Network-Aided Session Management for Adaptive Context-Aware Multiparty Communications

Recent years, from about the early 2000s, have been characterized by global broadband penetration, Fixed-Mobile-Convergence, Triple Play, and content provisioning over All-IP multimedia networks. Increasing demands in group-based multimedia sessions and market forces are fuelling the design of the future Internet, which is expected to fundamentally change the networking landscape in the upcoming years. Context, understood as sensed information that changes over time, has already led, to some extent, to service adaptation in terms of recognizing and using simple context, e.g. location. Context may also include network or personal state, location, or weather. To allow for session adaptation, it is important to use network and user context to enhance the existing service, keeping the user satisfied throughout the session.

Recent video captioning models aim at describing all events in a long video. However, their event descriptions do not fully exploit the contextual information included in a video because they lack the ability to remember information changes over time. To address this problem, we propose a novel context-aware video captioning model that generates natural language descriptions based on the improved video context understanding. We introduce an external memory, differential neural computer (DNC), to improve video context understanding. DNC naturally learns to use its internal memory for context understanding and also provides contents of its memory as an output for additional connection. By sequentially connecting DNC-based caption models (DNC augmented LSTM) through this memory information, our consecutively connected DNC architecture can understand the context in a video without explicitly searching for event-wise correlation. Our consecutive DNC is sequentially trained with its language model (LSTM) for each video clip to generate context-aware captions with superior quality. In experiments, we demonstrate that our model provides more natural and coherent captions which reflect previous contextual information. Our model also shows superior quantitative performance on video captioning in terms of BLEU (BLEU@4 4.37), METEOR (9.57), and CIDEr-D (28.08).

With the popularity of mobile services, an effective context-aware mobile service adaptation is becoming more and more important for operators. In this paper, we propose a Co-evolution eXtended Classifier System (CXCS) to perform context-aware mobile service adaptation. Our key idea is to learn user context, match adaptation rule, and provide the best suitable mobile services for users. Different from previous adaptation schemes, our proposed CXCS can produce a new user's initial classifier population to quicken its converging speed. Moreover, it can make the current user to predict which service should be selected, corresponding to an uncovered context. We compare CXCS based on a common mobile service adaptation scenario with other five adaptation schemes. The results show the adaptation accuracy of CXCS is higher than 70% on average, and outperforms other schemes.

Abstract. Summary: Background: We aimed at estimating the agreement between the Medicap® (photo-optical) and Radiometer® (electro-chemical) sensors during exercise transcutaneous oxygen pressure (tcpO2) tests. Our hypothesis was that although absolute starting values (tcpO2rest: mean over 2 minutes) might be different, tcpO2-changes over time and the minimal value of the decrease from rest of oxygen pressure (DROPmin) results at exercise shall be concordant between the two systems. Patients and methods: Forty seven patients with arterial claudication (65 + / - 7 years) performed a treadmill test with 5 probes each of the electro-chemical and photo-optical devices simultaneously, one of each system on the chest, on each buttock and on each calf. Results: Seventeen Medicap® probes disconnected during the tests. tcpO2rest and DROPmin values were higher with Medicap® than with Radiometer®, by 13.7 + / - 17.1 mm Hg and 3.4 + / - 11.7 mm Hg, respectively. Despite the differences in absolute starting values, changes over time were similar between the two systems. The concordance between the two systems was approximately 70 % for classification of test results from DROPmin. Conclusions: Photo-optical sensors are promising alternatives to electro-chemical sensors for exercise oximetry, provided that miniaturisation and weight reduction of the new sensors are possible.

The macro-comparative decoupling literature has often sought to test the arguments made by the treadmill of production (TP) and ecological modernization (EM) theories. However, due to data limitations, these studies have been limited to analyzing the years after 1960. Given that both theories discuss historical processes operating before 1960, analyzing pre-1960 data is warranted to more comprehensively test the propositions made by both theories. We assess the long-term relationship between economic growth and CO2 emissions from 1870 to 2014 using a sample of global North nations. We use Prais-Winsten regression models with time interactions to assess whether, when, and how much CO2 emissions have decoupled from economic growth over time. We find that significant relative decoupling has occurred twice since 1870: during the last 30 years of the nineteenth century, the timing of which is contrary to what both the EM and TP theories might expect, and after 1970. We also observe that the relationship remained relatively stable from the turn of the twentieth century to approximately 1970, which aligns with the arguments made by the classical TP work. We conclude that shifts in the global organization of production have shaped the magnitude of the economic growth–CO2 emissions relationship and its changes over time, which has implications for climate mitigation policy.
