EVALUATION OF METHODS OF EXTRACTING SOIL CATIONS FOR FOREST PRODUCTIVITY STUDIES IN SOUTHWESTERN BRITISH COLUMBIA

The NH4OAc pH 7 method has been used traditionally to assess the availability of cations in soils for tree growth in coastal British Columbia but there have been no attempts to assess the validity of the method for this purpose. This objective was accomplished by determining the quantities of extractable cations (K, Mg, and Ca) in 42 forest soils in the Coastal Western Hemlock Biogeoclimatic Zone of British Columbia using four different extraction methods. The methods used were the NH4OAc pH 7, NH4OAc pH 4.8, 10% HCl, and 1% citric acid methods. A stepwise elimination multiple-regression technique was used to test the relationship of extracted cations to forest productivity. The amounts of cations extracted by the NH4OAc method were well-correlated with those extracted by each of the other three methods. Of the cation quantities extracted, those of Ca were best, although still poorly correlated with productivity. Of the extraction methods, the NaOAc method yielded quantities most closely correlated with productivity and is recommended for use in assessing the cation status of forest soils in the Coastal Western Hemlock biogeoclimatic zone.

Abstract Unopened western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) cones from coastal British Columbia were tested for the relationship between total filled seeds per cone and the number of sound seeds exposed by slicing through the center of the cone's long axis, and with cone length. Predictive linear relationships of total number of filled seeds per cone (TFS), based on number of filled seeds cut on the face through the cone's long axis (CC), were found in a cone sample bulked from a number of trees. The regression based on CC explained about 63% of the variation in TFS. More accurate estimates of TFS were found where cone length, and exponential factors of CC and cone length, were included in the analysis. Analyses of cones from seven parents did not find statistically significant trends of TFS on CC in all cases, and differed in slope in most cases. Sample sizes (cones) to estimate TFS to a predetermined level of precision were much larger than cones needed to accept or reject a tree for study. West. J. Appl. For. (11)2:44-49.

Spawning salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) are important resources for terrestrial ecosystems and often shape the ecological strategies of organisms with which they co-evolve. Gray wolves (Canis lupus), primarily predators of ungulates, are sympatric with salmon over large areas, but the relationship between the two remains poorly understood. We report here observations of direct and indirect evidence of salmon predation by wolves in several watersheds of coastal British Columbia and in detail report on the foraging behaviour of four wolves at one river during September and October 2001. Wolves oriented themselves upstream during detection and pursuit of salmon. The pooled mean capture rate was 21.5 salmon/h and mean efficiency (successes/attempt) was 39.4%. In most cases, wolves consumed only heads of salmon, perhaps for nutritional reasons or parasite avoidance. Preying on salmon may be adaptive, as this nutritious and spatially constrained resource imposes lower risks of injury compared with hunting large mammals. We infer from capture rates and efficiencies, as well as stereotypical hunting and feeding behaviour, a history of salmon predation by wolves and, as a corollary, a broad distribution of this foraging ecology where wolves and salmon still co-exist.

Hemloclc dwarf mistletoe (Arcenthobiiuntsugense (Rosend.) G. N. Jones) principally infects western hemlock (Tsugaheteropliylla (Raf.) Sarg.), but it is also damaging to shore pine (Pinuscontorta Dougl. ex Loud.) growing in coastal British Columbia. Stands of varied composition were studied in the Home Lake area of Vancouver Island to compare the levels of infection in shore pine and western hemlock. Infection of shore pine occurred whether or not infected hemlock trees were present in the stand. Observations and measurements from these field studies support indications from earlier artificial inoculation trials that two ecological races of A. tsugense exist.

Background Electronic e-cigarette ever users has been increasing as of 2015, the most prevalent ever users being young adults aged 20-24 years old. The implication of e-cigarette ever user developing into long term users is a emerging public health concern. Methods Electronic cigarette usage frequency and nicotine consumption was measured through a self-administered online survey of young adults (n= 54). Survey was advertised through social media sites between January 2019 till February 2019. Descriptive and inferential statistic was conducted using NCSS 12 to examine the association between electronic cigarette usage and nicotine consumption. Results Among young adults aged 19 to 24 years old, the frequency of e-cigarette usage was 51% high usage, 31% no usage and 16% medium and low usage. For nicotine consumption, respondents were 25% daily, 40% no use, 18% infrequent, and 14.8% frequent. Conclusion There is an association between more frequent electronic cigarette usage and higher nicotine consumption among young adults in British Columbia. Frequency e-cigarette users were found to consumption nicotine at higher frequency then non users. Further research is needed to fully understand the extent of the relationship of if e-cigarette usage promotes daily nicotine consumption or daily nicotine consumption results in higher e-cigarette usage.

