AbstractThe Nearctic species of the genus Holoteleia are revised. Two named species are redescribed and five new species are described: H. armigera from Florida; H. coriacea, H. laticeps, and H. polita from eastern Canada and the United States; and H. elegans, widespread east of the Rocky Mountains. A diagnosis of Holoteleia and a key to the Nearctic species are given. Potential impact of environmental degradation on the frequency of Holoteleia species in North America is discussed.

Herein, the cleptoparasitic (cuckoo) bee genusEpeolus(Hymenoptera: Apidae) is revised for species occurring in North America, north of Mexico, and an updated checklist of all species known to occur in Canada and the United States of America is provided with comprehensive descriptions, diagnoses, and a single dichotomous key (using the same couplets for both sexes) to aid in their identification. To increase their recognition among North American naturalists, English common names are also proposed for all North AmericanEpeolus. A total of 43 species is confirmed as present in the region, 15 of which are newly recognized. The following new species are proposed based on unique morphological (and in most cases also molecular) attributes:E.andriyisp. n.,E.attenboroughisp. n.,E.axillarissp. n.,E.basilisp. n.,E.brumleyisp. n.,E.chamaesarachaesp. n.,E.deyrupisp. n.,E.diadematussp. n.,E.ferrariisp. n.,E.gibbsisp. n.,E.inornatussp. n.,E.nebulosussp. n.,E.packerisp. n.,E.splendidussp. n., andE.tessierissp. n.Of the 15, six (E.axillaris,E.brumleyi,E.chamaesarachae,E.diadematus,E.splendidus, andE.tessieris) were identified as new species under different names (nomina nuda) in an M.Sc. thesis by Richard L. Brumley in 1965, but until now they have not been formally described. Detailed morphological comparisons with some evidence from DNA barcoding support the following synonymies, one of whichCwas first proposed by Brumley (1965): a)E.melectimimusCockerell and Sandhouse,syn.n., underE.asperatusCockerell; b)E.crucisCockerell,syn.n., underE.compactusCresson; c)E.mesillaepalmarumLinsley,syn.n., underE.mesillae(Cockerell); and d)E.weemsiMitchell,syn.n., and e)E.vernalisMitchell,syn.n., underE.ilicisMitchell. Only one member of the almost entirely Neotropical “Trophocleptria group” (EpeolusbifasciatusCresson) is confirmed as occurring north of Mexico, and is widespread East of the Rocky Mountains. Known floral associations are indicated for each species, as are suspected or known host species ofColletesLatreille. Evidence is presented that suggests further investigation into the possible synonymy ofColleteswickhamiTimberlake underC.scopiventerSwenk is warranted.

AbstractAll Cardiophorus species found in Canada and the United States of America east of the Rocky Mountains are keyed and all but those with the majority of their ranges west of the Rocky Mountains are revised. Eleven species are recognized, three of which are new to science (C. catskillensissp. nov., C. destinensissp. nov., and C. panamapolissp. nov.). Cardiophorus floridae Candèze and C. angustatus Blanchard are synonymized under C. convexus (Say). All 11 are described and taxonomically important characters are presented. Distribution maps are presented for each species. The following lectotypes are designated for species that were described from more than one specimen without former holotype designation: C. angustatus, C. floridae, C. erythropus Erichson, C. gagates Erichson, C. togatus Horn, C. robustus LeConte, C. convexulus LeConte, and C. amictus Melsheimer. The following neotypes were designated to replace destroyed type specimens: C. cardisce (Say) and C. convexus.

