Effect of Surface Modification on Properties of Natural Hydroxyapatite/Polypropylene Composites

Cattle bone-based hydroxyapatite (HA) powders were prepared. Three types of silane coupling agents, i.e. γ-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APES), methyl trimethoxysilane (MTMS), and γ-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane (GPMS) were used to modify the HA surface. Untreated HA powders and silane-treated HA powders were utilized to produce HA/polypropylene (PP) composites containing a 60% (w/w) of HA content. Effect of filler surface modification on properties of HA/PP composites were investigated. The results suggested that treating HA surface with a silane coupling agent enhances interaction at HA-PP interface. Among the silane coupling agents used in this study, APES is, on average, the most effective agent for enhancing stiffness of HA/PP composites.

A uniform, monodispersed superfine cuprous oxide (Cu2O) sphere with a mean diameter of 850 nm has been synthesized by solution reduction. The study reported the synthesis and thermal properties of Cu2O/PP composites for the first time. The surface modification of the superfine Cu2O sphere was carried out by using a silane coupling agent KH-570. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) curve revealed that the Cu2O had been successfully modified by silane coupling agent KH570. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) shows that the modified Cu2O can be uniformly dispersed in the polypropylene (PP) matrix, because through surface modification, there are some active functional groups on its surface, such as the ester group, which improves its compatibility with the PP matrix. The thermal stability of Cu2O/PP composites was improved by adding a small amount of Cu2O (1 wt % of PP). Therefore, based on the potential bacteriostasis of cuprous oxide, the low cost of PP and the results of this study, it is predicted that Cu2O/PP composites can be used in infant preparation (such as milk bottles) with low cost and good thermal stability in the near future.

In this paper nanoSiO2 particles were prepared with the surface grafted fluorine coupling agents and double bond by using surface modification technology. Dispersion effect of nanoSiO2 particles were studied in different solvents ultrasound cavitation. Test results showed in infrared spectroscopy, TEM and laser particle size distribution analyzer that both F8261 and KH-570 have been grafted onto the surface of nanoSiO2 , particle size and distribution of nanoSiO2 after modified by the two coupling agent became smaller and more narrow; Tg-DSC analysis showed that when the amount of of the coupling agent is up to 10%, fluorine coupling agent and double bond grafted onto surface of nanoSiO2 particles reach the saturation.
