This is a brief review covering the currently available literature on ocular manifestations of COVID-19, andprevention strategies for ophthalmologists. A literature search was carried out of Pubmed, Google Scholar andWHO database of publications on COVID. Keywords used in the search were eye, ocular manifestations, ophthalmology, COVID-19, nCoV-2019, and coronavirus disease. All available articles were reviewed and thosepertinent to the study topic were included. Considering the dearth of information available, ophthalmology journals were also searched separately for relevant articles. Major ocular manifestation of COVID reported in literature is red eye, which usually presents before the onset of respiratory symptoms. Since the eye can be a possible transmission route for SARS-CoV-2, infection control measures should be undertaken by ophthalmologists, including use of personal protection equipment and eye/face covering. A framework for structuring ophthalmological services during the COVID pandemic is also presented in this review.

Middle aortic syndrome (MAS) is a rare disease characterized by distal thoracic aorta or abdominal aorta coarctation, and thoraco-abdominal aortic bypass grafting is an effective treatment for this condition. However, significant trauma is associated with the conventional surgical approach. We report a 26-year-old woman with MAS who presented with hypertension and needed thoraco-abdominal bypass grafting. In this operation, we adopted the endoscopic technique to improve the conventional surgical approach (reduce the incision). This case report shows that it is safe and feasible to use an endoscopic technique to reduce the trauma during this kind of operation, and provides a reference for similar treatments.

Neuromyelitis optica (NMO), mainly affecting optic nerve and spinal cord, can also manifest diverse ocular symptoms due to brain abnormalities. We present a cortical oscillopsia without nystagmus or head tremor in a patient with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) with anti-aquaporin 4 antibody. This rare ocular manifestation, which is easily underestimated owing to absence of the typical nystagmus, can be an initial manifestation of NMOSD.

Middle aortic syndrome is a rare anatomic defect of the descending aorta and presents with hypertension. We present a unique case with “corkscrew” configuration. This case highlights the need for evaluation with advanced imaging for diagnosis to facilitate surgical management and avoid hypertensive complications.

Middle Aortic Syndrome is a rare vascular disorder consisting of narrowing or stenosis of the distal thoracic or abdominal aorta. It is described in the literature in the form of case studies and case series. The authors present an unusual case of Middle Aortic Syndrome attributed to Takayasu’s arteritis in a 60-year-old female who presented to the emergency department with uncontrolled hypertension. Traditional intervention involves open surgical bypass. This case study reviews the published literature on this rare syndrome and illustrates a successful alternative to open surgery through an endovascular approach.
