Image de-noising has been a challenging issue in the field of digital image processing. It involves the manipulation of image data to produce a visually high quality image. While maintaining the desired information in the quality of an image, elimination of noise is an essential task. Various domain applications such as medical science, forensic science, text extraction, optical character recognition, face recognition, face detection etc. deal with noise removal techniques. There exist a variety of noises that may corrupt the images in different ways. Here, we explore filtering techniques viz. Mean filter, Median filter and Wiener filter to remove noises existing in facial images. The noises of our interest are namely; Gaussian noise, Salt & Pepper noise, Poisson noise and Speckle noise in our study. Further, we perform a comparative study based on the parameters such as Mean Square Error (MSE), Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Structure Similarity Index Method (SSIM). For this research work, MATLAB R2013a on Labeled faces in Wild (lfw) database containing 120 facial images is used. Based upon the aforementioned parameters, we have attempted to analyze the performance of noise removal techniques with different types of noises. It has been observed that MSE, PSNR and SSIM for Mean filter are 44.19 with Poisson noise, 35.88 with Poisson noise and 0.197 with Gaussian noise respectively whereas for that of Median filter, these are 44.12 with Poisson noise, 46.56 with Salt & Pepper noise and 0.132 with Gaussian noise respectively. Wiener filter when contaminated with Poisson, Salt & Pepper and Gaussian noise, these parametric values are 44.52, 44.33 and 0.245 respectively. Based on these observations, we claim that the Median filtering technique works the best when contaminated with Poisson noise while the error strategy is dominant. On the other hand, Median filter also works the best with Salt & Pepper noise when Peak Signal to Noise Ratio is important. It is interesting to note that Median filter performs effectively with Gaussian noise using SSIM.

A novel method was brought forward for the purpose of filtering Gaussian noise effectively by using variable step time matrix of the simplified pulse coupled neural network (PCNN). Firstly, the time matrix of PCNN, related to the grayscale and spatial information of an image, is calculated to identify the noise polluted pixels. Subsequently, a variable step, a long step for strong noise and a short step for weak noise, based on the time matrix is applied to modify the grayscale of noised pixels in a sliding window. And then wiener filter is used to the image to further filter the noise. Experiments show that the proposed filter can remove Gaussian noise effectively than other noise reduction methods such as median filter, mean filter, wiener filter etc, and the filtered image is smooth and the details and edges are sharp. Compared with existing PCNN based Gaussian noise filter, the proposed filter gets higher Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) and better performance.

Image denoising, a significant research area in the field of medical image processing, makes an effort to recover the original image from its noise corrupted image. The Pulse Coupled Neural Networks (PCNN) works well against denoising a noisy image. Generally, image denoising techniques are directly applied on the pixels. From the literature review, it is reported that denoising after frequency domain transformation is performing better since noise removal is applied over the coefficients. Motivated by this, in this paper, a new technique called the Static Thresholded Pulse Coupled Neural Network (ST-PCNN) is proposed by combining PCNN with traditional filtering or threshold shrinkage technique in Contourlet Transform domain. Four different existing PCNN architectures, such as Neuromime Structure, Intersecting Cortical Model, Unit-Linking Model and Multichannel Model are considered for comparative analysis. The filters such as Wiener, Median, Average, Gaussian and threshold shrinkage techniques such as Sure Shrink, HeurShrink, Neigh Shrink, BayesShrink are used. For noise removal, a mixture of Speckle and Gaussian noise is considered for a CT skull image. A mixture of Rician and Gaussian noise is considered for MRI brain image. A mixture of Speckle and Salt and Pepper noise is considered for a Mammogram image. The Performance Metrics such as Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR), Structural Similarity Index (SSIM), Image Quality Index (IQI), Universal Image Quality Index (UQI), Image Enhancement Filter (IEF), Structural Content (SC), Correlation Coefficient (CC), and Weighted Signal-to-Noise Ratio (WSNR) and Visual Signal-to-Noise Ratio (VSNR) are used to evaluate the performance of denoising.

