The Scarlet Ibis occurred in large numbers at the coast of Paraná until the nineteenth century, but a drastic decrease in its population ended with regional disappearance. The return of the species to São Paulo coast since the 1980s has been projecting its gradual reestablishment towards the southern Brazil. Here we studied the Scarlet Ibis in a mangrove ecosystem in the Paranaguá Estuarine Complex. Eighteen campaigns were conducted from October 2012 to September 2013, in an area between the bays of Laranjeiras and Pinheiros, totaling 1559 counts. Adult specimens accounted for 91.73 %. The largest group was observed in January and comprised 225 individuals, although groups were more consistently large between April and August (which corresponds to the least rainy season). This study suggests that Scarlet Ibis are recolonizing Paraná and that mangrove ecosystem preservation is extremely important to sustain the increase of Scarlet Ibis population.

Dúvida Abstract: The article takes into account Kierkegaard's reception of how the romantics deal with knowledge and argues that the Danish has something to say about education issues that are today the order of the day. The article also shows how Kierkegaard deals with transdisciplinary themes and to what extent the romantic heritage, in contrast to the enlightened legacy, helps him to conceive his pedagogical and existential reflection. Keywords: Kierkegaard. Electrona risso, a warm circumtropical lanternfish species distributed in all oceans, has been reported in the western Atlantic from Suriname to Southern Brazil. Re-examination of specimens attributed to this species which presumably supported the southernmost record in the western South Atlantic and are available at Museu de Zoologia, Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil, revealed that they were misidentified and are really Electrona paucirastra. As a result, E. paucirastra is reported for the first time in southern Brazil and the distribution of E. risso in the western Atlantic is discussed.

Adults of Pseudopolydora rosebelae sp. nov. inhabit silty tubes on muddy bottoms in shallow water in southern Brazil, states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. They are rare and extremely delicate, attaining 20 mm long for 55 chaetigers. The worms are distinctive by their colourful yellow and black pigmentation on the anterior part of body and palps, prominent transverse hood on the dorsal anterior edge of chaetiger 3, and lack of coloured respiratory pigment in blood. Of 12 examined individuals, all were females. Oogenesis is intraovarian; oocytes develop from chaetigers 14–15 to chaetigers 24–36. Recently laid oocytes were about 150 μm in diameter, with embryos and developing larvae found in capsules inside female tubes in March–June. Broods comprised up to 23 capsules with 400 propagules. Capsules were joined to each other in a string and each attached by a single thin stalk to the inner wall of the tube. Larvae hatched at the 4-chaetiger stage and fed on plankton. Pelagic larvae are unique among Pseudopolydora in having large ramified mid-dorsal melanophores from chaetiger 3 onwards. Competent larvae are able to settle and metamorphose at the 15-chaetiger stage, but can remain planktonic up to 18 chaetigers. They have one pair of unpigmented ocelli and three pairs of black eyes in the prostomium, unpaired ramified mid-dorsal melanophores on chaetiger 1 and on the pygidium, ramified lateral melanophores on chaetigers 5–10, prominent yellow chromatophores in the prostomium, peristomium, on dorsal and ventral sides of chaetigers and in the pygidium. Branchiae are present on chaetigers 7–10, and gastrotrochs are arranged on chaetigers 3, 5, 7 and 12. Provisional serrated bristles are present in all notopodia, and hooks are present in neuropodia from chaetiger 8 onwards. Two pairs of provisional protonephridia are present in chaetigers 1 and 2, and adult metanephridia are present from chaetiger 4.

Tupiperla illiesi fly along the year in the coastal mountains of southeastern Brazil, with larger numbers during the warmer rainy season. In the seasonal tropical climate of Central Brazil and Serra do Cipó, MG, T. oliveirai and T. gracilis, respectively, fly along the year but the pattern is still not known. In the higher elevation (ca. 1600 m a.s.l.) of Campos do Jordão, SP, species of Tupiperla may not fly during the colder months. Seasonal size variation, a phenomenon still little understood, occurred both in tropical and subtropical climates of the states of Goiás and São Paulo.

Occurrence is reported from the region of the city of São Paulo, southern Brazil, of two euglenoid flagellates (Euglenophyceae). These are very rare, and thus very poorly known members of the class: Scytomonas major (Berliner) Lemmermann and Scytomonas pusilla Stein var. sarmatica Drezepolski. Two species - Gyropaigne brasiliensis C. Bicudo & D. Bicudo, sp. nov. and Phacus ephippioiaeus C. Bicudo & D. Bicudo, sp. nov. - are also described as new to science.

The male of Radulphius lane Bonaldo & Buckup, 1995 from São Paulo Atlantic Forest, is described for the first time. Radulphius baiaxaba Bonaldo & Buckup, 1995 from Bahia/Espírito Santo is synonymized with R. laticeps Keyserling, 1891 for southern Brazil. New records of both species are presented.

The aim of this study was to analyze the sedimentation rates of suspended material and to estimate the lifetime of the Cachoeira de Cima reservoir, in Mogi Guaçu municipality, Sao Paulo State. Sedimentation chambers were used to collect samples of suspended material. Sedimentation rates for total suspended material (TSM) ranged between 0.27 and 40.70 mg cm-2 d, for inorganic suspended material (ISM), between 0.05 and 34.19 mg cm-2 d, and organic suspended material (OSM), between 0.18 and 6.52 mg cm-2 d. Sedimentation rates of TMS, IMS and OMS at the Cachoeira de Cima reservoir are higher in the rainy season. The lifetime of the reservoir is estimated at 75 years.
