Microplastics are plastic particles less than 5 mm in diameter. These plastics mostly result from degradation of larger plastics. Due to their small size, they are often accidentally ingested by sea faunas, particularly the deposit and filter feeders. However, information on the ingestion of microplastics by sea fauna such as jellyfish is rare. This paper provides evidence of ingestion of microplastics by jelly fishes (Crambionella orsini) along the Kenyan Coast. Samples were taken from three stations (Mikindani and Makupa in Mombasa, and Dabaso in Mida Creek) between 31st January 2018 and 3rd February 2018 using tow nets. Samples were digested using 10 % KOH at 60 °C for 24 hrs and sieved through a 38 µm sieve. Products below 38 µm were filtered using a 0.8 µm Whatman filters, then dried in an oven and viewed under a dissecting microscope for microplastics. Suspected microplastics were confirmed using a hot needle test. Microplastics obtained were mainly fibres of different colours: black, blue, green, colourless, purple, red and yellow. Colourless fibres were the majority accounting for 53 % of the total number of fibres while purple fibres were the least at only 1 %. Mean concentration of microplastics was highest in Dabaso (0.05 mp/g of tissue), whereas in Mikindani and Makupa were almost equal (i.e., 0.03 ± 0.003 mp/g in Mikindani, and 0.03 ± 0.01 mp/g in Makupa). Statistically, the means were not significantly different between the stations (F1, 2 = 1.34; P = 0.43). This study presents evidence of contamination of the Kenyan coastal waters by microplastics and their ingestion by sea fauna such as jellyfish. Results of this study will help reinforce the plastic ban in the country to prevent further accumulation in the environment.

Red tides and eutrophication have been frequently observed over the past two decades in coastal waters around Hong Kong, which are caused by many factors and one of them is the nutrient from nonpoint source pollution (NSP). This paper concentrates on the nutrients carried by river flow from watersheds. Since there are no systematical data sets of nonpoint source pollution in Hong Kong, monthly river water quality measurements, rainfall and river flow data, land uses, and other related information are used to analyze the characteristics of NSP and estimate the nutrient loads for Hong Kong region. Main achievements are as follows: firstly, besides mean concentration for single land use, the concept of integrated mean concentration for mixed land uses was proposed and applied. Secondly, mean concentrations were carried out for different land uses (agriculture, town, grassland, shrubland and woodland), each Water Control Zone, and Hong Kong region. Thirdly, the annual nutrient loads were estimated, for the first time in this paper, with various methods for the whole area of Hong Kong, and about 8,000 tons of TN and 1,500 tons TP are transported into coastal waters from Hong Kong's land in 1998.

The feeding mechanism of the nudibranch Calma glaucoides (Alder & Hancock) has been described by Evans (1922) and that of the crustacean Nebaliopsis typica (Sars) by Cannon (1931) and myself (1943). Calma is seasonally relatively abundant in the coastal waters of parts of Europe where it is found attached to the eggs of certain fishes. It is known to feed exclusively on these eggs and young embryos. Nebaliopsis is a deep pelagic form from the Antarctic Ocean. It has been obtained only rarely and cannot be observed alive and in its natural environment. Two specimens were available for examination. Thus complete certainty about the diet is impossible. The external features and mouth parts were described by Cannon and the structure of these suggested that Nebaliopsis, like other known Nebaliacea, might be a filter feeder. Examination of the morphology of the gut and its contents indicates that this is very improbable. There is no mechanism for the sorting out of particles of different sizes such as is found in other filter feeders. The food passes into a blind sac and there is no apparent means by which the large quantities of indigestible material taken in when particles are filtered from the water indiscriminately might be evacuated. In addition to this negative evidence the food mass found in the large storage chamber of one specimen was completely homogeneous and structureless, its appearance in section suggesting coagulated yolk. It has therefore been suggested that Nebaliopsis feeds on fish eggs found floating in the deeper water layers.

Gelchromatography column scanning has been used to study the fractions of reduced hydrolyzed 99mTc, 99mTc-pertechnetate and 99mTc-chelate in a 99mTc-glucoheptonate (GH) preparation. A stable high labelling yield of 99mTc-GH complex in the radiopharmaceutical has been obtained with a concentration of 40-50 mg of glucoheptonic acid-calcium salt and not less than 0.45 mg of SnCl2 2 H2O at an optimal pH between 6.5 and 7.0. The stability of the complex has been found significantly affected when sodium hydroxide solution was used for the pH adjustment. However, an alternative procedure for final pH adjustment of the preparation has been investigated providing a stable complex for the usual period of time prior to the injection. The organ distribution and the blood clearance data of 99mTc-GH in rabbits were relatively similar to those reported earlier. The mean concentration of the radiopharmaceutical in both kidneys has been studied in normal subjects for one hour with a scintillation camera and the results were satisfactory.
