A fundamental objective of environmental education (EE) and education for sustainable development (ESD) is the promotion of critical thinking, through which learners could resist messages (e.g., from TV), leading to unsustainable lifestyles and practices. The analysis of messages from media was used for: identifying influencing techniques; presenting these techniques to secondary school students allowing them to identify the techniques in messages from advertisements and assess their impact. After a very brief educational intervention, 84 per cent of the students were able to identify and decode techniques and make useful reflections. Furthermore, some techniques were tested as potentially useful for enhancing learning and/or environmental-friendly attitudes. The use of advertisement methods in teaching did not facilitate the assimilation of knowledge related to environmental science (chemistry); however, it improved the attitudes towards environmental-friendly and sustainable approaches.

The complexity of environmental and sustainability challenges has created an ongoing need for innovative and integrated approaches to address them. Design disciplines have a long history. The method “design thinking”, originally applied in architecture, engineering and business, has led to new and creative problem solving, thus creating much potential for use in sustainable development planning. While principles of good design are well established, there has been limited integration of design thinking with environmental science, sustainable development planning and education. This research was focused on how a sustainability approach can be merged with design thinking to develop socially responsible and environmentally sustainable products and services. The case study has been carried out in the master’s study course Sustainable Development Planning. Some of basic principles and stages of design thinking, such as empathy, creativity, collaboration, responsibility and interdisciplinary approach have been tested by using students project work evaluation regarding certain criteria and survey after the study course. The first results of approbated design thinking principles and methods, significant advantages and disadvantages and the perspective of using this method have been analysed and discussed. As the result from this study proposals for the improvement of the content of this study course and related study courses (a study course on sustainable development issues is compulsory in all undergraduate study programs in Latvia) and for the specification of test tasks have been developed, considering also future needs to provide the study course remotely.

This reflective note is a response to the first international Conference on Transformative Education Research and Sustainable Development that took place in Dhulikhel, Nepal, in October 2016. In this reflective note, I begin by pondering on what makes a novice academic creative and transformative. Then, I deal with the conference atmosphere, contemplate how it connects close to my heart, and finally conclude with my realisation of transformation inside. I particularly reflect on my experiences of being a volunteer to help the scholars from various parts of the world; a rapporteur to witness various talk presentations and report on them; and a participant to attend and learn from some exemplary reports and presentations – all centred at transformative education.

Basically each product or service has its own life cycle. Life Cycle Analysis Method can be used to assess the impact of an activity both production and service activities. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) or Analisis Mengenai Dampak Lingkungan (AMDAL) is one of the activities that must be fulfilled in order to obtain an environmental permit. EIA activities have a life cycle process that needs to be known and understood so that environmental permits can be obtained. Therefore this study aims to find out the use of the LCA method in EIA procedures. In addition, with the LCA method, EIA activities are expected to be well studied according to the function of this service. LCA can provide to reduce the least impact from environmental damage. This research will be useful for the development of environmental science, especially related to the study of environmental impacts, especially EIA. It is expected that the results of the study will provide a complete picture of the relevance of the LCA method with EIA and the benefits that can be taken. The results of this study will be an important recommendation for decision makers regarding the importance of EIA in development, especially sustainable development through the method used, namely LCA.
