In this work, we demonstrate the functionalization of zinc oxide nanowires with carboxylic acid moieties and investigate their potential application as p-nitrophenol sensors. First, synthesis of high quality zinc oxide nanowires along with appropriate characterization results is discussed. Subsequently, oleic acid, as a model system, is used to examine functionalization behavior of nanowire surface. Vibrational spectroscopic techniques are employed to determine nature of bonding and orientation of oleic acid molecule at nanowire surface. Photoluminescence properties of modified- and unmodified ZnO nanowires with oleic acid were investigated. Based on these results, an appropriate receptor capable of sensitive optical detection of p-nitrophenol is proposed. In addition, results on sensing mechanism of the receptor based on fluorescence quenching are reported, which highlight the capability of selective and sensitive detection of p-nitrophenol analyte using the receptor.

Ferroelectric Li-doped ZnO nanowires have been examined as photoanodes for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting and systematically investigated poling effects. Positively polarized PEC electrodes demonstrated ~200% improved STH efficiency compared with negatively polarized ones.

ZnO nanowires loaded with Pt, Ag and CuO nanoparticles were synthesized on a flexible mesh for environmental clean-up applications. The heterostructured nanowires mesh is robust with stable photoresponse under bending. The mesh shows photocatalytic degradation and oil–water separation capabilities.

This study is mainly to control the density of zinc oxide nanowires arrays as main axis. We spin coated AZO thin film to Si/SiO2substrate by hydrothermal method growing ZnO nanowire arrays on a substrate by spin coating a layer of zinc powder mixed with SiO2film, and controlled the concentration of zinc. We can easily obtain a nanowire array density control. In this experiment, we investigated different centrifugation speed, time, zinc concentration, temperature and other variable parameters. Through field emission scanning electron microscopy observation of dispersive zinc oxide nanowires and dispersion situation, it was found that using different doping concentration and rotation speed, different densities can be successfully obtained for ZnO nanowires array. Dispersion of zinc oxide nanowires by hydrothermal method with increasing time, the diameter and length will increase significantly.