We present rearing records of Agromyzidae (Diptera) from five years of collecting throughout the United States. We review host and distribution data, and describe leaf mines, for 93 species, plus 28 others that could not be confidently identified in the absence of male specimens. We report 147 new host species records, including the first rearing records for Agromyza bispinata Spencer, A. diversa Johnson, A. parca Spencer, A. pudica Spencer, A. vockerothi Spencer, Calycomyza michiganensis Steyskal, Ophiomyia congregata (Malloch), and Phytomyza aldrichi Spencer. Phytomyza anemones Hering and (tentatively identified) Cerodontha (Dizygomyza) iraeos (Robineau-Desvoidy) are new to North America; Agromyza albitarsis Meigen, Amauromyza shepherdiae Sehgal, Aulagromyza populicola (Walker), Liriomyza orilliensis Spencer, Phytomyza linnaeae (Griffiths), P. solidaginivora Spencer, and P. solidaginophaga Sehgal are new to the USA. We also present confirmed USA records for Calycomyza menthae Spencer (previous records were based only on leaf mines), Ophiomyia maura (Meigen) (reported from the USA in older literature but deleted from the fauna in the most recent revision (Spencer & Steyskal 1986)), and Phytomyza astotinensis Griffiths and P. thalictrivora Spencer (previously only tentatively recorded from the USA). We provide 111 additional new state records. We describe the following 30 new species: Agromyza fission, A. soka, Melanagromyza palmeri, Ophiomyia euthamiae, O. mimuli, O. parda, Calycomyza artemisivora, C. avira, C. eupatoriphaga, C. vogelmanni, Cerodontha (Dizygomyza) edithae, Cer. (D.) feldmani, Liriomyza ivorcutleri, L. valerianivora, Phytomyza actaeivora, P. aesculi, P. confusa, P. doellingeriae, P. erigeronis, P. hatfieldae, P. hydrophyllivora, P. palmeri, P. palustris, P. sempervirentis, P. tarnwoodensis, P. tigris, P. triangularidis, P. vancouveriella, P. verbenae, and P. ziziae.

Coccinellids are a conspicuous group of aphidophagous predators in maize, Zea mays L., in the Northern Great Plains of the United States. Numerous studies have been conducted on the ecology of coccinellids in maize in North America (Ewert and Chiang 1966a, 1966b; Smith 1971; Foott 1973; Wright and Laing 1980; Corderre and Tourneur 1986; Corderre et al. 1987). However, there have been few long-term surveys of coccinellids in maize. Foott (1973) reported on the abundance of coccinellid species inhabiting maize in eastern Canada over a 4-year period; no surveys of this type have been reported for the Northern Great Plains. We sampled coccinellids in maize fields at three sites in eastern South Dakota for 13 consecutive years to determine the species inhabiting the crop and levels of variation in their abundances among sites and years.

AbstractAdults of Bandakia hoffmannae sp.nov., Bandakia mexicana sp.nov., Chappuisides notialis sp.nov., and Neoacarus adocetus sp.nov., all collected in the mountains west of Mexico City, are described. These are the first reports of species of these three essentially holarctic genera from south of the United States border in North America. These discoveries provide new insight concerning the extent of refugial areas for freshwater arthropods in southern North America during the Pleistocene.

Late Mississippian and earliest Pennsylvanian trilobite faunas of North America are dominated by the Paladin and Kaskia clades. Phylogenetic analysis of middle Carboniferous species of these clades demonstrates the close ancestral relationship between these groups. The Kaskia clade consists of eight species: K. chesterensis Weller, 1936, K. osagensis (Cisne, 1967), K. longispina (Strong, 1872), K. wilsoni (Walter, 1924), K. genevievensis (Walter, 1924), K. rosei (Cisne, 1967), K. gersnai n. sp., and K. rollinsi n. sp. Kaskia Weller, 1936 ranges from late Osagean to middle Chesterian (early Visean-early Serpukhovian) and is restricted to cyclothemic shelf and nearshore deposits. Species of Kaskia appear to have evolved in areas of shallow water and high environmental stress. The Paladin clade consists of 12 species including previously named species P. morrowensis (Mather, 1915), P. girtyianus Hahn and Hahn, 1970, P. rarus Whittington, 1954, P. helmsensis Whittington, 1954, and P. moorei (Branson, 1937). New species belonging to this clade are Paladin moorefieldensis n. sp., P. pleisiomorphus n. sp., P. imoensis n. sp., P. mangeri n. sp., and P. wapanukaensis n. sp. This group ranges from the early Chesterian to early Morrowan (late Viseanlate Bashkirian). Species of Paladin appear to be confined to outer shelf shelf-edge and off-shelf facies where presumably deeper water environments existed. This is manifested in their paleogeographic distribution, which is paleoenvironmentally controlled.

