The early Browning: Pastoral care in a pluralistic age and the method of practical moral inquiry

The past president of the International Academy of Practical Theology, Prof. Donald Browning, has written books and articles across a wide variety of topics concerning the correlation of many great fields of knowledge, including theology, psychology, philosophy, sociology, practical theology, ethics, family therapy and ecology over the past 40 years. Prof. Browning passed away on 03 June 2010. This left the author of this article with a desire to begin to reassess some of Browning’s earlier reflections regarding his vision of pastoral care in a pluralistic age and the importance of his method of practical moral inquiry.

The Ideal

This book lays out a vision for how we should theorize about justice in a diverse society. It shows how free and equal people, faced with intractable struggles and irreconcilable conflicts, might share a common moral life shaped by a just framework. The book argues that if we are to take diversity seriously and if moral inquiry is sincere about shaping the world, then the pursuit of idealized and perfect theories of justice—essentially, the entire production of theories of justice that has dominated political philosophy for the past forty years—needs to change. Drawing on recent work in social science and philosophy, the book points to an important paradox: only those in a heterogeneous society—with its various religious, moral, and political perspectives—have a reasonable hope of understanding what an ideally just society would be like. However, due to its very nature, this world could never be collectively devoted to any single ideal. The book defends the moral constitution of this pluralistic, open society, where the very clash and disagreement of ideals spurs all to better understand what their personal ideals of justice happen to be. Presenting an original framework for how we should think about morality, this book rigorously analyzes a theory of ideal justice more suitable for contemporary times.

Abstract This paper is a response to Heather Walton’s 2017 Presidential Address to the International Academy of Practical Theology, “A Theopoetics of Practice – Re-forming in Practical Theology.” It explores a key question raised by Walton: “If we were to construct a way of imagining a theopoetics of practical theology, what would it look like?” The paper critiques systematic and speculative thinking, reflects on Holy Saturday, and offers a poetic reflection on creation and natural love.

The Past

The climate in German Catholic pastoral care of youth with regards to sex education is in a sorry plight. This is due to the fact that the conflicts of the past are still very much alive. At the same time, however, there is a positive potential for development in this field of pastoral care of youth. This is especially significant, because friendship and sexuality are such important themes for children and young people. Indeed, pastoral care of youth will have to take into account their special life situation and the changed social context. Individualised, postmodern society offers a large number of sexual options. Against this background, we will end by outlining some fundamental perspectives for sex educational concepts in pastoral care of youth, in which teaching them to love and the ability to form relationships is central.

In this exclusive interview, Dimitrios P Kontoyiannis discusses current mycology hot topic, Candida auris. With a focus on the current knowns and unknowns for the pathogenesis, resistance and transmission of this emerging fungal pathogen, in addition to a look at therapeutics and future perspectives. This interview was conducted by Ellen Colvin, Commissioning Editor of Future Microbiology. Dimitrios P Kontoyiannis is the Texas 4000 distinguished endowed professor and deputy head in the Division of Internal Medicine at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston (TX, USA). Dr Kontoyiannis has authored over 550 peer-reviewed manuscripts and has given over 330 lectures in national and international conferences and academic institutions in the USA and abroad. He is considered a leading mycology expert world-wide with an H index of 101 and over 43,000 citations. His research group is credited for many and sustained contributions to clinical, translational and experimental mycology. He is the recipient of many national and international awards and is the past president elect of Immunocompromised Host Society (2016–2018).

In the past the debate concerning the occult has been dominated by the question: "Is it possible that a Christian can he occultly plagued? " While one interpretation of Luke 13:l0 - 17 n suggests that it is possible, another interpretation of this passage front Scripture suggests that such a conclusion drawn from Luke 13 would be incorrect. However, the article suggests that subjective points of view may influence and mar the scientific approach to the exegesis of Luke 13. The article attempts to evaluate exegetic commentaries in an objective manner while also inquiring into the relevance of 2 Corinthians 12:1-10 for the issue under debate. Some conclusions for pastoral care and counselling are derived from the conclusions.
