Through the pull-out tests of the following three pavement sealing techniques: rubber asphalt, SBS modified asphalt and SBR modified emulsified asphalt, a contrast was made to analyze the influence of temperature on the pull-out strength and the displacement value of damaged sealing coats, so as to analyze the temperature sensitivity of the three sealing coats of synchronous pavements. The results show that: the rubber asphalt sealing coat, modified by the rubber power, has good temperature sensitivity and the temperature susceptibility of asphalt has been improved, with a greater ductility in low temperature and a better resistance to flow deformation in high temperature.

A kind of SBS modified emulsified asphalt for highly cold area was studied by experiments. The research includes two aspects: the first is preparation of SBS modified asphalt. The influence of temperature, time, shear rate and development time on asphalt modification are determined, so as to determine the process of SBS modified asphalt. On this basis, the blending ratio of SBS modified emulsified asphalt was determined by experiments. The results show that the emulsified asphalt produced by the equipment is of good quality and good ductility.4%SBS latex content can make emulsified asphalt meet the standard requirements, but only 6%SBS latex content can obtain better road performance. Although the softening point of SBS modified emulsified asphalt prepared by this method is still low, it can meet the requirements of high cold area.

The softening point of modified asphalt is an extremely important indicator to evaluate the high-temperature performance; its the temperature of modified asphalt sample emerging shear deformation under the action of certain shear stress according to the specific heating rate. Its found that in the actual construction and testing, different temperature conditions has a larger impact on the softening point of the modified asphalt, which has adverse affect on road construction. This paper studied and researched the influence of temperature on modified asphalt softening point indicators from the different test temperature, including packing compact temperature, scraper temperature in removal of asphalt that above test mode, standing temperature, curing temperature and initial heating temperature before test.

In order to achieve the penetration method which could reflect the high temperature property of SBS modified asphalt, the paper presented the penetration test of SBS modified asphalt with different types and dosages of SBS modifier at three kinds of penetration weight and four different temperatures. Meanwhile, the high temperature performance of the SBS modified asphalt mixture was studied. It was found that penetration measured under current specification method (25oC, 100g, 5s) could not identify the difference of viscosity and high temperature property of different SBS modified asphalt. When the test conditions are revised to “penetration weight of 150 g, test temperature of 30oC, penetration time of 5s”, the penetration of different SBS modified asphalt measured by revised method could be used to evaluate the temperature susceptibility of SBS modified asphalt accurately and are closely related to the dynamic stability of mixture.

In order to evaluate the impact of Sasobit on asphalt, the 2%,3%,4% and 5% Sasobit by mass of asphalt are blended into two types of base asphalts (Pen 60/80 and SBS modified asphalt). The mixed asphalt will be called as Sasobit modified asphalt in this study. The 15°C, 25°Cand 30°Cpenetration, the softening point, the 60°C and 135°Cviscosity, the 5°Cductility of Sasobit modified asphalt are tested. The temperature susceptibility of Sasobit modified asphalt is evaluated by using PI, VTS, PVN25-135 and PIR&B. The linear relationships between PI and PIR&B or VTS and PVN25-135 are confirmed. As the addition of Sasobit can differently change the viscosity or rheology of Sasobit modified asphalt under different temperature, it has been shown that the temperature susceptibility of Sasobit modified asphalt become better within the normal temperature range (0°C~50°C) but become higher within the high temperature range (60°C~135°C) as the additive content increases. It has been proved that Sasobit have a different impact of asphalt’s temperature susceptibility at different temperature range. So it is not appropriate to express the temperature susceptibility of Sasobit modified asphalt using a conventional index PI. This study suggests that PI and PVN can be used as indicators of the temperature susceptibility of Sasobit modified asphalt within the normal temperature range and high temperature range respectively.

The weak connection performances between the waterproof adhesive layer, the bridge deck, and asphalt pavement are important factors that cause the bridge deck slippage and upheaval and affect the safety and durability of the bridge. In this paper, styrene-butadiene-styrene- (SBS-) modified asphalt, SBS-emulsified asphalt, rubber-modified asphalt, and AMP-100 waterproof materials are selected to study the performance of the bridge deck waterproof adhesive layer in the seasonal frozen region. The shear strength and bond strength of the four waterproof adhesive materials were obtained through the shear test and pull-out test of the composite specimens composed of four kinds of adhesive materials, diatomite rubber-particle asphalt mixture, and concrete bridge deck at different dosages and temperatures. According to the priority analysis of the factors including cost, construction difficulty, and environmental protection for the four kinds of materials by using analytic hierarchy process (AHP), SBS-modified asphalt is obtained as the most suitable waterproof adhesive layer of diatomite rubber particle asphalt mixture bridge deck in seasonal frozen region.

The bonding strength between the overlays of an airport asphalt pavement directly affects its service life. In this study, a finite element model of asphalt overlay on airport pavement of Juba Airport in South Sudan was established, and the elastic modulus of overlay, thickness of overlay, running state of aircraft, variation trend of interlayer shear stress under the action of load and temperature were obtained. The AHP-entropy method was used to calculate the combined weight of each influencing factor. The climate in hot and humid areas was further zoned, and a comprehensive classification of airport asphalt pavement overlay between hot and humid tropics was obtained. Four interlayer treatment measures (asphalt precoating, two oils and one aggregate, geotextile, and geogrid) and three interlayer materials (SBS-modified asphalt, ordinary hot asphalt, and SBS-modified emulsified asphalt) were designed and tested. Through shear test, wheel-load fatigue test, and pressurized seepage test, the variation trends of interlayer shear, crack resistance, and waterproofing under different combination schemes were obtained. Finally, the matching relationship between different working conditions and interlayer treatment measures was established. The results show that the actual working conditions of an airport asphalt pavement can be divided into three levels. Combined with the performance ranking of different materials and interlayer treatment measures, the recommended interlayer treatment measures for comprehensive classifications I, II, and III are two oils and one material + SBS-modified asphalt, asphalt precoating, or geogrid + SBS-modified emulsified asphalt or ordinary hot asphalt, and geotextile + ordinary hot asphalt, respectively. The working conditions in Juba Airport in South Sudan can be classified as comprehensive classification II, the recommended treatment measures for geogrid + ordinary hot asphalt.

The influence of pH of emulsified asphalt, the kinds and content of emulsifiers and stabilizers on asphalt-aggregate adhesion have been investigated in this paper. Results show that the pH of the emulsified asphalt has great impact on asphalt-aggregate adhesion by way of the effect of pH on asphalt, asphalt-aggregate adhesion is worst when asphalt emulsion at pH≈4, which is close to the isoelectric point of asphalt, the bigger the zeta potential absolute value of emulsified asphalt, the better the asphalt-aggregate adhesion property. Effect of emulsifiers on asphalt-aggregate adhesion is complex, the best dosage is at 0.2%. The addition of organic stabilizers are superior to inorganic stabilizers to improve the asphalt-aggregate adhesion, the best dosage is at 0.4%. Effect of mixing emulsifier and stabilizer is better than single-doped emulsifier and stabilizer.