Aiming at the problem of unclear images acquired in interactive systems, an improved image processing algorithm for nonlocal mean denoising is proposed. This algorithm combines the adaptive median filter algorithm with the traditional nonlocal mean algorithm, first adjusts the image window adaptively, selects the corresponding pixel weight, and then denoises the image, which can have a good filtering effect on the mixed noise. The experimental results show that, compared with the traditional nonlocal mean algorithm, the algorithm proposed in this paper has better results in the visual quality and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of complex noise images.

This paper presents a comparative study on six despeckling methods such as modified hybrid median filter, gabor filter, speckle reducing anisotropic diffusion, homomorphic filter, non-local mean filter and squeeze box filter. We select eight objective evaluation parameters, such as signal-to-ratio, contrast signal–to–noise ratio, figure of merit, least absolute error, peak signal-to-noise ratio, edge protection factor, quantitative parameters of despeckling, signal-to-minimum mean square error ratio, to quantify the performance of these filters. The comparative study will provide a good guidance for selecting a suitable filter in the ultrasound image processing.

Abstract A Bayesian approach using wavelet coefficient modeling is proposed for de-noising additive white Gaussian noise in medical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In a parallel acquisition process, the magnetic resonance image is affected by white Gaussian noise, which is additive in nature. A normal inverse Gaussian probability distribution function is taken for modeling the wavelet coefficients. A Bayesian approach is implemented for filtering the noisy wavelet coefficients. The maximum likelihood estimator and median absolute deviation estimator are used to find the signal parameters, signal variances, and noise variances of the distribution. The minimum mean square error estimator is used for estimating the true wavelet coefficients. The proposed method is simulated on MRI. Performance and image quality parameters show that the proposed method has the capability to reduce the noise more effectively than other state-of-the-art methods. The proposed method provides 8.83%, 2.02%, 6.61%, and 30.74% improvement in peak signal-to-noise ratio, structure similarity index, Pratt’s figure of merit, and Bhattacharyya coefficient, respectively, over existing well-accepted methods. The effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated by using the mean squared difference (MSD) parameter. MSD shows the degree of dissimilarity and is 0.000324 for the proposed method, which is less than that of the other existing methods and proves the effectiveness of the proposed method. Experimental results show that the proposed method is capable of achieving better signal-to-noise ratio performance than other tested de-noising methods.

Noise removal techniques have become an essential practice in medical imaging application for the study of anatomical structure and image processing of MRI medical images. To report these issues many de-noising algorithm has been developed like Weiner filter, Gaussian filter, median filter etc. In this research work is done with only three of the above filters which are already mentioned were successfully used in medical imaging. The most commonly affected noises in medical MRI image are Salt and Pepper, Speckle, Gaussian and Poisson noise. The medical images taken for comparison include MRI images, in gray scale and RGB. The performances of these algorithms are examined for various noise types which are salt-and-pepper, Poisson, speckle, blurred and Gaussian Noise. The evaluation of these algorithms is done by the measures of the image file size, histogram and clarity scale of the images. The median filter performs better for removing salt-and-pepper noise and Poisson Noise for images in gray scale, and Weiner filter performs better for removing Speckle and Gaussian Noise and Gaussian filter for the Blurred Noise as suggested in the experimental results.

An image denoising method based on spatial filtering is proposed on order to overcoming the shortcomings of traditional denoising methods in this paper. The method combined mean mask algorithm with median filtering technique is able to replace the gray values of noisy image pixel by the mean or median value in its neighborhood mask matrix and highlight the characteristic value of the image. Peak signal to noise ratio and mean square error are used as the evaluation index in this method and comparison between mean filter and median filter is done. The experimental results show that this denoising system makes the images have a high signal to noise ratio and integrity of edge details and take into account real-time, and fast response characteristic of the system.
