Viscosity and molar conductance of Bu4NBPh4, Bu4NClO4, [Cu(CH3CN)4]ClO4, NaClO4 and NaBPh4 have been measured in the concentration ranges 0.02 - 0.5 mol dm−3 and 0.0005 - 0.0065 mol dm−3 at 298.15 K in AN + DMF mixtures containing 0, 10, 20, 40, 60, 75, 80, 90, and 100 mol % DMF. The viscosity data have been analyzed by the extended form of the Jones-Dole equation in the form: (η/η0) = 1+AC1/2+BC+DC2 to evaluate B and D parameters and the conductance data by the Shedlovsky equation to evaluate Λo and KA values of the salts. Ionic viscosity B-coefficients (B±) and ionic molar conductances (λ◦ i) have been calculated by using Bu4NBPh4 as a reference electrolyte. Solvated radii (ri) for Na+, Cu+ and ClO4 − have been estimated by using Gill’s modification of Stokes’ law. The variation of B± and ri as a function of mol % DMF shows that both Na+ and Cu+ are highly solvated in AN + DMF mixtures over the entire composition region. The solvation passes through a maximum between 40 to 80 mol % DMF. Both Na+ and Cu+ are more strongly solvated between 40 to 80 mol % DMF. Cu+ is relatively more strongly solvated than Na+ in AN + DMF mixtures. ClO4 − shows poor solvation in AN + DMF mixtures.

Net charges and valence AO's for ammonia, methylamine, dimethylamine, and trimethylamine were calculated using extended basis sets. Superposition effects, evaluated by replacing Pople's standard 6-31G* basis by an extended form in which the basis of the ammonia H atoms and of the methyl groups of trimethylamine are retained in the treatment of each molecule, indicate that the quality of the treatment of amine nitrogen atoms is strongly dependent on the number of methyl groups. A new, augmented basis is proposed for the hydrogens, which appears to be reasonably well balanced: comparison with familiar (e.g., 6-31G*) calculations illustrates in what manner the treatment of nitrogen is worsened when even just one methyl group is replaced by hydrogen unless the impoverishment of the basis is suitably taken care of.

Although it is well-known that excess renin angiotensin system (RAS) activity contributes to the pathophysiology of cardiac and vascular disease, tissue-based expression of RAS genes has given rise to the possibility that intracellularly produced angiotensin II (Ang II) may be a critical contributor to disease processes. An extended form of angiotensin I (Ang I), the dodecapeptide angiotensin-(1–12) [Ang-(1–12)], that generates Ang II directly from chymase, particularly in the human heart, reinforces the possibility that an alternative noncanonical renin independent pathway for Ang II formation may be important in explaining the mechanisms by which the hormone contributes to adverse cardiac and vascular remodeling. This review summarizes the work that has been done in evaluating the functional significance of Ang-(1–12) and how this substrate generated from angiotensinogen by a yet to be identified enzyme enhances knowledge about Ang II pathological actions.

A rocky shore exposure scale, intended primarily for use in the Fensfjord area, Western Norway, has been prepared. This scale is developed from an earlier scale devised by Ballantine for Milford Haven, Wales, making use of species abundance curves along the wave exposure gradient. Independent evidence for the validity of the scale is provided by shell shape variation in Nucella lapillus and by the height of the black lichen zone in the supralittoral fringe. The successive steps in the preparation of the scale are outlined, definitions of the exposure grades are given in tabular form for the restricted set of species analysed numerically and descriptions are provided in an extended form to provide a fuller picture for users of the scale. It is believed that the scale will prove applicable to other rocky shores around the North Sea.

Using polarizable (AMOEBA) and non-polarizable (CHARMM) force fields, we compare the relative free-energy stability of two extreme conformations of the HIV-1 NCp7 nucleocapsid that had been previously experimentally advocated to prevail in solution. Using accelerated sampling techniques, we show that they differ in stability by no more than 0.75-1.9 kcal/mol depending on the reference protein sequence. While the extended form appears to be the most probable structure, both forms should thus coexist in water explaining the differing NMR findings.<br>

Integrins undergo global conformational changes that specify their activation state. Current models portray the inactive receptor in a bent conformation that upon activation converts to a fully extended form in which the integrin subunit leg regions are separated to enable ligand binding and subsequent signaling. To test the applicability of this model in adherent cells, we used a fluorescent resonance energy transfer (FRET)–based approach, in combination with engineered integrin mutants and monoclonal antibody reporters, to image integrin α5β1 conformation. We find that restricting leg separation causes the integrin to adopt a bent conformation that is unable to respond to agonists and mediate cell spreading. By measuring FRET between labeled α5β1 and the cell membrane, we find extended receptors are enriched in focal adhesions compared with adjacent regions of the plasma membrane. These results demonstrate definitely that major quaternary rearrangements of β1-integrin subunits occur in adherent cells and that conversion from a bent to extended form takes place at focal adhesions.

Ephemera, the fleeting images of moments in time, are valuable for the historical perspectives, social insights and visual stimuli they can generate. The means of collecting are various and frequently cheap. Collections can be organised along simple or sophisticated lines depending on individual libraries’ resources.These notes started life as a short paper, presented to audiences at Sydney, Melbourne, and Hobart during a tour of Australia which the author made at the invitation of ARLIS/ANZ in September 1979; in this revised and extended form they were read to an inaugural meeting of an ARLIS North West of England group, at Preston Polytechnic on October 31st 1979.
