A direct-current potential-drop NDE technique has been developed for the evaluation of a 3-D back-wall crack in thick-walled structures. The measuring system contains two pairs of probes – one for current supply and the other for the measurement of potential-drop, where the currentsupply and measuring probes are in close proximity to each other. The optimum arrangement of the four-point-probes system is determined from the finite-element simulation of the three-dimensional electric crack problem. The predicted potential-drop across the crack has been verified experimentally using the newly developed measuring sensor. Measured results of semi-elliptical cracks in stainless steel plates establish the practicality as well as reliability of the present potentialdrop method of testing for the evaluation of 3-D back-wall cracks in thick-walled structures.

Recently, in the loading tests for steel members, the deformation value is measured by calculating a distance of both cross-heads. This measuring method encounters a test error due to various environmental factors, such as initial slip, etc.. Especially, in the case of welded members, the non-uniform deformation behavior in welded joints is observed because of the effect of welding residual stress and weld metal. This is mainly responsible for a test error and a loss of the reliability for used test instruments. Therefore, to improve the accuracy and the applicability of measuring system, it is necessary to employ a visual monitoring system which can accurately measure the local and overall deformation of welded members. In this paper, to accurately measure a deformation of welded members, a visual monitoring system (VMS) was developed by using three-dimensional digital photogrammetry. The VMS was applied to the loading tests of a welded member. The accuracy and the applicability of VMS was verified by comparing to the deformation value measured by a test instrument (MTS-810). The characteristics of the behavior near a welded joint were investigated by using VMS.

During manufacturing the welded joint of steel structures, residual stress is produced and weld metal is used inevitably. And residual stress and weld metal influence on the static and dynamic mechanical behavior of steel structures. Therefore, to predict the mechanical behavior of steel pile with a welded joint during static and dynamic deformation, the research on the influence of the welded joints on the static and dynamic behavior of steel pile is clarified. In this paper, the residual stress distribution in a welded joint of steel piles was investigated by using three-dimensional welding analysis. The static and dynamic mechanical behavior of steel piles with a welded joint is investigated by three-dimensional elastic-plastic finite element analysis using a proposed dynamic hysteresis model. Numerical analyses of the steel pile with a welded joint were compared to that without a welded joint with respect to load carrying capacity and residual stress distribution. The influence of the welded joint on the mechanical behavior of steel piles during static and dynamic deformation was clarified by comparing analytical results

AbstractArc brazing with low-melting copper-based filler materials, which has long been established and standardized in the thin sheet sector, offers numerous advantages in the processing of predominantly electrolytically galvanized steel structures. In steel and shipbuilding, on the other hand, equipment parts made of thick steel sheets are hot-dip galvanized at low cost and with good corrosion-inhibiting properties. Quality welding of such constructions is not possible without special precautions such as removing the zinc layer and subsequent recoating. With regard to greater plate thicknesses, arc brazing was analyzed in these investigations as an alternative joining method with regard to its suitability for practical use. Within the scope of the investigations, CuSi3Mn, CuMn12Ni2, and four different aluminum bronzes were examined on different sheet surface conditions with regard to the geometrical and production parameters. This was carried out by build-up and connection brazing, executed as butt and cross joints. Quasi-static tensile tests and fatigue tests were used to assess the strength behavior. In addition, metallographic analyses are carried out as well as hardness tests. The suitability for multi-layer brazing and the tendency to distortion were also investigated, as well as the behavior of arc brazed joints under corrosive conditions.

There is a definite need in the engineering industry for an instrument which will determine accurately the thickness of a metal wall from one side only, and which is portable, robust, independent of external power supply, and easy to operate. The instrument described in the paper fulfils all these conditions. The method is essentially that of comparing the resistance of a metal wall under test with that of a similarly shaped wall of the same material, of which the thickness is known. Current, usually under 10 amp., is supplied by a 6- or 12-volt battery to two current contacts held against the wall and usually spaced 2 or 3 inches apart. The current in the circuit is adjusted by varying the rheostat or the number of cells of the small car-battery employed, until the very small potential drop indicated by the deflexion of a galvanometer connected to two potential contacts reaches a predetermined fixed value. From a calibration curve the thickness of the wall corresponding to the current registered by the ammeter is determined. The contacts are made on the plates whose thickness is to be measured by means of Evershed and Vignoles spring-controlled rotating points that were originally designed for a four-point method of working. The flexible leads from these, sometimes 100 but usually 30 feet long, are rubber-covered, and are connected to the circuit in the box by plugs and sockets. These are removed for transport and carried in a separate box. The instrument was originally designed for measuring the thickness of boiler tubes, and examples are given showing that its accuracy in this respect is within a few thousandths of an inch. It was found in practice that the instrument could be used to measure the thickness of mild steel plates up to 1·25 inches and of iron castings, up to 3 inches, with the same order of accuracy. It is also used for the measurement of engine cylinder walls to detect core shift. Examples of these are given in the paper. One notable case was that of the examination of a bank of superheater tubes in a boiler that had given much trouble due to the use of an unsuitable chain-grate stoker. Thinned tubes were at once detected and on being cut out the thicknesses indicated by the instrument were confirmed. Examples are given of the regular use of the instrument in determining the thickness of boiler and superheater tubes, ships' hull plates, tank wagons, and various iron castings that were accessible from one side only.

Computer simulation of vehicle collisions has improved significantly over the past decade. With advances in computer technology, nonlinear finite element codes, and material models, full-scale simulation of such complex dynamic interactions is becoming ever more possible. In this study, an explicit three-dimensional nonlinear finite element code, LS-DYNA, is used to demonstrate the capabilities of computer simulations to supplement full-scale crash testing. After a failed crash test on a strong-post guardrail system, LS-DYNA is used to simulate the system, determine the potential problems with the design, and develop an improved system that has the potential to satisfy current crash test requirements. After accurately simulating the response behavior of the full-scale crash test, a second simulation study is performed on the system with improved details. Simulation results indicate that the system performs much better compared to the original design.
