Since the outbreak of COVID-19, private kindergartens in China have encountered a crisis of survival and development. Whether private kindergartens can successfully overcome difficulties is related to the development goal of preschool education and more children’s enrollment needs could be met in the future. In order to realize the sustainable development of private kindergartens, literature review and interview are adopted in this paper to analyze the practical difficulties faced by private kindergartens during the epidemic. The following suggestions are proposed from the perspective of kindergarten internal management: kindergarten principals should assume the responsibility of management, adopt a variety of ways to reduce the turnover rate of kindergarten teachers, and establish the crisis management system in response to outbreaks.

Learning outcomes This study enables to critically assess: what constitutes the consequences of a financial crisis to a multi-national enterprise operating in the emerging market of Russia; the decision-making processes behind crisis management and the corresponding search for informational grounds to be used as decision justification; and the role of sustainable development in times of crisis. Case overview/synopsis During the 2014–2015 financial crisis in Russia, L’Oréal Russia managed to increase growth by 7%–15%, strengthening its place as the market leader in the country. First, the case illustrates the way Antonio, the General Manager of L’Oréal Russia, had successfully approached this situation by learning from the shortcomings of the company’s strategy during the 2007–2008 crisis and deciding to take a proactive position concerning stakeholders. Then, upon recalling his success story, Antonio suddenly found himself at the dawn of yet another crisis caused simultaneously by the COVID-19 outbreak and oil prices drop. In the face of uncertainty regarding the applicability of prior crisis management strategy for the new economic and social reality of Russia, Antonio was worried about whether the company would be able to achieve the 2020 sustainable development goals of L’Oréal by the end of the year. The case dilemma involves choices Antonio faced during mid-March 2020 about strategy formulation based on an adjustment to the expected consumer behavior patterns and possible need to rethink sustainable development goals priority. Complexity academic level This case is appropriate for an undergraduate or graduate-level program curriculum for courses dedicated to or including topics related to crisis management, doing business in emerging markets, corporate social responsibility and consumer behavior. Before engaging with the case, the students should be aware of basic management- and economics-related concepts and terms, such as strategy, sustainable development, CSR and economic crisis. Supplementary materials Teaching notes are available for educators only. Subject code CSS 11: Strategy.

The global economic system is at the stage of its active formation and development. Its borders and conditions of existence are constantly changing, which is accompanied by crises, which affect the economic systems of all countries participating in the world economy. The current global fnancial crisis, which is global and systemic, revealed a lack of effective theoretical approaches to the development of practical methods for overcoming the crisis phenomena used in the management of integrated agro-formations. This predetermines the need to improve the system of global crisis management that contributes to an adequate response to crises and is based on innovative approaches and the application of modern concepts of sustainable development in order to ensure economic security. The globalization of the fnancial and food markets, on the one hand, allows the agro-holdings to compare and evaluate the effciency of investment simultaneously within the entire international economy; expand and strengthen the fnancing capacity of various economic projects. On the other hand, qualitative changes in the global economy are of a deep and risky nature, due to the rapid development of fnancial innovations, which leads to an insuffcient degree of development of the system of ensuring economic security of international activities of economic entities. As a result of the analysis of the activities of integrated agro-formations, the current trends in the development and functioning of agricultural holdings in the context of the global fnancial crisis have been revealed. The specifcs of ensuring sustainable development of agrostructures in the context of global crisis management are defned: soil-climatic, biological, ecological, technological, and organization of agricultural territories. A model for ensuring the economic security of the agricultural holding through a sustainable development strategy was developed and justifed, including the following elements: a mission, a goal and a system of balanced indicators. The decomposition of the activities of integrated agro-formation into groups of balanced indicators has been made: fnance, customers, internal business processes, training and development, competitors and on-farm decomposition system. The internal and external threats to economic security, which are the basis for the selected groups of the BSS (balanced scorecard system) for integrated agro-formations, are singled out. Fields of economic security of the agro-structure (critical, low, normal and high) are defned, as well as sustainable development strategies for each feld, allowing to move from a critical level of economic security to the high one.
