Focus on the increasingly prominent problems of power quality of dedicated users, study on solving electric energy problems, especially for harmonic pollution, was essential. This paper to study the method of testing and calculating electric energy index, then designed hardware to monitor and analyze power quality measurement data. The hardware was developed base on dual DSP2812, which was very advanced digital signal processing chip, and the hardware utilized high precision instantaneous synchronous sampling chip MAX1324, extended RAM and FLASH, RS232 communication circuit, high capacity SD card storage circuit, etc. The dual DSP power quality smart meter was tested and applied in dedicated users and its reliability, practicability, availability and accuracy was authenticated. This smart meter also has advantages of easy to carry, low cost, high precision, easy to promote, etc. can effectively meet power quality management of dedicated users.

Power quality and energy consumption measurements support providers and energy users with solutions for acquiring and reporting information about the energy supply for residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. In particular, since the average number of electronic devices in homes increases year by year and their sensitivity is very high, it is not only important to monitor the total energy consumption, but also the quality of the power supplied. However, in practice, end-users do not have information about the energy consumption in real-time nor about the quality of the power they receive, because electric energy meters are too expensive and complex to be handled. In order to overcome these inconveniences, an innovative, open source, low-cost, precise, and reliable power and electric energy meter is presented that can be easily installed and managed by any inexperienced user at their own home in urban or rural areas. The system was validated in a real house over a period of two weeks, showing interesting results and findings which validate our proposal.

In order to solve the problem that special users energy saving potential is unable to diagnose automotive online, a new automatic diagnosis of energy saving potential method based on online DSP was proposed. This proposed method, together with a variety of techniques like modern power electronics, digital signal processing, high precision and fast sampling, high capacity storage, human-machine interaction technologies and so on, was applied to develop a corresponding special users energy saving potential diagnosis detector. The hardware design and DSP energy saving analysis software design of the detector were described firstly, and the results of field test were presented to demonstrate its feasibility. It is shown that, its advantages include easy-to-use, low cost, highly reliable, strong intelligence and easy to promote, thus can effectively improve the efficiency of electrical energy audit and the degree of information and automation.

Environmental awareness, current trends in the power market, the quest for energy efficiency, and the progressive transformation of electricity consumers to prosumers are the primary drives for the gradual shift from the old power grids into the smart grids. The deployment of renewable dispersed generation systems and energy storage units uncovered the need for smart metering to oversee and control those generation systems. This chapter presents the design and development of a robust, efficient, multi-functional, and low-cost smart meter. The proposed metering system has added features that enabled the utilities to recover the meter energy measurement data remotely. The system allows monitoring and transmission of energy consumed in real-time. It considers using a microcontroller board as the controlling unit to execute control and monitor activities. A liquid crystal display displays standard electrical measurements such as current, voltage, power, and energy consumption. The external communication device is required in the unit’s actualization, in conjunction with the control unit based on the existing mobile technology. It stands as the intermediary between the nearby available utility station and consumers or end-users. In conclusion, liquid crystal display displays real-time based data for the end-user to visualize. The usage data billing is done within thirty seconds, stored, and trans-received the process for data collection, keeping, and billing generation.
