Data clustering methods have been used extensively for image segmentation in the past decade. In one of the author's previous works, this paper has established that combining the traditional clustering algorithms with a meta-heuristic like the Firefly Algorithm improves the stability of the output as well as the speed of convergence. It is well known now that the Euclidean distance as a measure of similarity has certain drawbacks and so in this paper we replace it with kernel functions for the study. In fact, the authors combined Rough Fuzzy C-Means (RFCM) and Rough Intuitionistic Fuzzy C-Means (RIFCM) with Firefly algorithm and replaced Euclidean distance with either Gaussian or Hyper-tangent or Radial basis Kernels. This paper terms these algorithms as Gaussian Kernel based rough Fuzzy C-Means with Firefly Algorithm (GKRFCMFA), Hyper-tangent Kernel based rough Fuzzy C-Means with Firefly Algorithm (HKRFCMFA), Gaussian Kernel based rough Intuitionistic Fuzzy C-Means with Firefly Algorithm (GKRIFCMFA) and Hyper-tangent Kernel based rough Intuitionistic Fuzzy C-Means with Firefly Algorithm (HKRIFCMFA), Radial Basis Kernel based rough Fuzzy C-Means with Firefly Algorithm (RBKRFCMFA) and Radial Basis Kernel based rough Intuitionistic Fuzzy C-Means with Firefly Algorithm (RBKRIFCMFA). In order to establish that these algorithms perform better than the corresponding Euclidean distance-based algorithms, this paper uses measures such as DB and Dunn indices. The input data comprises of three different types of images. Also, this experimentation varies over different number of clusters.

To improve the effectiveness and robustness of the existing semisupervised fuzzy clustering for segmenting image corrupted by noise, a kernel space semisupervised fuzzy C-means clustering segmentation algorithm combining utilizing neighborhood spatial gray information with fuzzy membership information is proposed in this paper. The mean intensity information of neighborhood window is embedded into the objective function of the existing semisupervised fuzzy C-means clustering, and the Lagrange multiplier method is used to obtain its iterative expression corresponding to the iterative solution of the optimization problem. Meanwhile, the local Gaussian kernel function is used to map the pixel samples from the Euclidean space to the high-dimensional feature space so that the cluster adaptability to different types of image segmentation is enhanced. Experiment results performed on different types of noisy images indicate that the proposed segmentation algorithm can achieve better segmentation performance than the existing typical robust fuzzy clustering algorithms and significantly enhance the antinoise performance.

Data clustering plays a very important role in Data mining, machine learning and Image processing areas. As modern day databases have inherent uncertainties, many uncertainty-based data clustering algorithms have been developed in this direction. These algorithms are fuzzy c-means, rough c-means, intuitionistic fuzzy c-means and the means like rough fuzzy c-means, rough intuitionistic fuzzy c-means which base on hybrid models. Also, we find many variants of these algorithms which improve them in different directions like their Kernelised versions, possibilistic versions, and possibilistic Kernelised versions. However, all the above algorithms are not effective on big data for various reasons. So, researchers have been trying for the past few years to improve these algorithms in order they can be applied to cluster big data. The algorithms are relatively few in comparison to those for datasets of reasonable size. It is our aim in this chapter to present the uncertainty based clustering algorithms developed so far and proposes a few new algorithms which can be developed further.

<p>Imaging plays an important role in medical field like medical diagnosis, treatment planning and patient follow up. Image segmentation is the backbone process to accomplish these tasks by dividing an image in to meaningful parts which share similar properties.  Medical Resonance Imaging (MRI) is primary diagnostic technique to do image segmentation. There are several techniques proposed for image segmentation of different parts of body like Region growing, Thresholding, Clustering methods and Soft computing techniques  (Fuzzy Logic, Neural Network, Genetic Algorithm). The proposed research work uses Grey level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) for texture feature extraction, ANFIS(Adaptive Network Fuzzy inference System) plus  Genetic Algorithm for feature selection and FCM(Fuzzy C-Means) for segmentation of  Astrocytoma (Brain Tumor) with all four Grades. The comparative study between FCM, FCM plus K-mean, Genetic Algorithm, ANFIS and proposed technique shows improved Accuracy, Sensitivity and Specificity.</p>
