The original design model for defining the attenuation of manufactured cables was derived and fitted to experimental data. The model relationship connects attenuation with some parameters of cable design and testing: copper wire, aluminum, and insulation thicknesses, cable impedance, test frequency, and lay length. Defined expression was used for Monte-Carlo simulation of the cable attenuation prediction. With developed MATLAB program, a special graphical user interface was created. After assigning the desired parameters, this interface generates a plot with distribution of the attenuation values and required attenuation limit, and outputs defined mean attenuation, its 98% error, and numbers of values that get in and out of the limiting value. Data of calculations were verified by experiments and reveal good concurrence with the actual data. The realized fitting and simulation procedure, together with developed programs and created interface can be used as compact tool for designing cables with optimal parameters.

This chapter is an updated, enhanced, and expanded paper previously published in IJMMME. An attenuation-based mathematical model and computational tool for communication cable design is presented in the chapter. The relationship derived for the model creation connects attenuation with the following parameters of cable design and testing: copper wire, aluminum and insulation thicknesses, cable impedance, test frequency, and lay length. The expression found from numerous measurement data was used to simulate the Monte Carlo prediction of attenuation in the cable. To realize the simulations, a life script and regular MATLAB script programs were developed. The programs produce a special graphical user interface suitable for non-programmers, cable engineers, and technicians. Results of calculations obtained with the developed tool were verified by experiments and indicate that the tool can be used to design cables with optimal parameters.

A useful development and testing tool for Hewlett Packard paper handling and/or printer devices is presented. The system provides a microprocessor based general architecture integrated by two PCB cards and a software application, used to improve new product design and testing. Paper handling devices operation is based on DC motors, stepper motors and sensors components, so a graphical user interface was developed in order to configure, drive, and test them. The implemented tool allows a time reduction greater than 50% for the development and test of prototypes.

<p>This paper deals with the design, simulation and implementation<br />of the high-frequency transformer for a push-pull converter. It<br />also includes transformer design and simulation for two switches,<br />two outputs forward converter. Design these transformers by<br />building a program, this program is designed in MATLAB<br />software using a graphical user interface (GUI). The program is<br />aimed to reduce the efforts and reduce the time compare with the<br />manual design which takes time and effort. This paper provided<br />the shape and geometry of the core that can influence the<br />efficiency of the converter by designing these transformers in two<br />types of core. The design results were validated by simulation in<br />power simulation software (PSIM), and compare the results of<br />simulation and design.</p>

Many of today's digital cameras allow the user to review the pictures they have captured on an LCD on the back of the camera. These cameras are capable of storing numerous pictures which the user may navigate through to share ideas, concepts, or memories with others. In this paper we present two graphical user interface concepts that were designed to provide navigation aids on Kodak digital cameras. A study is described which utilized prototypes to test the concepts before they were implemented into a product. This usability study allowed the designers to select optimal parameters for these navigation aids, including recommended picture sizes and the number of pictures to be displayed within a navigation aid that is based on a film strip metaphor.

The purpose of this research is to redesign the graphical user interface of the Coca Cola Freestyle machine to improve its usability for individuals with visual impairments. The proposed design included a feature to increase text and button size. Also, the drink selection process was reordered. In this study, the original display and the redesign were implemented on a touchscreen laptop to emulate the actual process. Ten subjects with normal and impaired vision were recruited respectively and were randomly assigned to complete a drink selection task in using either the “Original” GUI or a “Redesign” created by the authors (n=5).User feedback was collected and analyzed. The drink dispensing task completion time was recorded and analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey pairwise comparison. It was concluded that the original design was easier to navigate in terms of icon position, but the redesign was preferred because of its flexibility to change the text size.

Recent ultrastructural studies on endometrial tissues from women wearing copper, wire intrauterine devices have disclosed morphological evidence of impaired glycogen degradation and secretion resulting in interference with the viability of blastocysts. Reduced microapocrine secretion observed with the scanning electron microscope supports this (1). In addition, organelle modifications have been observed in the epithelial cells of these women. The changes are seen in biopsies taken in the proliferative phase of the cycle and consist of mitochondrial vacuolation and myelin figure formation. These modifications disappear in the secretory phase and therefore have been regarded as reversible (2).The aim of the present studies was to investigate surface epithelial changes as well as organelle modifications in relation to the site of contact with an IUD that releases greater amounts of copper. Endometrial tissue was obtained from the uterine cavity of four young women wearing TCu-380-A intrauterine contraceptive devices for 4-6 weeks.

The article is devoted to the actual problem of assigning optimal parameters for connecting steel plates on cover plates with angular welds that are widely used in construction practice. The article presents the results of a comprehensive study of operation of a welded assembly of the plates connection on cover plates. An algorithm is proposed for determining the optimal parameters of a welded joint with fillet welds on the cover plates, which makes it possible to obtain a strength balanced connection. The results of full-scale tensile tests of models were presented. These results confirmed the correctness of the assumed design assumptions, and made it possible to obtain a form of destruction, not characteristic and not described in the normative literature, expressed by cutting the main elements along the length of the overlap in the joint. The possibility of such a form of destruction was confirmed by the results of numerical research in a nonlinear formulation. The optimal parameters of the nodal welded joint determined by engineering calculation are confirmed by experimental studies, as well as by the results of numerical experiments on models of calculation schemes, taking into account the physical nonlinearity of the material operation. The obtained dependence for determining the bearing capacity of the joint by the cut-off mechanism and the expression for limiting the overlap length of the cover plates will make it possible to predict the nature of the fracture and design equally strong joints.