The fecundity of Pacific herring was investigated from a collection of 600 ovaries gathered from various localities along the British Columbia coast during the winter and early spring of 1954–55. It was found that fecundity depended mainly on body length and to a lesser extent on age, independently of its effect on body length. Certain differences in fecundity, found between herring from various localities when die relationship of fecundity to body length was considered, were not found when the relationship between fecundity, body length and age was considered. These differences were attributed to differences in growth rate. Fecundity of herring of same body length and the same age was found to be significantly higher in northern British Columbia than in southern.

California dairy farmers producing and selling Grade A milk for pasteurization receive payment based on milkfat and solids-not-fat content of raw milk. In 1970, the concept of using electronic methods for testing of milk and its components was accepted by the California Department of Food and Agriculture. The InfraRed Milk Analyzer (IRMA) with its ability to measure fat, protein, and lactose, using a predetermined factor for the unmeasured solids, appeared to fill the need for a rapid, accurate, and economical method. After comparing IRMA results with chemical tests of known accuracy for several seasons, it appeared the ash factor could vary seasonally and geographically, as well as with individual dairy herds. It was decided to study the accuracy and calibration stability of InfraRed Milk Analyzers (IRMA), as well as the use of a constant value for the ash factor. By applying a multiple regression technique to milk sample data, it was possible to generate a model describing the relationship of fat, protein, and lactose to total solids (and solids-not-fat).

In coastal British Columbia, late-successional forests dominated by western redcedar (Thuja plicata Donn ex D. Don) are structurally complex, with deep multi-layered canopies, large trees that are > 250 years old, and abundant coarse woody debris (CWD). These forests are presumed to be "old-growth" forests in which fine-scale gaps are the dominant disturbance regime, accounting for their structural diversity. In this study, I have used tree-ring analyses to investigate western redcedar regeneration dynamics in these old-growth forests. Western redcedar dominates canopies of many stands, but is rare in the understorey although it tolerates shade. The traditional interpretation is that western redcedar depends on catastrophic disturbance to regenerate and that it is replaced through succession by western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.) and Pacific silver fir (Abies amabilis (Dougl. ex Loud.) Dougl. ex J. Forbes), which are abundant in the understorey. Dominant trees are perceived to represent an even-aged, post-disturbance cohort and the lack of regeneration indicates a population decline in the absence of catastrophic disturbances. In this paper, I investigate four assumptions underlying this interpretation: (1) Tree size indicates age. (2) Populations establish as even-aged, post-disturbance cohorts. (3) Abundant CWD represents recent mortality. (4) Regeneration is insufficient to maintain canopy dominance. Using tree-ring evidence, I show that population dynamics of western redcedar are a combination of gap-phase establishment and a continuous mode of recruitment from the sub-canopy to the canopy. Specifically, size is a poor surrogate for tree age. Age distributions from 15 sites revealed uneven-aged populations, rather than single post-disturbance cohorts. Both logs and snags of western redcedar may persist more than 270 years; they do not represent recent mortality that is disproportionate to the number of live western redcedar in canopy. The regeneration niches of western redcedar and western hemlock overlap. For both species, gap-phase disturbances result in substrate suitable for successful seedling establishment. Preliminary results from dendroecological analysis of radial growth rates of trees in the subcanopy and canopy strata suggest that western hemlock and Pacific silver fir depend on gaps to recruit to the upper canopy, but recruitment of western redcedar may be independent of canopy gaps. I propose that differences in mode of recruitment to the canopy may explain the differences in population structures between western redcedar, western hemlock, and Pacific silver fir in the old-growth forest. These results provide an ecological precedent for use of a range of silvicultural systems, including clearcuts through single-tree harvesting and protection forests, when managing western redcedar in coastal British Columbia. Specific information about the applied forces that cause trees to fail is required to validate mechanistic models of windthrow in different forest types. Static tree-pulling tests were conducted to examine the overturning resistance of western redcedar ( Thuja plicata Donn ex D. Don) and western hemlock ( Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.) in a mixed species second-growth stand in coastal British Columbia. Although widely used, tree-pulling techniques are not standardized. Data from three inclinometers were used to estimate stem deflection, which was found to increase with tree slenderness. Differing methods of fitting stem curvature had a small effect on estimates of self-loading at failure. The distance of the pivot point from the centre of the stem base increased with tree diameter. Accounting for the correct self-loading at failure produced a small difference in the overall turning moment regressions but did not improve the fit of these regressions. However, this difference increased with tree size and warrants consideration in future tree-pulling tests with large or plate-rooted trees. The stem mass – overturning resistance relationship had the best fit and was not significantly different for these species in spite of their differences in wood density and stem form.
