Quantifying exchange of particulate matter between coastal and open waters is an important and often unresolved issue. Here, we apply phytoplankton order richness as an innovative marine tracer to identify the geographic position of a coastal exchange zone in the SE North Sea, including its variability in time and space. Previous observations on dynamics of suspended particulate matter accumulation resulted in a hypothesized boundary between coastal waters (including the Wadden Sea) and open North Sea waters, the so-called ‘line-of-no-return’. Our study along two transects (Terschelling, Noordwijk) in the Dutch coastal zone showed seasonality patterns in phytoplankton order richness, both for diatoms and flagellates. The coastal Wadden Sea was found to be clearly different from the open North Sea, implying that seasonality in Wadden Sea phytoplankton is at least partly driven by local environmental conditions. Seasonality in flagellates was found to be more uniform than seasonality in diatoms. Stations in the coastal North Sea to a distance of 10 km (Terschelling) to 20 km (Noordwijk) from the shore appeared to be at the inside of the ‘line-of-no-return’. Our findings indicate that this approach is a useful aid in exploring mixing of particulate matter between coastal and open waters and to study the responses of phytoplankton communities to environmental drivers.

Kata Kunci :Pantai Jeranjang, PLTU, Diatom ABSTRACT Jeranjang coastal waters is a part of Taman Ayu village. The coastal waters of Jeranjang has been an area of liquid waste disposal of the Electric Steam Power Plant Jerajang. The purpose of this research were to know diversity and abundance of diatom (Bacillariophyceae) inthe coastal waters of Jerajang Taman Ayu village Gerung districts west Lombok. Sites and times of sampling were determined by using purposive sampling method. Data of diatom were analyzed for density, diversity, andevenness indexs and percentage important value. Percentage similarity of among stations was determined based on the Bray-Curtis cluster analysis using biodiversity program-version two. The results showed that diatom species of Jeranjang coastal waters consist of 1 class, 2 orders, 17 genus and 26 species. The abundance of diatom community in Jeranjang coastal waters was 786,944individu/liter. Diversity and evenness indexs of diatom species were 1,383 (intermediate status) and 0,424  (lack of dispersal). The highest percentage similarity was on biological parameters and the relationship between biological parameters and environmental parameters for between sample site I and sample site II (78,781% and 80,63%). Based of environmental parameters the percentage similarity of between sample site I and III was of 99.030%. Key words :Jerajang Coastal Water,Electric Steam Power Plant, Diatom

The coolant water discharge area of a thermal power plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu was investigated to elucidate the changes in the coastal water and sediment quality characteristics. Water and sediment samples were collected from three different stations namely station I (about 900 m away from coolant water discharge point), station II (about 1250 m away from discharge point) and station III (about 1600 m away from discharge point) and analysed for the various physico-chemical parameters. The dissolved oxygen level increased with increasing distance from the discharge point i.e., from station I to III, whereas the temperature values showed decreasing trend. Concentration of ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and phosphate were found in the decreasing order from station I, II and III. Accumulation of heavy metals was in the order of Al > Fe > Cu > Zn in the water samples and found slightly higher than the standards prescribed by European countries. The exchangeable phosphorus fraction appeared as the first major contributor among the different fractions of total sedimentary phosphorus. This study clearly explains that the effluent discharge in adjoining coastal waters affects the water and sediment quality.

Phytoplankton in coastal waters are important for the evaluation of either biodiversity or environmental impacts because of this highly vulnerable ecosystem. Seasonal and annual changes in the phytoplankton community structure in Quang Ngai waters during the period 2015 to 2019 were analyzed to assess the phytoplankton diversity and reveal possible causes of these changes. A total of 366 phytoplankton taxa belonging to 10 classes were identified throughout this present study. The highest species number was found in 2019 with 295 taxa, followed by those in 2015 (247), 2017 (185), and 2018 (99). The waters of Ly Son transect showed the highest diversity and most stable phytoplankton communities in both dry and rainy seasons, whereas the stations of Quang Ngai coast revealed high variability of the communities. All diversity indices including Margalef, Pielou, Shannon, Simpson did not reflect well differences in average values but a certain degree of variances, indicating possible environmental impacts. During the study time, there were blooms of certain diatom species including Skeletonema spp. in 2015 and Pseudo-nitzschia spp. in 2019. Analysis of a diatoms index, Centric/Pennate ratio, indicated that the waters were in eutrophic status with a decreasing trend from the coast area to Ly Son island in 2015 and 2019. This research built up fundamental data on phytoplankton communities for Quang Ngai province. The Centric/Pennate diatom index and diversity would be used as indicators for environmental changes and their values provided warning of eutrophication in this coastal waters including the water surrounding Ly Son island.
