UPFC is considered as an important modern device in the flexible ac transmission systems family that provides the controllability and flexibility for transmission lines. It is also capable of enhancing the stability of the power system by the addition of a supplementary damping controller, which can be installed on any control channel of the UPFC inputs to implement the task of power oscillation damping controller. This paper presents the application of UPFC to enhance damping of low frequency oscillations by the simultaneous coordinated design between power system stabilizer and different UPFC supplementary damping controller in order to identify the design that provided the most robust damping performance in a single machine infinite bus. The parameters of the damping controller were tuned in the individual and coordinated design by using a chaotic particle swarm optimization algorithm that optimized the given eigenvalue-based objective function. The results analysis reveals that the proposed coordinated designs have high ability in damping Low-frequency oscillations and improve the system damping over their individual control responses. In addition, the coordinated design PSS & δE provides superior performance in comparison to the all coordinated designs.

This paper compares the performance of UPFC damping controller (, and ) to damp Low Frequency Oscillations (LFO) in power system equipped with UPFC based on Fuzzy Logic Power System Stabilizer (UPFC based FLPSS). The power system model was developed using linearized model of Phillips-Heffron Single Machine Infinite Bus (SMIB) and simulated in Matlab Simulink. The ability of each controller to damp LFO present in the rotor speed was monitored when the system being perturbed by small disturbances. The results obtained shown that UPFC controller had better performance to damp LFO compared to the other UPFC damping controllers as it had the lowest overshoot and less settling time.

Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) device is applied to control power flow in transmission lines. Supplementary damping controller can be installed on any control channel of the UPFC inputs to implement the task of Power Oscillation Damping (POD) controller. In this paper, we have presented the simultaneous coordinated design of the multiple damping controllers between Power System Stabilizer (PSS) and UPFC-based POD or between different multiple UPFC-based POD controllers without PSS in a single-machine infinite-bus power system in order to identify the design that provided the most effective damping performance. The parameters of the damping controllers are optimized utilizing a Chaotic Particle Swarm Optimization (CPSO) algorithm based on eigenvalue objective function. The simulation results show that the coordinated design of the multiple damping controllers has high ability in damping oscillations compared to the individual damping controllers. Furthermore, the coordinated design of UPFC-based POD controllers demonstrates the superiority over the coordinated design of PSS and UPFC-based POD controllers for enhancing greatly the stability of the power system.

Low frequency oscillation has been a major threat in large interconnected power system. These low frequency oscillations curtain the power transfer capability of the line. Power system stabilizer (PSS) helps in diminishing these low frequency oscillations by providing auxiliary control signal to the generator excitation input, thereby restoring stability of the system. In this chapter, the authors have incorporated the concept of oppositional based learning (OBL) along with differential search algorithm (DSA) to solve PSS problem. The proposed technique has been implemented on both single input and dual input PSS, and comparative study has been done to show the supremacy of the proposed techniques. The convergence characteristics as well authenticate the sovereignty of the considered algorithms.

PSSs are added to excitation systems to enhance the damping during low frequency oscillations. The non-linear model of a machine is linearized at different operating points. Chemical Reaction optimization (CRO), a new population based search algorithm is been proposed in this paper to damp the power system low-frequency oscillations and enhance power system stability. Computation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is effective in damping low frequency oscillations as well as improving system dynamic stability. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated for different loading conditions. In addition, the proposed algorithm is more effective and provides superior performance when compared other population based optimization algorithms like differential evolution (DE) and particle swarm optimization (PSO).

To damp the low-frequency oscillations which occurred due to the disturbances in the electrical power system, the generators are equipped with Power System Stabilizer (PSS) that provide supplementary feedback stabilizing signals. The low-frequency oscillations in power system are classified as local mode oscillations, intra-area mode oscillation, and interarea mode oscillations. Double input multiband Power system stabilizers (PSSs) were used to damp out low-frequency oscillations in power system. Among dual-input PSSs, PSS4B offers superior transient performance. Power system simulator for engineering (PSS/E) software was adopted to test and evaluate the dynamic performance of PSS4B model on Iraqi national grid. The results showed that after installing the PSS in a specific plant the oscillation of rotor angle, bus frequency, speed, power flow is better than without PSS during the disturbances that occurred during the simulations.  All the PSS/E simulation and tests were done in the National dispatch center (NDC) laboratory, Ministry of Electricity.
