Large-diameter pipes used in offshore applications are commonly manufactured through the UOE process. The plate is crimped along its edges, formed into a U-shape and then pressed into an O-shape between two semicircular dies. The pipe is welded closed and then circumferentially expanded to obtain a highly circular shape. In this study, the two-dimensional finite element model of the whole processing of the UOE pipe production has been established, including large deformation and complex contact. The deformed geometries of different steps and distribution of the equivalent plastic strain and variation in load are analyzed. This research is helpful in UOE forming process design and evaluating the capability of the pipe mill.

Large diameter and thin thickness are the main characteristics of the steel pipe piles in offshore engineering. Before piling a pile, heavy hammer will be placed on the top of it, which may emerge a serious risk in pile buckling. A three dimensional finite element model of pile and soil was established for a case study. The modified Riks method which can automatically search a suitable increment factor of loads is adopted to assess the stability of the pile, and the geometric nonlinearity and pile-soil interaction were both considered. The practical example shows that the critical load considering pile-soil interaction is much smaller than that in a fixed constraint.

Abstract The effects of variations in stiffness and geometry on the nonuniformity of tires are investigated by using the finite element analysis. In order to evaluate tire uniformity, a three-dimensional finite element model of the tire with imperfections is developed. This paper considers how imperfections, such as variations in stiffness or geometry and run-out, contribute to detrimental effects on tire nonuniformity. It is found that the radial force variation of a tire with imperfections depends strongly on the geometrical variations of the tire.

A finite element model is proposed to investigate the effect of thickness differential on Limiting Dome Height (LDH) testing of aluminum tailor-welded blanks. The numerical model is validated via comparison of the equivalent plastic strain and displacement distribution between the simulation results and the experimental data. The normalized equivalent plastic strain and normalized LDH values are proposed as a means of quantifying the influence of thickness differential for a variety of different ratios. Increasing thickness differential was found to decrease the normalized equivalent plastic strain and normalized LDH values, this providing an evaluation of blank formability.

In more and more complicated urban building environment, a new construction method that metro engineering is constructed by large-diameter shield and shallow mining method can be regarded as a great attempt in China. By taking the Gaojiayuan station of Beijing metro line 14 as an engineering background, the main construction steps for the platform of the metro station built by a large-size shield with an outer diameter of 10 m and the Pile-Beam-Arch (PBA) method are introduced. Based on the soil-structure interaction theory, a two-dimensional finite element model is used to simulate the shield tunneling and the platform construction by the PBA method to enlarge the shield tunnel. The ground deformation and structural stress of the platform are predicted. The numerical results can be regarded as a valuable reference for the application of the new construction method in Beijing metro line 14.