AbstractSix new species of Mucroseius having adult females phoretic on adult sawyer beetles of the genus Monochamus are described: Mucroseius nipponensis and Mucroseius squamosus from Monochamus alternatus Hope in Japan, Mucroseius algonquian from three species of Monochamus in eastern Canada and eastern United States, Mucroseius disparisetus from Monochamus titillator (Fabricius) in southeastern United States, Mucroseius Californicus from Monochamus clamator (LeConte) in California, and Mucroseius mexicanus from Monochamus rubigineus (Bates) in Mexico. Mucroseius aciculatus (Ishikawa, 1968), new combination, from Mecynippus pubicornis Bates in Japan, and the type-species, Mucroseius monochami Lindquist, 1962, from several species of Monochamus widely distributed in North America, are redescribed. Misidentifications of these species in the Japanese and North American literature are noted, and a key is given for these eight species. One adult female of an undescribed species found on a sawyer, Monochamus sutor Linnaeus, from Europe, is noted as possibly belonging to Mucroseius.The taxon Mucroseius is redescribed, and its problematic status as a genus is reviewed. The phylogenetic position of Mucroseius, which appears to be derived within the genus Proctolaelaps, is discussed. Previous observations on biological and ecological aspects of Mucroseius mites, including those published in Japanese, are critically reviewed, with new data added for host ranges and specificities, distribution, phoretic behavior, occurrence in sawyer gallery systems, mode of reproduction, and their association with the pine wood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (Steiner and Buhrer) Nickle. Cheliceral structure and speculations on the feeding habits of these mites are discussed; however, feeding preferences have not been clarified.

Cyphocleonus achates (Fahaeus) is a Eurasian, root-feeding weevil introduced into North America for the biological control of spotted knapweed, Centaurea maculosa Lamarck. Stinson et al. (1994) reported that C. achates is one of the most damaging root-feeding insects on knapweed in Eurasia and should be a valuable addition to the biocontrol effort in North America. The biology, host specificity, and potential impact of the weevil were described by Stinson et al. (1994). Larvae mine into the root cortex where they induce formation of a conspicuous root gall. Feeding by older larvae causes much damage, especially to small plants or plants containing several larvae. The weevil overwinters as a larva in the root and emerges as an adult from mid-July to October. Adult weevils are large (14 mm long) and flightless, and feed on knapweed foliage. The weevil has one generation per year.

Six new species of Collembola of the family Arrhopalitidae are described from the United States (Pygmarrhopalites leonardwoodensis sp. nov., P. plethorasari sp. nov., P. youngsteadtii sp. nov., P. buffaloensis sp. nov., P. shoshoneiensis sp. nov., and P. ashcraftensis sp. nov.) from caves in Missouri (2 spp.), Arkansas (2 spp.), Nevada, and Indiana, respectively. These new taxa, which display varying degrees of troglomorphy, are compared with previously known species and bring the total described species in North America to 41.

The Bembidion aenulum subgroup of the subgenus Odontium is reviewed. This subgroup, widespread in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains, previously has been considered to consist of only one species, Bembidion aenulum Hayward. However, morphological studies coupled with analyses of 28S ribosomal RNA, cytochrome oxidase I, CAD, and wingless genes reveal that eastern members of this group belong to a new species herein named Bembidion paraenulum new species. This species ranges from New Hampshire in the northeast, through Virginia and North Carolina, south to Florida and west to Mississippi. Both species are described and illustrated.
