Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a common medical condition that results in numbness, pain and tingling in the arm and constitutes about 90% of neuropathy entrapments. The condition arises when the median nerve in the arm is compressed. CTS can degenerate rapidly to cause nerve damage. The effects of CTS on medical practitioners can be serious given the speculation that the condition is work-related. Consequently, this study seeks to establish the prevalence and knowledge of CTS among dental practitioners in the city of Riyadh. In doing so, the research attempts to find relationships between CTS and workload and the experience of the dental practitioners. The study takes the model of sectional study that targets dental practitioners specifically in the city of Riyadh. The researchers recruited 190 dentists and used google forms to collect data from the respondents. The questions in the survey related to symptoms of the condition and the related demographics. The study found a significant comparison of the prevalence and knowledge of CTS among various subgroups. Daily patient exposure and work experience were some of the underlying features discovered in the study. Dentists with more work experience demonstrated significant knowledge on the condition and registered an equally high prevalence of pain associated with CST. The findings of the research show a direct correlation between workload, work experience, and CST.

Musculoskeletal pathology reaches important proportions in dental practitioners. Besides the articular manifestations of inflammatory or degenerative rheumatism, in daily practice we often find patients suffering from abarticular pathological processes, during which tendons, synovial dysplasia, schizophrenia, fascia, aponevrozes are affected. The Carpal Tunnel Syndrome represents a compressive neuropathy of the median nerve inside the carpal tunnel of the wrist. Any condition that lowers the dimensions of the carpal tunnel can cause symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. The carpal channel (Carpal Tunnel) is divided by a sagittal fibrous divider into two osteofibrosis osteofibrosis: medial and lateral. This blade separates from the posterior aspect of the flexor retina and is inserted into the carpal bones (scaffold, trapezoid and capita). This syndrome has received particular attention in recent years due to the fact that it can occur in people whose work involves repetitive hand activities. Repeated use of the hand, repetition of the same movements and activities of the hand and wrist, over a long period of time, can cause inflammation of the tendons in the wrist, causing swelling, which puts pressure on the nerve. Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome begin gradually - without specific trauma. It is a gradual process for most people, carpal tunnel syndrome is aggravated over time without appropriate treatment. The study includes a batch of 75 dentists from Galati County, selected following the application of the inclusion criteria referring to the presence of signs and symptoms characterizing carpal tunnel syndrome in 2015-2017. Sensitivity disorders and paraesthesias accompanying nerve suffering are symptoms that create discomfort and contributes to the deterioration of pretension and force so useful to the professional act of dental medicine. Perceived cramping pain, often of moderate intensity, located at the fist and distal in the distribution area of the median nerve, rarely the pains are intense and radiate upward along upper limb to shoulder.

Abstract Background Almost all women experience some degree of musculoskeletal disorder during pregnancy, and almost a quarter of them develop at least temporarily musculoskeletal disorders during pregnancy. The most common of which is lower back pain, which affects half of all pregnant women. In this study, we aimed to determine the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders caused by pregnancy in women referred to Motahari Hospital of Urmia. Methods The present study is a cross-sectional study in which 344 pregnant patients referred to Motahari and Imam Hospitals of Urmia during 2020 were studied. The demographic factors and pregnancy characteristics of patients were recorded and evaluated. Patients were also questioned and examined using a questionnaire. The relationship between demographic factors and the frequency of various skeletal abnormalities was investigated. Results The mean age of patients and the mean gestational age were 27 ± 4.76 years and 22 ± 3.4 weeks, respectively. The analysis of the relationship between age, gravid and parity of pregnant women with the prevalence of complaints and clinical examination findings, indicated women with gravid 4 or more had more complaints of back pain (p-value = 0.021). It was also found that there is a statistical relationship between the increase in body mass index of patients and the frequency of wrist pain and carpal tunnel syndrome in the study population (p-value = 0.03). Conclusions The present study indicated the rate of musculoskeletal complaints of patients and pathological factors such as lumbar hyperlordosis in women with higher gravidity is higher than other groups of pregnant women. Larger body mass index is associated with more wrist pain and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Abstract Permanent impairment cannot be assessed until the patient is at maximum medical improvement (MMI), but the proper time to test following carpal tunnel release often is not clear. The AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment (AMA Guides) states: “Factors affecting nerve recovery in compression lesions include nerve fiber pathology, level of injury, duration of injury, and status of end organs,” but age is not prognostic. The AMA Guides clarifies: “High axonotmesis lesions may take 1 to 2 years for maximum recovery, whereas even lesions at the wrist may take 6 to 9 months for maximal recovery of nerve function.” The authors review 3 studies that followed patients’ long-term recovery of hand function after open carpal tunnel release surgery and found that estimates of MMI ranged from 25 weeks to 24 months (for “significant improvement”) to 18 to 24 months. The authors suggest that if the early results of surgery suggest a patient's improvement in the activities of daily living (ADL) and an examination shows few or no symptoms, the result can be assessed early. If major symptoms and ADL problems persist, the examiner should wait at least 6 to 12 months, until symptoms appear to stop improving. A patient with carpal tunnel syndrome who declines a release can be rated for impairment, and, as appropriate, the physician may wish to make a written note of this in the medical evaluation report.
