Ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), which naturally arises from the decomposition of organic substances through ammonification, has a tremendous influence on local water quality. Therefore, it is vital for water quality protection to assess the amount, sources, and streamflow transport of NH4+-N. SPAtially Referenced Regressions on Watershed attributes (SPARROW), which is a hybrid empirical and mechanistic modeling technique based on a regression approach, can be used to conduct studies of different spatial scales on nutrient streamflow transport. In this paper, the load and delivery of NH4+-N in Poyang Lake Basin (PLB) and Haihe River Basin (HRB) were estimated using SPARROW. In PLB, NH4+-N load streamflow transport originating from point sources and farmland accounted for 41.83% and 32.84%, respectively. In HRB, NH4+-N load streamflow transport originating from residential land and farmland accounted for 40.16% and 36.75%, respectively. Hence, the following measures should be taken: In PLB, it is important to enhance the management of the point sources, such as municipal and industrial wastewater. In HRB, feasible measures include controlling the domestic pollution and reducing the usage of chemical fertilizers. In addition, increasing the vegetation coverage of both basins may be beneficial to their nutrient management. The SPARROW models built for PLB and HRB can serve as references for future uses for different basins with various conditions, extending this model’s scope and adaptability.

The present paper addresses the litho-dynamic and morpho-dynamic processes in the coastal zone of Babie Doły (KM 93.6–93.9), Poland. As a background, the history of coastal engineering measures in this area is described. The impact of post-war structures on the seashore is analysed on the basis of historical maps, supported by results of the sediment transport modelling. Shore regression is caused by the so-called downstream erosion behind the headland with remains of rock palisade structures. The possible consequences for the seashore resulting from the removal of the analysed revetment are discussed. The paper also presents recommendations to the relevant authorities for the future.

This paper reviews existing studies relating to the assessment of sediment concentration profiles within various flow conditions due to their importance in representing pollutant propagation. The effects of sediment particle size, flow depth, and velocity were considered, as well as the eddy viscosity and Rouse number influence on the drag of the particle. It is also widely considered that there is a minimum threshold velocity required to increase sediment concentration within a flow above the washload. The bursting effect has also been investigated within this review, in which it presents the mechanism for sediment to be entrained within the flow at low average velocities. A review of the existing state-of-the-art literature has shown there are many variables to consider, i.e., particle density, flow velocity, and turbulence, when assessing the suspended sediment characteristics within flow; this outcome further evidences the complexity of suspended sediment transport modelling.

Exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is a risk factor for pulmonary and systemic autoimmune diseases, however evidence on which PM2.5 chemical components are more harmful is still scant. Our goal is to investigate potential associations between PM2.5 components and interstitial lung disease (ILD) onset in rheumatoid arthritis (RA).New-onset RA subjects identified from a United States health care insurance database (MarketScan) were followed for new onset of RA associated ILD (RA-ILD) from 2011 to 2018. Annual ambient PM2.5 concentrations of its chemical components (i.e. sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, organic matter, black carbon, mineral dust, and sea salt) were estimated by combining satellite retrievals with chemical transport modelling and refined by geographically weighted regression. Exposures from 2006 up to one year before ILD onset or end of study were assigned to subjects based on their metropolitan division or core-based statistical area codes. A novel time-to-event quantile-based g(generalised)-computation approach was used to estimate potential associations between RA-ILD onset and the exposure mixture of all seven PM2.5 chemical components adjusting for age, sex, and prior chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (as a proxy for smoking).We followed 280 516 new-onset RA patients and detected 2194 RA-ILD cases across 1 394 385 person-years. The adjusted hazard ratio for RA-ILD onset was 1.54 (95% confidence interval 1.47–1.63) per every decile increase in all seven exposures. Ammonium, mineral dust, and black carbon contributed more to ILD risk than the other PM2.5 components.In conclusion, exposure to elements of PM2.5, particularly ammonium, increases ILD risk in RA.

Once petroleum hydrocarbons (PHs) are released into the soil, the interaction between PHs and soil media is dependent not only upon the soil properties but also on the characteristics of PHs. In this study, the key factors influencing the interactions between PHs and soil media are discussed. The key factors include: 1) the characteristics of PHs, such as volatility and viscosity; and 2) soil properties, such as porosity, hydraulic properties and water status, and organic matter; and 3) atmospheric circumstances, such as humidity and temperature. These key factors can be measured either ex-situ using conventional laboratory methods, or in situ using portable or handheld instruments. This study overviews the current ex/in situ techniques for measuring the listed key factors for PH contaminated site assessments. It is a tendency to apply in situ methods for PH contaminated site characterisation. Furthermore, handheld/portable Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) instrument provides tremendous opportunities for in-field PH contaminated site assessment. This study also reviewed the non-destructive FTIR spectroscopy analysis coupling with handheld FTIR for in-field PH contaminated site characterisation, including determining the concentration of total PH, dominant PH fractions and soil key properties for PH transport modelling.

Urban pickup and delivery (PUD) activities are important for logistics operations. Real operations for general freight involve a high degree of complexity due to daily variability. Discrete-event simulation (DES) is a method that can mimic real operations and include stochastic parameters. However, realistic vehicle routing is difficult to build in DES models. The objective is to create a DES model for realistic freight routing, which considers the driver’s routing decisions. Realistic models need to predict the delivery route (including time and distance) for variable consignment address and backhaul pickup. Geographic information systems (GIS) and DES were combined to develop freight PUD models. GIS was used to process geographical data. Two DES models were developed and compared. The first was a simple suburb model, and the second an intersection-based model. Real industrial data were applied including one-year consignment data and global positioning system (GPS) data. A case study of one delivery tour is shown, with results validated with actual GPS data. The DES results were also compared with conventional GIS models. The result shows the intersection-based model is adequate to mimic actual PUD routing. This work provides a method for combining GIS and DES to build freight operation models for urban PUD. This has the potential to help industry logistics practitioners better understand their current operations and experiment with different scenarios.
