AbstractI introduce the five articles in this special issue of Comparative Sociology as each applies the theory of enlightened localism. First I outline the theory in question and then highlight those aspects that each of the authors deploys, the criticisms each levels at it, and the suggestions each offers toward its improvement. Lea Ypi applies the theory to human rights in a way that might reconcile universal norms with the need for individual motivation that can only be local. Jonathan White uses the theory to develop a conception of the European Union that would preserve rather than, as now, repress the partisan politicking at the core of democracy. Junmin Wang finds the theory helpful in analyzing the unintended decentralization of political power in China as a consequence of recent economic reforms. Ko Hasegawa seeks an enlightened localist solution to the problematic integration of a minority population into mainstream Japanese society. Manuel Ahedo enlists the theory in combating ghettoized schooling all too typical for immigrant children in Europe with ideas for integrating the children of immigrants with those of long-established residents. I conclude by listing some of the questions raised by the articles and to be addressed by future research ‐ concerns that might move an enlightened localist approach forward.

In this interview to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Theory, Culture & Society special issue on Global Culture, Roland Robertson reflects on his long involvement as one of the major theorists of globalization. He recounts how in his early years as a sociologist there was strong resistance to thinking beyond the nation-state society. He comments on the emergence of the field of transdisciplinary global studies, the concern with global culture and his own attempts to extend the concept of globalization by developing the term glocalization. He also discusses the present Covid-19 pandemic and ends with a number of reflections on global history.

This editorial article reflects on the paradigmatic changes that the Colombian ELT community has recently experienced due to the developments of local scholarship in varied topics. This editorial article makes the changes evident by introducing the papers for this special issue of HOW journal on its 30th anniversary. These include topics as interculturality, literacy, English language pre-service teacher construction and professional development, critical views about bilingual education policy, and the interrelation between gender and ELT. The local scholarship development in these topics displays a rupture with the ELT canon. By so doing, the Colombian ELT scholarship shows a potency that wields foundations for the ELT field in the country.

The 1960S

Mechatronics - an ever-growing field enblacing actuators and sensors, electronics and mechanics, controls, system design and integration was founded in Japan at the end of the 1960s. It now supports industrial development, the global economy and inventions that enable people to live comfortably around the world.Asia is one of the most active areas in mechatronics research. Asian experts meet and mix in meetings and conferences such as the Japan-China symposium on Mechatronics started in 1988, Asia International Symposium on Mechatronics (AISM) organized by the Japanese Society of Precision Engineering and Chinese committees since 2004 to bring together researchers and engineers in this multidisciplinary field to stimulate new ideas, to share knowledge on practical problems and solutions, as well as to facilitate cooperation for the future.This special issue on “Mechatronics Technologies from Asia to the World” includes many of the fine papers presented at AISM2008 in August 2008, and encourages scientists in related fields to submit their research to encourage interested researchers in developing systems and technologies to become more skilled, smarter and tougher in the real world.We thank the authors for their interesting contributions and the reviewers for their devoted time and effort.
