User-Defined Governor Model Based on PSCAD and Analysis of Low Frequency Oscillation Mechanism

Based on PSCAD software, a user-defined governor model is set up. Single machine infinite bus system and four machine two regional system are taken as examples based on PSCAD and the elements’ parameters are set on the test results of a power plant in southern China. By analyzing the model of speed governing system and changing governor parameters’ value, mechanistic study leading to low frequency oscillation is studied in the paper.

The mechanism of power system low frequency oscillation was discussed in this paper. The coupling model between turbine governor system of plant and power system was established in MATLAB. The possibility of power system low frequency oscillation induced by unit-grid coupling was researched in detail. The simulation results indicate that power system low frequency oscillation will occur under disturbance, if a high derivative gain is used in PID controllers of hydraulic turbine governing system and partial derivative of turbine power output with respect to head varies with load. As for steam turbine, the PID parameters of governor system have important effect on small-signal stability of power system when the damp of power system is not very strong. The power oscillations caused by disturbance is decreased with the use of PID controller in governing system, whereas power oscillation is increased with the use of PI controller.

With the continuous spreading of scale in power system and introducing of fast excitation system, the problem of low frequency oscillation which is arosed because of lacking-damping becomes worse and worse. This paper analyzes the mechanism reasons of insufficient-damping, using an auxiliary control unitpower system stabilizer (PSS) to increase the damping torque. Through established a simulation model of excitation control system on a typical single machine-infinite bus system, simulates the synchronous generators transient operating characteristics under large and small disturbances, and the simulation results show that the design can improve the system damping and the generator operating characteristics, increase power system dynamic stability.

Coherency is used to characterize the degree of confusion between generators which oscillate against each other, so it can judge the process which generators oscillate from local mode to inter-area mode. The coherency is the value of the direction cosine by using angle of the generators. when the direction cosines of two generator is 1 that indicates the oscillation direction between the two generators is inter-area oscillation mode; when the direction cosines of two generator is-1 that indicates the oscillation direction between the two generators is local oscillation mode. Coherency is affected by speed governing system and excitation system of generator.Using two area systems verifies the theoretical analysis is correct.
