In the present paper, a Transformer Design Optimization (TDO) software package is developed providing a user-friendly transformer design and visualization environment. This software consists of a collection of design optimization, visualization and verification tools, able to provide transformer designers all the proper interactive capabilities required for the enhancement of the automated design process of a manufacturing industry.

Since large power transformers are custom-made, and their design process is a labor-intensive task, their design process is split into different parts. In tendering, the price calculation is based on the preliminary design of the transformer. Due to the complexity of this task, it belongs to the most general branch of discrete, non-linear mathematical optimization problems. Most of the published algorithms are using a copper filling factor based winding model to calculate the main dimensions of the transformer during this first, preliminary design step. Therefore, these cost optimization methods are not considering the detailed winding layout and the conductor dimensions. However, the knowledge of the exact conductor dimensions is essential to calculate the thermal behaviour of the windings and make a more accurate stray loss calculation. The paper presents a novel, evolutionary algorithm-based transformer optimization method which can determine the optimal conductor shape for the windings during this examined preliminary design stage. The accuracy of the presented FEM method was tested on an existing transformer design. Then the results of the proposed optimization method have been compared with a validated transformer design optimization algorithm.

The design of ship is related to several disciplines such as hydrostatic, resistance, propulsion and economic. The traditional design process of ship only involves independent design optimization within each discipline. With such an approach, there is no guarantee to achieve the optimum design. And at the same time improving the efficiency of ship optimization is also crucial for modem ship design. In this paper, an introduction of both the traditional ship design process and the fundamentals of Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) theory are presented and a comparison between the two methods is carried out. As one of the most frequently applied MDO methods, Collaborative Optimization (CO) promotes autonomy of disciplines while providing a coordinating mechanism guaranteeing progress toward an optimum and maintaining interdisciplinary compatibility. However there are some difficulties in applying the conventional CO method, such as difficulties in choosing an initial point and tremendous computational requirements. For the purpose of overcoming these problems, Design Of Experiment (DOE) and a new support vector regression algorithm are applied to CO to construct statistical approximation model in this paper. The support vector regression algorithm approximates the optimization model and is updated during the optimization process to improve accuracy. It is shown by examples that the computing efficiency and robustness of this CO method are higher than with the conventional CO method. Then this new Collaborative Optimization (CO) method using approximate technology is discussed in detail and applied in ship design which considers hydrostatic, propulsion, weight and volume, performance and cost. It indicates that CO method combined with approximate technology can effectively solve complex engineering design optimization problem. Finally, some suggestions on the future improvements are proposed.

Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) missions often involve a need to complete tasks in hazardous environments. In such situations, human-robot teams (HRT) may be essential tools for future USAR missions. Transparency and explanation are two information exchange processes where transparency is real-time information exchange and explanation is not. For effective HRTs, certain levels of transparency and explanation must be met, but how can these modes of team communication be operationalized? During the COVID-19 pandemic, our approach to answering this question involved an iterative design process that factored in our research objectives as inputs and pilot studies with remote participants. Our final research testbed design resulted in converting an in-person task environment to a completely remote study and task environment. Changes to the study environment included: utilizing user-friendly video conferencing tools such as Zoom and a custom-built application for research administration tasks and improved modes of HRT communication that helped us avoid confounding our performance measures.

Abstract As engineering design is subjected to increasingly formal study, an informal attitude continues to surround the topic of iteration. Today there is no standard definition or typology of iteration, no grounding theory, few metrics, and a poor understanding of its role in the design process. Existing literature provides little guidance in investigating issues of design that might be best approached in terms of iteration. We review contributions of existing literature toward the understanding of iteration in design, develop a classification of design iteration, compare iterative aspects of human and automated design, and draw some conclusions concerning management of iteration and approaches to design automation.
