Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are manifested as a group of signs and symptoms that affect a particular population profile. Some variables such as sex and age influence the clinical expression of this condition. This observational descriptive cross-sectional study aimed to correlate the severity of TMD established by the craniomandibular index (CMI) with the variables: age, sex and electromyographic activity of the masseter and anterior temporal muscles. Fifty-four subjects (15 males/39 females) aged between 16 to 65 years (mean age = 41 years) and diagnosed with TMD were evaluated. Severity was determined by the CMI. These subjects also underwent examination by surface electromyography of the masseter and anterior temporal muscles. No correlation was found between age and severity of TMD (p=0.19/r=0.16), however there was a trend of greater severity in young adults (25-50 years). The sex variable in the correlation was positive with the CMI (p=0.03/r=-0.96) and superior to women. A greater EMG activity of the anterior temporal in relation to masseter (p=0.01) was found and the left temporal activity had the highest average (161.5 ± 44.6 Hz). The electromyographic activity of the anterior temporal and right masseter muscles was positively correlated with the Dysfunction Index CMI (p=0.01). The use of CMI to quantify the severity of TMD and of EMG to assess the functionality of the masticatory muscles can be important allies to direct the treatment.

Objective: This cross-sectional study evaluates the electromyographic (EMG) activity of lips and anterior temporalis muscles of children with competent or incompetent lips. Study design: Forty children were classified clinically according to their lip competence into two groups of 20 each: 1) competent lips group (CLG), and 2) incompetent lips group (ILG). Surface EMG activity of the superior orbicularis oris (SOO), inferior orbicularis oris (IOO), and anterior temporalis (AT) muscles was recorded with the children seated in the upright position during the following tasks: 1) at rest; 2) speaking; 3) swallowing; 4) puffing out the cheeks. Results: ILG showed lower EMG activity than CLG in the SOO and IOO muscles at rest, similar activity in both muscles during speaking, similar activity in the SOO muscle and lower in the IOO during swallowing. ILG showed significantly higher activity than CLG in both muscles while puffing out the cheeks. In the AT muscle, ILG showed lower activity than CLG at rest, during speaking and swallowing, whereas activity was similar while puffing out the cheeks. Conclusion: The difference in EMG activity recorded in children with incompetent lips and with competent lips suggests that the status of their musculature could affect the position and stability of their upper/lower anterior teeth.

Abstract Objective Trigger points (TrPs) are hypersensitive spots within taut bands of skeletal muscles that elicit referred pain and motor changes. Among the variety of techniques used for treating TrPs, dry needling is one of the most commonly applied interventions. The question of eliciting local twitch responses (LTRs) during TrP dry needling is unclear. Our main aim was to investigate the evolution of the electromyographic (EMG) peak activity of each LTR elicited during dry needling into latent TrPs of the gastrocnemius medialis muscle. Methods Twenty asymptomatic subjects with latent TrPs in the gastrocnemius medialis muscle participated in this cross-sectional study. Changes in EMG signal amplitude (root mean square [RMS]) with superficial EMG were assessed five minutes before, during, and five minutes after dry needling. The peak RMS score of each LTR was calculated (every 0.5 sec). Results Analysis of variance revealed a significant effect (F = 29.069, P <0.001) showing a significant decrease of RMS peak amplitude after each subsequent LTR. Differences were significant (P <0.001) during the first three LTRs, and stable until the end of the procedure. No changes (P =0.958) were found for mean RMS data at rest before (mean = 65.2 mv, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 47.3–83.1) and after (61.0 mv, 95% CI = 42.3–79.7) dry needling. Conclusions We found that, in a series of LTRs elicited during the application of dry needling over latent TrPs in the medial gastrocnemius muscle, the RMS peak amplitude of each subsequent LTR decreased as compared with the initial RMS peak amplitude of previous LTRs. No changes in superficial EMG activity at rest were observed after dry needling of latent TrPs of the gastrocnemius medialis muscle.

