different utterance types has provided evidence supporting the linguistic expression of an underlying cognitive notion.

Workflows to produce dental products by using CAD/CAM technology are very complex. Each patient needs an individual restoration. The challenge is to provide a patient individual production aiming at a price of mass production. But every single job has to run through an individual development as well manufacturing process. Typically, three stakeholders are involved in the workflow. The dentist performs the treatment and defines requirements for restoration. The dental laboratory plans the workflow and designs the reconstruction by using a dental CAD system. Subsequently, a milling center produces the restoration. Because of these highly heterogeneous workflows, diverse data streams and incompatibilities result. Often improper partners and resources are involved in the workflow. This fact is a significant source for errors. An additional complication is that errors are often discovered in late phases of the workflow. To avoid high costs and unacceptable delivery times, the aim is to develop a new concept for integrated workflow planning. The concept depends on three parts: Federative dental data management (FDDM) as a basic approach, including anticipated logic and structured activities. The federative data management provides a loosely coupling of heterogeneous systems crossing enterprise borders by using web technology. The FDDM service depends on APP technology. Each participant applies its specialized APP: FDDMz (dentist), FDDMd (dental laboratory) and FDDMf (milling center). FDDM services enable a continuously integrated workflow throughout the whole process of a patient individual production. Each participating enterprise is able to register its available processes and resources. Information about resources like 3D dental scanner or milling machines are able to add, according to a global data model schema. This schema depends on an integrated information model with eight partial models: Collaboration, resource, process, workflow, requirements, product, work preparation and production model. This integrated information model provides dental information including interlinked objects. Through a proper anticipation logic, conclusions about later phases can be anticipated already at early phases. The last conceptual part is workflow management on frame of structured activities. By combining the information network with the anticipation logic, filtering of appropriate partners, processes, resources and sequences is supported. Next, a prototypical implementation is demonstrated exemplarily. This concept delivers an important contribution to increase process reliability and quality as well as to reduce delivery times and costs for digital dental workflows.

Chapter 7 examines how temples were constructed and maintained to enable trainees to attain a transcendent spiritual state through monastic discipline and studies of various kinds of sacred writings paired with carefully structured activities of everyday practice. It stresses the significance of Zen temples by examining the role of monks as those who depart from their home to retreat from ordinary society, replacing ordinary family relationships with a new sense of lineal identity and hierarchy in the monastery. This chapter also discusses regional transfers brought about by evangelical teachers to various centers of secular power, such as the capital cities of Hangzhou in China and Kyoto in Japan, or hubs of transit, such as the ports of Ningbo in China and Hakata in Japan, where all wayfarers embarked or disembarked from their journeys.

The developmental histories of 32 players in the Australian Football League (AFL), independently classified as either expert or less skilled in their perceptual and decision-making skills, were collected through a structured interview process and their year-on-year involvement in structured and deliberate play activities retrospectively determined. Despite being drawn from the same elite level of competition, the expert decision-makers differed from the less skilled in having accrued, during their developing years, more hours of experience in structured activities of all types, in structured activities in invasion-type sports, in invasion-type deliberate play, and in invasion activities from sports other than Australian football. Accumulated hours invested in invasion-type activities differentiated between the groups, suggesting that it is the amount of invasion-type activity that is experienced and not necessarily intent (skill development or fun) or specificity that facilitates the development of perceptual and decision-making expertise in this team sport.

Background:The absolute energy cost of activities in children increases with age due to greater muscle mass and physical capability associated with growth and developmental maturation; however, there is a paucity of data in preschool-aged children. Study aims were 1) to describe absolute and relative energy cost of common activities of preschool-aged children in terms of VO2, energy expenditure (kilocalories per minute) and child-specific metabolic equivalents (METs) measured by room calorimetry for use in the Youth Compendium of Physical Activity, and 2) to predict METs from age, sex and heart rate (HR).Methods:Energy expenditure (EE), oxygen consumption (VO2), HR, and child-METs of 13 structured activities were measured by room respiration calorimetry in 119 healthy children, ages 3 to 5 years.Results:EE, VO2, HR, and child-METs are presented for 13 structured activities ranging from sleeping, sedentary, low-, moderate- to high-active. A significant curvilinear relationship was observed between child-METs and HR (r2 = .85; P = .001).Conclusion:Age-specific child METs for 13 structured activities in preschool-aged children will be useful to extend the Youth Compendium of Physical Activity for research purposes and practical applications. HR may serve as an objective measure of MET intensity in preschool-aged children.

We have been engaged in running token economies at St. Crispin Hospital for four years; the initial impetus coming from a Research Grant from Oxford Regional Health Authority at the instigation of the Principal Psychologist here. The patient group we have concentrated on, is the severely chronic long stay male, averaging 25 to 30 years in the institution. In consequence, the goals of such schemes have so far been towards rehabilitation within the institution, by increasing the level of activities of chronically withdrawn patients and by restoring some of the most personal responsibilities for themselves, through the use of structured activities.
