A new algorithm for constructing orthogonal curvilinear grids on a sphere for a fairly general geometric shape of the modeling region is implemented as a “compile-once - use forever” software package. It is based on the numerical solution of the inverse problem by an iterative procedure -- finding such distribution of grid points along its perimeter, so that the conformal transformation of the perimeter into a rectangle turns this distribution into uniform one. The iterative procedure itself turns out to be multilevel - i.e. an iterative loop built around another, internal iterative procedure. Thereafter, knowing this distribution, the grid nodes inside the region are obtained solving an elliptic problem. It is shown that it was possible to obtain the exact orthogonality of the perimeter at the corners of the grid, to achieve very small, previously unattainable level of orthogonality errors, as well as make it isotropic -- local distances between grid nodes about both directions are equal to each other.

AbstractThe influence of concentration of solute particles on squeeze film lubrication between two poroelastic surfaces has been analyzed using a mathematical model. Newtonian viscous fluid is considered as a lubricant whose viscosity varies linearly with concentration of suspended solute particles. Convection-diffusion model is proposed to study the concentration of solute particles and is solved using finite difference method of Crank–Nicolson scheme. An iterative procedure is used to get the solution for concentration, pressure and velocity components in film region. It has been observed that load carrying capacity decreases as the concentration of solute particles in the fluid film decreases. Further, the concentration of suspended solute particles decreases as the permeability of the poroelastic plate increases and these results may be useful in understanding the mechanism of human joint.

AbstractThe thermodynamic compatibility defined by the Drucker postulate applied to a phenomenological hysteretic material, belonging to a recently formulated class, is hereby investigated. Such a constitutive model is defined by means of a set of algebraic functions so that it does not require any iterative procedure to compute the response and its tangent operator. In this sense, the model is particularly feasible for dynamic analysis of structures. Moreover, its peculiar formulation permits the computation of thermodynamic compatibility conditions in closed form. It will be shown that, in general, the fulfillment of the Drucker postulate for arbitrary displacement ranges requires strong limitations of the constitutive parameters. Nevertheless, it is possible to determine a displacement compatibility range for arbitrary sets of parameters so that the Drucker postulate is fulfilled as long as the displacement amplitude does not exceed the computed threshold. Numerical applications are provided to test the computed compatibility conditions.

Rock yielding may well take place during hydraulic fracturing in deep reservoirs. The prevailing models based on the linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) are incapable of describing the evolution process of hydraulic fractures accurately. In this paper, a hydro-elasto-plastic model is proposed to investigate the hydraulic fracture propagation in deep reservoirs. The Drucker–Prager plasticity model, Darcy’s law, cubic law and cohesive zone model are employed to describe the plastic deformation, matrix flow, fracture flow and evolution of hydraulic fractures, respectively. Combining the embedded discrete fracture model (EDFM), extended finite element method (XFEM) and finite volume method, a hybrid numerical scheme is presented to carry out simulations. A dual-layer iterative procedure is developed based on the fixed-stress split method, Picard iterative method and Newton–Raphson iterative method. The iterative procedure is used to deal with the coupling between nonlinear deformation with fracture extension and fluid flow. The proposed model is verified against analytical solutions and other numerical simulation results. A series of numerical cases are performed to investigate the influences of rock plasticity, internal friction angle, dilatancy angle and permeability on hydraulic fracture propagation. Finally, the proposed model is extended to simulate multiple hydraulic fracture propagation. The result shows that plastic deformation can enhance the stress-shadowing effect.
