A numerical simulation of temperature distribution in laser welding of 304L austenitic stainless steel have been investigated in the present research work. A three-dimensional Gaussian conical moving heat source has been implemented in the present numerical simulation using ANSYS software package. Temperature-dependent thermal physical properties of 304L austenitic stainless steel have been considered, which affects the temperature profile in the weldment. The effect of laser welding process parameters, namely, average beam power, welding speed, and laser spot diameter on weld bead geometry have been studied. The temperature distribution obtained from the numerical results at different positions away from the weld line were found to be in good agreement with the experimental results. The shape of the weld pool profile obtained through numerical simulation are in good agreement with the experimental results. Mechanical properties of the welded joint have also been studied. The ultimate tensile strength of the laser welded sample was equal to the base metal 304L austenitic stainless steel.

Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) is one of the most widely used welding process in industry. The input parameters play a very significant role in determining the quality of a welded joint (geometry of weld bead). The joint quality can be evaluated by studying the features of weld bead geometry (output parameters) such as Bead Width (BW), Bead Height (BH) and Depth of Penetration (DP). Present study focused on welding of austenitic stainless steel sheets using GTAW process with 316L material. The output variables are determined according to gas flow rate, travel speed and current. Grey relational analysis is applied to optimize the input parameters simultaneously considering the multiple output variables. Finally, confirmation experiment has been conducted to validate the optimized parameters and found to be correlated.

A series of numerical simulations utilizing LS-DYNA was performed to determine the mid-point deformations of V-shaped plates due to blast loading. The numerical simulation results were then compared with experimental results from published literature. The V-shaped plate is made of DOMEX 700 and is used underneath an armour personal carrier vehicle as an anti-tank mine to mitigate the effects of explosion from landmines in a battlefield. The performed numerical simulations of blast loading of V-shaped plates consisted of various angles i.e. 60°, 90°, 120°, 150° and 180°; variable mass of explosives located at the central mid-point of the V-shaped vertex with various stand-off distances. It could be seen that the numerical simulations produced good agreement with the experimental results where the average difference was about 26.6%.
