Application of Experimental Modal Analysis Method in Researching of Mechanical Structure Dynamic Characteristics

With the purpose of realizing the analysis of mechanical structure dynamic characteristics and inhibit vibration and noise, combined with the analysis of a certain type of high speed sewing machines vibration characteristics, we carry on the concrete experimental modal analysis, and compare the results of the experimental modal analysis with the results of spectrum analysis. The analysis results show that the second order natural frequency of the shell is close to two octaves under the normal working speed of sewing machine and it will lead to resonance. Enhancing the structural rigidity and the natural frequency under this modal to avoid resonance frequency is the key to improve vibration resistance of the structure.

According to the principle of the experimental modal analysis, this study is based on tool system of the MIKRON UCP 710 numerical control machining center as test object for experimental modal analysis. Using the integral polynomial recognition method to identify the modal parameters (natural frequency, structural damping, and modal shape), and finally matching the results with the vector analysis method and the finite element simulation method. The results show that integral polynomial recognition method has higher precision than the vector analysis method to identify the multi-degree of freedom system; the experimental modal analysis can also obtain better modal parameters of the structure system, and a higher precision than the finite element simulation method. Obtained the MIKRON UCP 710 high-speed milling center tool system accurate modal parameters provides the necessary theoretical and experimental basis for the further study of the stability properties in the cutting processing of the high speed machining tool system.

The quality of machining is dependent on the machine’s dynamic behavior throughout the operating process. Because of the loads or vibration during operation, the rigidity of the machine structure can be reduced. Therefore, the study of advances in the dynamic characteristics has great significance for the development of machine tools, especially for high-speed machines. This paper presents the design and analysis of a rigid gantry structure with a spindle speed in the range of (6.000 ÷ 24.000)rpm, corresponding to the natural frequency of the machine structure more than (100 ÷ 400)Hz. Use CAE (computer-aided engineering) analysis software to analyze the natural frequency of machine structure. The research results show that the machine structure will have good stiffness, high vibration resistance and avoid resonance to achieve the best machining surface. In addition, it is the basis for selection of cutting mode suitable for the machining process in order to improve the reliability and efficiency of work of the machine structure and the accuracy of the processed products.

Experimental modal analysis is a relatively young part of dynamics, which deals with the vibration modes identification of machines or their parts. Its development has started since the beginning of the eighties, when the computers hardware equipment has improved and the fast Fourier transform (FFT) could be used for the results determination. Nowadays it provides an uncountable set of vibration analysis possibilities starting with conventional contact transducers of acceleration and ending with modern noncontact optical methods. In this contribution we mention the use of high-speed digital image correlation by experimental determination of mode shapes and modal frequencies. The aim of our work is to create a program application called Modan 3D enabling the performing of experimental modal analysis and operational modal analysis. In this paper the experimental modal analysis of a thin steel sample performed with Q-450 Dantec Dynamics is described. In Modan 3D the experiment data were processed and the vibration modes were determined. The reached results were verified by PULSE modulus specialized for mechanical vibration analysis.


This article presents a critical review of recent research done on crack identification and localization in structural beams using numerical and experimental modal analysis. Crack identification and localization in beams are very crucial in various engineering applications such as ship propeller shafts, aircraft wings, gantry cranes, and Turbo machinery blades. It is necessary to identify the damage in time; otherwise, there may be serious consequences like a catastrophic failure of the engineering structures. Experimental modal analysis is used to study the vibration characteristics of structures like natural frequency, damping and mode shapes. The modal parameters like natural frequency and mode shapes of undamaged and damaged beams are different. Based on this reason, structural damage can be detected, especially in beams. From the review of various research papers, it is identified that a lot of the research done on beams with open transverse crack. Crack location is identified by tracking variation in natural frequencies of a healthy and cracked beam

The finite element model of worktable system is created and modal analysis is made with ANSYS Workbench by taking DVG850 high-speed vertical machining center worktable system for example. We make modal analysis of single-screw strength general reinforcement worktable system and get the natural frequency and the vibration mode.Then in order to improve the system's natural frequency, the scheme of dual-screw worktable system is put forward. Also natural frequency and vibration mode is got. Finally, it is proved that the performance of dual-screw worktable system is significantly better than the single-screw one. This provides a reliable reference for further study on dynamic analysis of worktable system.

It is significant to study the dynamic characteristics of the mechanical system. In order to prevent accidents such as resonance and self-excited shock, modal analysis of the mechanical systems should be analyzed. The mode shape of gears was analyzed to improving the design security. The sleeve, the planet gears and the internal gear of the motor were simulated. All order natural frequency, the mode shape of the motor was obtained. Research shows that motor running is smooth when the frequency is less than 4230Hz.

This paper adopts composite structure system analysis method to perform modal analysis of high-speed face milling cutter which is mounted on the machine tool through FEM modal analysis. The key problem of this method is to obtain joint surface parameters between the machine tool spindle and face milling cutter through experimental modal analysis and MATLAB software. The joint surface parameters consist of linear stiffness, linear damping, rotation stiffness and rotation damping. After getting the frequency response function (FRF) at the tool tip of the face milling system through experimental modal analysis, the contact surface parameters can be used to eliminate the influence of the machine tool to get modal parameters of the face-milling cutter itself. Based on the finite element model of face milling cutter, composite structure system analysis method can be used easily to acquire the dynamic performance of the face milling system through FEM modal analysis, greatly to improve the reliability of modal analysis, and is helpful to the dynamic design and the structure improvement of high speed face milling cutter.

The quality of high speed machining is directly related to dynamic characteristics of spindle-toolholder interface. The paper established normal and tangential interactions of BT spindle-toolholder interface based on finite element contact theory, and analysed free modal in Abaqus/Standard. Then the result was compared with the experimental modal analysis. It shows that the finite element model is effective and could be applied in the future dynamic study of high-speed spindle system.

In this paper, the dynamic behavior of a cantilever beam without and with crack is observed. An elastic Aluminum cantilever beams having surface crack at various crack positions are considered to analyze dynamically. Crack depth, crack length and crack location are the foremost parameters for describing the health condition of beam in terms of modal parameters such as natural frequency, mode shape and damping ratio. It is crucial to study the influence of crack depth and crack location on modal parameters of the beam for the decent performance and its safety. Crack or damage of structure causes a reduction in stiffness, an intrinsic reduction in resonant frequencies, variation of damping ratios and mode shapes. The broad examination of cantilever beam without crack and with crack has been done using Numerical analysis (Ansys18.0) and experimental modal analysis. To observe the exact higher modes of beam, discretize the beam into small elements. An experimental set up was established for cantilever beam having crack and it was excited by an impact hammer and finally the response was obtained using PCB accelerometer with the help sound and vibration toolkit of NI Lab-view. After obtaining the Frequency response functions (FRFs), the natural frequencies of beam are estimated using peak search method. The effectiveness of experimental modal analysis in terms of natural frequency is validated with numerical analysis results. This paper contains the study of free vibration analysis under the influence of crack at different points along the length of the beam.
