Poor Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMMS) results and widespread disappointing mathematics results in South Africa necessitate research-based and more efficient professional development for in-service mathematics teachers. This article reports on the profiling of mathematics teachers’ statistical knowledge, beliefs and confidence in order to inform the development of in-service teacher education programmes in statistics for Grade 8 and Grade 9 teachers. Ninety mathematics teachers from schools with culturally diverse learner populations in an urban region in South Africa were profiled using an adapted profiling instrument (Watson, 2001). Although statistics formed part of quite a number of these teachers’ initial teacher education and about half of them were involved in professional development in statistics education, they still teach traditionally, rather than using a more data driven approach. Teachers indicated high levels of confidence in teaching most statistics topics but showed low levels of statistical thinking when they had to apply their knowledge of concepts, such as sample and average in social contexts including newspaper articles and research reports.

AbstractAlthough the effects of professional development programs on teachers’ noticing skills have attracted considerable interest among mathematics education researchers, little is known about the developmental process of prospective teachers’ noticing skills within initial teacher education. This paper examines the extent to which prospective teachers’ noticing skills are developed through the mathematics education courses taken within the mathematics teachers’ education program using exemplarily the topic division of fractions. The study is grounded on the framework of Professional Noticing of Children’s Mathematical Thinking which specifies three facets of noticing, that are attending, interpreting, and deciding how to respond. Twenty-two prospective mathematics teachers (PSTs), who were enrolled in the Middle School Mathematics Teacher Education Program at a Turkish university, participated in this study. The results revealed that most PSTs gained expertise in all three kinds of noticing skills during their teacher education. The highest progression could be identified in the interpretation skills and the lowest in attending skills. These results are important for initial teacher education programs, highlighting that general, non-specialized mathematics education courses within initial teacher education have the potential to provide an efficient professional development program to develop PST’s noticing skills. The study points out that further research is needed in order to provide additional details about how teacher education programs could be redesigned and implemented to ensure opportunities for PSTs to develop noticing skills within all three facets leading to robust or at least substantial evidence of all three noticing skills.

The client analysis conducted in this study explores the professional development needs of11 language teachers, five in South Africa and six in Canada. The study employs a questionnaire and interviews to discover how each teacher's background and context affects his or her perceived professional development needs. Interviews show that teacher educators cannot necessarily predict teachers' professional development needs based on their backgrounds and contexts alone. A variety of inputs from recipients over an extended time is desirable and would yield more accurate predictability of an individual's professional development needs. This would result in teacher education programs that more accurately meet a teacher's real needs.

There are a multitude of concepts and techniques that could be important for teachers tolearn during their initial teacher education (ITE), but indiscriminately including all of themwould result in an overcrowded and fragmented curriculum. Given the limited time for ITE,rational knowledge selection choices must be made if coherent programmes are to beoffered to prospective teachers. This paper explores the approaches taken to addressing thecritical challenges facing education in South Africa and the principles from knowledgeselection that arise from these approaches. Different conceptions about how best to addressthese challenges offer directed priorities to guide knowledge selection decisions for ITEcurricula. Examples of knowledge selection principles that variously promote conceptual orcontextual coherence are presented and analysed, and tradeoffs associated with each one areconsidered. Although some recontextualising principles are mutually incompatiable, othershave the potential to coexist. In a four-year qualification, where sequencing choices can bemade, there exists the possibility of introducing different principles at different timeswithout unduly compromising internal coherence. A challenge for those who design ITEcurricula is to design conceptually coherent and/or contextually responsive curricula fullyaware of the affordances and limitations offered by different recontextualising principles.

UiT Norges arktiske universitet har gjennomført en nasjonal pilot i grunnskolelærerutdanning på masternivå, hvor de første studentene fullførte utdanningen og leverte masteroppgave våren 2015. Denne artikkelen fokuserer på hvilken relevans studentene opplever at masteroppgaven har for den fremtidige profesjonsutøvelsen deres. Å undersøke studentenes oppfatning av masterarbeidet er av betydning, ikke bare fordi masterutdanning blir en nasjonal ordning fra 2017, men også for å utvikle kunnskap om betydningen av forsknings- og utviklingskompetanse for grunnskolelærere. Studiens empiriske materiale er en intervjuundersøkelse med 22 av de 61 første masterstudentene. Undersøkelsen inngår i en longitudinell studie som vil belyse nyutdannedes profesjonslæring i starten av karrieren, og konkret hvordan lærere integrerer kunnskapen fra utdanningen med kunnskap og erfaringer de utvikler som ferske lærere. Resultatene fra denne delstudien viser at masterarbeidet har gitt studentene dybdekunnskap og FoU-kompetanse som er av betydning for den videre profesjonsutøvelsen. Studien viser også at det er betydningsfullt at masteroppgaven har forankring i skolens praksis og bidrar til utviklingen som lærer. Av materialet fremgår det også at studentene fremhever selvstendighet og evne til samarbeid, og de er stolte av masterarbeidet sitt. Resultatene er drøftet opp mot begrepene konseptuell og kontekstuell kunnskap (Afdal & Nerland, 2012; Muller, 2009) og i lys av profesjonsteori. Masterarbeidet synes avgjørende for profesjonsidentiteten, men det vil kreves et systematisk utviklingsarbeid for å kunne gi masterarbeidet kvaliteter som kan støtte opp om studentenes utvikling som profesjonelle lærere. In relation to this, The University of Tromsø, the Arctic University of Norway, in 2010 launched a national pilot program in teacher education: a five year long research-based master’s degree, divided into two programs adjusted to the Norwegian educational system: 1st–7th and 5th–10th grade, from which the first students graduated in the spring of 2015. This article aims to examine the importance the master’s thesis holds for teacher education student’s development of knowledge and future professional work. The analyzed data consist of interviews conducted with 22 of the 61 graduating students from the national pilot program. The study is part of a five-year longitudinal research project, illuminating professional development of newly educated teachers with a master’s degree and in what way knowledge from Initial Teacher Education sustains when encountering the profession. It is important to explore the students’ views of the thesis, not only because the five-year master’s programs will be implemented on a national level, but also because knowledge about the significance of R&D for school teachers is needed. Our analysis shows that the results of the work with the thesis are deep knowledge, R&D competence deemed relevant for teaching, autonomy and interpersonal skills: the students reported feeling proud of their own work. The results are discussed in relation to the concepts contextual and conceptual knowledge (Afdal & Nerland, 2012; Muller, 2009) as well as relating to theories of professionalism. To achieve excellence in a R&D-based program, which can support student teachers’ professional development, a systematic and evolving approach is cruical.
