In this paper we critique grounded theory’s ability to fulfil its aim of offering a practical vehicle for prediction, change, and control as stipulated in grounded theory’s original formulation by Glaser and Strauss, and later developed by Strauss. We do this through a case study approach, whereby we develop a grounded theory of leisure and cultural strategy within a local authority, and critically reflect on the process of grounded theorisation, together with its implications for generating practical tools in that most practical of academic fields; organisational strategy. We demonstrate that despite generating good grounded theory on leisure and cultural strategy, here termed “navigational translation,” that offers sociological insight, its claim to offer practical tools is inappropriate to the strategy field.

National Examination is one of the indicators of school quality. Therefore, efforts to improve the national exam results are important for schools as part of quality assurance. This study aims to find out the strategy of SMP Al Irsyad Al Islamyyah Purwokerto in improving the results of National Examination. This is a qualitative study with a case study approach. Source of the data are informants and document archives. Data were obtained through interview and documentation and their validity was achieved through triangulation of source. Steps of data analysis were data reduction, data presentation and verification. The results of this study indicate that: (1) The strategy in improving the results of national examination conducted by SMP Al Irsyad has been good enough, covering academic fields (academic matriculation, afternoon tutoring, try out, intensive study guidance, peer tutor and night study) and non-academic field (commitment day, inviting inspirative figures, fun class managers, out bond and prayer together before the National Examination); (2) Optimal implementation of strategies that have been arranged; (3) The obstacles related to improving the national exam results are: students' boredom, students' different characters, and weather conditions.

Kata kunci : Limpasan banjir, modifikasi, re-route saluran dainase ABSTRACT One of the problems in the Balikpapan oil refinery area is flood runoff from residential areas and from the neighborhoods of workers' housing complexes to the refinery area. Flood runoff inundates pipeline installations and refinery operating equipment which can disrupt refinery operations. This study aims to provide an overview of the factors and causes of flood runoff problems in refineries and their improvement methods. This study uses an application research method with a case study approach to handling refinery runoff problems. The results showed that the factors and causes of the Pertamina Balikpapan refinery flood runoff were tool factors, namely the dimensions and configuration of inappropriate drainage channels and the incorporation of water drains from outside the refinery with drains for refineries. The method of repair that is done is by separating the drains from outside the refinery to be made separate from the sewerage from inside the refinery and modifying the existing channel with the appropriate dimensions and channel configurations. The results showed that the method of repair with the separation of channels from outside the refinery and from the refinery proved to be effective and suitable to be used to prevent and control flood runoff in the northern refinery area. The results of this study recommend that the success of this problem handling method can be replicated to overcome similar problems. Keywords: Flood runoff, modification, re-routing of dainase channels

Grounded theory was first introduced more than 50 years ago, but researchers are often still uncertain about how to implement it. This is not surprising, considering that even the two pioneers of this qualitative design, Glaser and Strauss, have different views about its approach, and these are just two of multiple variations found in the literature. While studies using grounded theory in management research are becoming more popular, these are often mixed with the case study approach, or they provide contradictory guidelines on how to use it. The aim of this paper is to provide a clear guide for researchers who wish to use grounded theory in exploratory studies in management research. To support this goal, the methodology’s different terms and variations, as found in the literature, are also discussed. This study can support researchers using this methodology, but it is also useful for reviewers and examiners who wish to understand more about it and the different ways in which researchers have implemented it.
