The effect of sterilization on the structural integrity of the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix composite reinforced with carbon fibers (CF) is investigated by nanoindentation test. We present the investigation of the influence of sterilization processes on fiber/matrix interphase properties. The effect of multiple widely-used steam sterilization processes on fibers/matrix interphase region properties was studied by modulus mapping test.

The aim of the present study is the development of new composite materials that show improved mechanical and structural integrity. In order to accomplish this goal, a novel functionalization method of the carbon fibers for the reinforcement of the composites surface was investigated. Through the electrografting of methacrylic acid onto the surface of the carbon fiber, this treatment aims to selectively modify the surface of the carbon fabrics, in order to create active groups that can chemically react with the epoxy resin, under heat and pressure. By this way, better adhesion as mechanical interlocking between the resin and the reinforcement can be achieved. The surface treatment was examined qualitatively by means of Infrared spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The carbon fiber reinforced polymers were manufactured via the hot-press technique and they were subsequently submitted to flexural, shear and nanoindentation test. Finally, the internal structural integrity was tested through micro-Computing Tomography.

Mullite interlayer of the carbon fiber reinforced Si-C-N matrix composite (C/Si-C-N) was fabricated by liquid precursor impregnation and pyrolysis (PIP). The mixture of aluminium secbutoxide (A1OBu) and tetraethoxysilicate (TEOS) were used as starting materials. The monophase polymer gel used as mullite precursor could be formed from the mixture in the semi-closed air. A mullite interlayer with a thickness about 500nm is obtained at 850°C- 1200°C. The fiber/interlayer bonds are tight. The carbon fibers are not damaged in the fabrication procedure.

In this study we present the investigation of the influence of multiple sterilization processes on micromechanical properties carried out on a composite based on carbon fibers (CF) and polymer matrix composite polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The effect of widely-used steam sterilization process on fibers/matrix interphase region properties was studied by nanoindentation.