Abstract Objective: Evidence is contradictory regarding the association between oronasopharyngeal abnormalities and malocclusion. The aim of the present study was to assess the association between oronasopharyngeal abnormalities and malocclusion (anterior open bite and posterior crossbite) in preschoolers. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with a representative sample of 732 preschoolers aged 3-5 years old selected randomly from private and public preschools. Anterior open bite (AOB) and posterior crossbite (PC) were evaluated through a clinical exam. Parents/caregivers answered a questionnaire addressing sociodemographic indicators and oronasopharyngeal issues. Statistical analysis involved descriptive analysis and Poisson regression (p < 0.05). Results: The prevalences of AOB and PC were 21.0% and 11.6%, respectively. Being three years old (PR = 1.244; 95% CI = 1.110-1.394; p < 0.001), being four years old (PR = 1.144; 95% CI = 1.110 - 1.394; p = 0.015), absence of allergy (PR = 1.158; 95% CI = 1.057 - 1.269; p = 0.002), not having undergone nose surgery (PR = 1.152; 95% CI = 1.041 - 1.275; p = 0.006) and having a sore throat more than five times in the same year (PR = 1.118; 95% CI = 1.011 - 1.237; p = 0.030) were significantly associated with AOB. The absence of asthma (PR = 1.082; 95% CI = 1.012 - 1.156; p = 0.020), not having undergone throat surgery (PR = 1.112; 95% CI = 1.068 - 1.158; p < 0.001) and not having undergone nose surgery (PR = 1.114; 95% CI = 1.069 - 1.160; p < 0.001) remained associated with PC. Conclusion: Significant associations were found between oronasopharyngeal-reported abnormalities and the presence of AOB and PC in preschoolers.

Background Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) development in fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is not yet fully understood, but altered neuromuscular control in FMS may play a role in triggering TMD. Objective The purpose of this study was to verify the association between neuromuscular control and chronic facial pain in groups of patients with FMS and TMD. Design A cross-sectional study was conducted. Methods This study involved an analysis of facial pain and electromyographic activity of the masticatory muscles in patients with FMS (n=27) and TMD (n=28). All participants were evaluated according to Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders and surface electromyography (SEMG). Myoelectric signal calculations were performed using the root mean square and median frequency of signals. Results The data revealed premature interruption of masticatory muscle contraction in both patient groups, but a significant correlation also was found between higher median frequency values and increased facial pain. This correlation probably was related to FMS because it was not found in patients with TMD only. Facial pain and increased SEMG activity during mandibular rest also were positively correlated. Limitations Temporal conclusions cannot be drawn from the study. Also, the study lacked a comparison group of patients with FMS without TMD as well as a control group of individuals who were healthy. Conclusions Altered neuromuscular control in masticatory muscles may be correlated with perceived facial pain in patients with FMS.

The aim of this study was to analyze the prevalence and to georeference the malocclusion traits in adolescents in the city of Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil. Data from a previous cross-sectional study with 538 adolescents aged 10 to 14 years were used. In addition, the following variables were used: gender, Health District (HD) of residence, and presence and malocclusion traits. Fisher’s Exact Test, georeferencing, and kernel mapping were used for data evaluation. Malocclusion was observed in 52.4% of individuals, and the most prevalent occlusal trait was deep bite (22.7%), followed by excessive overjet (19.9%), anterior crowding (8.0%), posterior crossbite (6.5%), anterior open bite (4.8%), and anterior crossbite (1.7%). Malocclusion was not associated with gender (p = 0.389) or HD (p = 0.079). However, when stratified by gender, the deep bite prevailed among male. The highest malocclusion trait’s prevalence was observed in the HDs of Cajuru, Pinheirinho, Boa Vista, and Cidade Industrial de Curitiba. Despite the absence of significant differences in relation to gender and HD, the prevalence of malocclusion traits in the sample studied was high, especially for deep bite. Additionally, georeferencing proved to be useful for identifying the distribution of malocclusion in Curitiba.

Abstract A study by Yaruss and Quesal (2002), based on responses from 134 of 239 ASHA accredited graduate programs, indicated that approximately 25% of graduate programs in the United States allow students to earn their degree without having coursework in fluency disorders and 66% of programs allow students to graduate without clinical experience treating people who stutter (PWS). It is not surprising that many clinicians report discomfort in treating PWS. This cross-sectional study compares differences in beliefs about the cause of stuttering between freshman undergraduate students enrolled in an introductory course in communicative disorders and graduate students enrolled and in the final weeks of a graduate course in fluency disorders.
