The present study aimed to set up a short-term protocol for synchronization of follicular wave emergence in sheep, concomitant with estrus synchronization, which would improve ovarian response in assisted reproductive technologies. Administration of a single GnRH dose, concomitant with the insertion of a progesterone-loaded CIDR device, caused regression of gonadotrophin-dependent follicles ≥4 mm in all the GnRH-treated sheep and in around 80% of the controls treated only with CIDR (p < 0.05). Similar percentages of ewes lost all follicles (around 70%) or only the largest one (around 30%) in both groups. Hence, 54.1% and 70% of the sheep lost all large follicles and initiated a new follicular wave in the control and GnRH groups, respectively (p < 0.05). The remaining sheep showed follicles that were still not dependent of luteinizing hormone (LH). So, in fact, all the sheep had non-dominant follicles after treatment. In conclusion, a treatment including GnRH at CIDR insertion would offer a time- and cost-efficient protocol for inducing follicular turnover and synchronizing a new follicular wave at any stage of the estrous cycle.

Background: UK Government recommendations for dietary fibre intakes have recently increased to 30 g per day, well below current population intakes. Aim: This study aimed to explore whether the target for dietary fibre intake could be achieved and the effects on markers of cardiometabolic health. Methods: In this 4-week high-fibre intervention study, 15 participants were instructed to achieve dietary fibre intakes of 30 g/day. Results: Dietary fibre intakes significantly increased post intervention (16.0 ± 8.1 g/day, p < 0.001). No significant changes in glucose and triglyceride concentrations were observed and there was a significant increase in average body weight (0.7 ± 1.2 kg, p = 0.025). Conclusions: This study shows that achieving the new dietary fibre recommendations of 30g/day is achievable, in the short term, in a sample of British adults without any observed effect on health markers.

Rice is produced in many countries in the world, and this product permits to feed a lot of people, most of them in developing countries. Approximately one tone of rice produces 200 Kg of rice husk, and when this rice husk is burnt 20% of rice husk ash (RHA) is obtained. A very important part of rice husk is abandoned in the field producing environmental problems. RHA can be obtained by controlled combustion, when this fact occurs, a good quality RHA is produced. This RHA can be used as a pozzolanic material in mixtures with lime or Portland cement, producing good mechanical properties and durability. In this work a preliminary results about the influence of RHA/lime ratio on workability and mortars strength was studied. The results showed that mortars workability improves when RHA/lime ratio do. Compressive strength (Cs) of mortars with different RHA/lime ratios was studied, in this sense, for 28 days curing time at 20°C an increase of Cs when RHA/lime ratio do is observed. However for 90 and 180 days curing time a maximum or Cs for RHA/lime equal to 2 is obtained. The lowest and highest Cs values obtained were 6 and 18 MPa respectively, when 20°C curing temperature was used. When curing temperature increases until 65°C similar tendency of Cs respecting RHA/lime ratio was observed. A preliminary study of binders for using in mortars tiles reveals that at least low quantities of Portland cement must be included in binder composition in order to obtain short term strengths that make easy tile demoulding process.

The short-term effectiveness of a two-dose regimen of the BioNTech/Pfizer mRNA BNT162b2 severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccine was widely demonstrated. However, long term effectiveness is still unknown. A nationwide vaccination campaign was initiated early in Israel, allowing for a real-world evaluation of the interaction between protection and time-from-vaccine. The Delta (B.1.617.2) variant became the dominant strain in Israel in June 2021, as Israel is currently experiencing a new surge of cases. Leveraging the centralized computerized database of Maccabi Healthcare Services (MHS), we assessed the correlation between time-from-vaccine and incidence of breakthrough infection. We found that the risk for infection was significantly higher for early vaccinees compared to those vaccinated later. This preliminary finding should prompt further investigagions into long-term protection against different strains, and prospective clinical trials to examine the effect of a booster vaccine against breakthrough infection.
