“Another Way”: Modernist Artists, Media, and the Desire for Spiritual Community

In this thoughtful and literate study, Schwehn argues that Max Weber and several of his contemporaries led higher education astray by stressing research--the making and transmitting of knowledge--at the expense of shaping moral character. Schwehn sees an urgent need for a change in orientation and calls for a "spiritually grounded education in and for thoughtfulness." The reforms he endorses would replace individualistic behavior, the "doing my own work" syndrome derived from the Enlightenment, with a communitarian ethic grounded in Judeo-Christian spirituality. Schwehn critiques philosophies of higher education he considers misguided, from Weber and Henry Adams to Derek Bok, Allan Bloom, and William G. Perry Jr. He draws out valid insights, always showing the theological underpinnings of the so-called secular thinkers. He emphasizes the importance of community, drawing on both the secular communitarian theory of Richard Rorty and that of the Christian theorist Parker Palmer. Finally, he outlines his own prescription for a classroom-centered spiritual community of scholars. Schwehn's study will interest all those concerned with higher education in America today: faculty, students, parents, alumni, administrators, trustees, and foundation officers.

The article is devoted to the vital problem of formation of the Russian civic identity in the conditions of the multi-ethnic and multi-confessional region of the North Caucasus. The Russian identity is viewed as a complicated multilevel social phenomenon that combines several identities namely the ethnic identity, the confessional identity, and the civic identity. Using the data of social surveys the author shows compatibility of ethnic and civic identity in the poly-ethnic society. One of the tools for achieving a balance of identities is historical knowledge. Due to its being the most important form of human self-consciousness, and at the same time being the form of collective memory, history is the key mechanism of identification processes at different stages of personal and social development. Historical knowledge actualized in the institutes of higher education as part of the study of national history lays the foundations of patriotism and civic consciousness. It also forms a tolerant perception of inter-cultural diversity of society in the socio-historical aspect as well as in the ethnic and confessional aspects. The author uses concrete examples to demonstrate the most effective technologies in building the Russian identity in the context of the Russian History Course for the higher educational establishments. The article characterizes the cognitive-emotional basis of the identification process. It emphasizes the importance of forming a positive image of modern Russia as the common home of all peoples who have made a significant contribution to the development of its material and spiritual culture. The author notes that the study of the centuries-old experience of interaction between the peoples of Russia contributes to the strengthening of national consent and spiritual community of Russia’s ethnic groups. Based on the conducted research the author arrives at the conclusion that in the student environment of North Ossetia there are sufficient prerequisites and conditions for shaping an all-Russian civic identity.

In the aggressive dominance of critical rational thinking over the mythical worldview, myth as a historical and effective force does not lose its actuality and importance, because myths often hide deeper messages than what history can offer. In such a social context, the significance of the spiritual message of the Kosovo myth - the commitment to the Heavenly Kingdom, as a lasting common value of the Serbian people, returns as a theme. In spite of its omnipresence, the opinion prevails that the myth belongs to the past, and if it is not yet obsolete, it certainly should be. The authors advocate the idea that myth, as a comprehensive experience of the world, and therefore the Kosovo myth as well, is a factor of national integration, a part of collective identity, and a common value system. Analysing the secular and spiritual understanding of the Kosovo myth, the authors point out the importance of the vivid memory of the prince Lazar?s commitment to the Heavenly Kingdom. For Christians, this represents the value and goal above all others and it forms the core of the Serbian historical consciousness and spiritual community. The paper shows that the spiritual message of the Kosovo myth is not understood or it is misunderstood nowadays, since the commitment to Kosovo is perceived as a call and an obligation to die for it. The authors conclude that the Kosovo myth is not a call to die in the war, on the contrary, it is a struggle for external and internal freedom, as well as for the highest values that are implied by the definition of the Heavenly Kingdom ? peace, love, honour, justice, dignity, and others.

Conflicts of new kind are spreading in Europe, caused by the growing ethnic, cultural, and religious polarization of society. Old tensions between the core population and the immigrants, particularly Muslims, are being exacerbated by growing attempts of local spiritual community leaders to assert Islamic identity of the increasing number of newcomers. The policy of multiculturalism, once acclaimed as a reliable means of integration, draws more criticism. The right-wing radicalism is intensifying. The disenchantment is rising.

Spirituality is important in the lives of patients with serious illnesses. Terminally patients may experience a number of spiritual issues, including lack of meaning, guilt, shame, hopelessness, loss of dignity, loneliness, anger toward God, abandonment by God, feeling out of control, grief, and spiritual suffering. Assessment of a patient’s spiritual beliefs, assessing the importance of spirituality in his or her life, exploring whether he or she belongs to a spiritual community, and offering chaplaincy referral or connection with the patient’s religious or spiritual leaders comprise essential components of a spiritual assessment. Psycho-oncologists should seek both specialized training, as well as referrals to appropriate sources, in order to help patients deal more effectively with the often complicated and painful spiritual issues that arise as a consequence of serious illness. Existential concerns are intrinsic to the human experience of facing mortality in palliative care settings. Patients diagnosed with terminal cancer often confront universal existential issues such as death anxiety, isolation, and meaninglessness. Psycho-oncologists must therefore be familiar with these existential concerns, their manifestations, and approaches to deal with existential issues. Psycho-oncologists have the unique ability to use a variety of psychotherapeutic interventions to alleviate existential distress in palliative care settings including cognitive therapies to help patients and families modify their appraisal of their lives with terminal illness, known as cognitive restructuring, life review techniques to facilitate a constructive reappraisal of life events, dignity-conserving therapies, and meaning-centered therapies have been shown to effectively reduce existential distress in this patient population.
