Abstract. This paper attempts to explain the theoretical reasons why the local farmers took irrational activities such as steep slope land cultivations in order to reveal the mechanism of Karst Rocky Desertification (KRD) through those typical case studies. Firstly, this paper assumes that the low land capacity is the genesis cause of KRD in peak cluster-depression areas. Furthermore, the ecological quality of the peak cluster-depression zone is influenced by the relationship between the area of depressions and the population of residential areas. The results show that, six typical peak cluster-depression areas in Guizhou Province were selected to compare the distribution circumstances of croplands, the characteristics of settlements and the formation of KRD. Also, the results show that there is a negative correlation between the percentage of the cultivated land and the percentage of KRD (including light KRD, moderate KRD and severe KRD at peak cluster-depressions. The relationship could be concluded as three situations of the process of KRD, which are low, middle and upper carrying capacity of land. The severe KRD is only distributed in peak-cluster depression areas with less flatland, low land capacity and high population. The harmonization between population pressure and bearing capacity of land will influence the ecological qualities in the peak cluster depressions. Therefore, the hypothesis suggested by this paper is correct, and this result will contribute to understanding the natural mechanism of KRD and guide the ecological restoration of KRD land.

Firstly, this paper assumes that the low land capacity is the initial cause of KRD in peak-cluster depression areas. Furthermore, the ecological quality of the peak-cluster depression zone (a combination of clustered karst cones with a common base and depressions between cones) is influenced by the relationship between the area of depressions and the population of residential areas. This paper reports the results of an empirical analysis of the relationship between income and the rate of deforestation of tropical natural forests. The inverted U-shaped relationship known as the environmental Kuznets curve is confirmed. The study focuses on the role of institutions and macroeconomic policy in the deforestation process. Results indicate that the quality of governance is an important determinant of forest resource preservation, and that rural population pressure is not as important as suggested by other studies. Agricultural technology improvement and enhanced educational attainment also lead to reductions of deforestation rates.

PurposeResidential satisfaction can be viewed as a part of life satisfaction. There are many studies related to the relationship between residents’ satisfaction with their environments and the quality of those environments. The purpose of this paper is to examine how this satisfaction differs according to the type of residential environment.Design/methodology/approachIt is based on empirical data on the quality of life in the different residential environments of the Istanbul Metropolitan Area. The primary source of information was a household survey.FindingsIn an attempt to find solutions to problems with the quality of residential environments, the data were analyzed through several variables related to the subjective perceptions of residential satisfaction. According to the results of the research, residents living in planned neighborhoods in the city are more satisfied than those living in unplanned neighborhoods. The residents who live in the planned sections of the city are satisfied with the attractiveness and accessibility of their neighborhoods, while those who live in unplanned sections of the city are satisfied with their level of attachment to their neighborhoods.Practical implicationsThe study was designed to produce baseline data so that future changes in residential conditions as perceived by the residents of Istanbul could be monitored to support decisions for residential areas.Originality/valueComparative case studies, especially on planned vs unplanned environments, are relatively limited in number. Therefore, there is a need for new researches examining differences between different residential settings within cities. This study adds value to the field of comparative studies on residential environments.

AbstractIn karst rocky desertification areas, bryophytes coexist with algae, bacteria, and fungi on exposed calcareous rocks to form a bryophyte crust, which plays an irreplaceable role in the restoration of karst degraded ecosystems. We investigated the biodiversity of crust bryophytes in karst rocky desertification areas from Guizhou Province, China. A total of 145 species in 22 families and 56 genera were identified. According to frequency and coverage, seven candidate dominant mosses were screened out, and five drought-resistant indexes of them were measured. Hypnum leptothallum, Racopilum cuspidigerum, and Hyophila involuta have high drought adaptability. We explored the interactions between two dominant mosses (H. leptothallum, H. involuta) and the structure of microbial communities in three karst rocky desertification types. Microbial diversity and function analysis showed that both moss species and karst rocky desertification types affect microbial communities. Moss species much more strongly affected the diversity and changed the community composition of these microbial groups. Bacteria were more sensitive in the microbiome as their communities changed strongly between mosses and drought resistance factors. Moreover, several species of fungi and bacteria could be significantly associated with three drought-resistant indexes: Pro (free proline content), SOD (superoxide dismutase activity), and POD (peroxidase activity), which were closely related to the drought adaptability of mosses. Our results enforced the potential role of moss-associated microbes that are important components involved in the related biological processes when bryophytes adapted to arid habitats, or as one kind of promoters in the distribution pattern of early mosses succession in karst rocky desertification areas.

Abstrak: Tumpukan sampah dan lindi secara langsung dan tidak langsung dapat menganggu kesehatan lingkungan dan keseimbangan ekosistem perairan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji  kualitas fisik, kimia dan biologi air sumur pada berbagai jarak dari Tempat Pembuangan Akhir (TPA) kecamatanAlak serta dampaknya bagi kesehatan penduduk.Penelitian  menggunakan metode stratified random sampling yaitu penentuan berdasarkan jarak 400m-1200m dari timbunan sampah dari lokasi pengambilan sampel air sumur. Hasil analisa  sampel  menentukan kualitas air dengan membandingkanbaku mutu Air. Analisis pengaruh jarak TPA terhadap kualitas air selanjutnya dihitung nilai determinasi (r2) untukmenentukan hubungan jarakTPA terhadap kualitas air. Untuk menduga hubungan  dilakukan dengan analisis regresi dan korelasi antara tumpukan sampah, air lindidan kualitas air tanah. Hasil Kualitas air sumur di kecamatan Alak berada pada kategori sesuai artinya sesuai dengan Permenkes No. 492/Menkes/Per/IV/2010 tanggal 19 April 2010. Variabel jarak keberadaan tempat pembuangan akhir berpengaruh terhadap kualitas air sumur. Parameter kualitas air yang diambil dari daerah pemukiman di kelurahanAlakpadajarak 800 m dan 1.200 m masih dalam batasaman dikonsumsi. Sedangkan pada jarak 400 m dibutuhkan perhatian pemerintah untuk pengelolaan TPA secarabaik agar tidak berdampak pada kesehatan masyarakat.Kata kunci: Tempat Pembuangan Akhir, jarak TPA, kualitas airAbstract: Piles of garbage and leachate directly and indirectly can disturb the health of the environment and the balance of the aquatic ecosystem.This study aims to assess the physical, chemical and biological quality of well water at various distances from the Final Disposal Landfill and its impact on the health of the population. The study uses a stratified random sampling method that is based on the distance of 400 m-1200 m from the landfill from the location of groundwater well sampling.The results of sample analysis determine water quality by comparing Water quality standards. Analysis of the effect of landfill distance on water quality then calculated determination value (r2) determines the relationship between landfill distance to water quality.To estimate the relationship is done by regression analysis and correlation between the garbage heap and leachate and ground water quality. Results The quality of well water in Alak sub-district is in the appropriate category according to the meaning of Permenkes No. 492 / Menkes / Per / IV / 2010 April 19, 2010. Variable distance of the existence of the final disposal site affects the quality of well water. Water quality parameters taken from residential areas in Alak village at a distance of 800 m and 1,200 m are still within the safe limits for consumption. Meanwhile, at a distance of 400 m, government attention is needed to properly manage the landfill so it does not have an impact on public health.Keywords: Landfills, Landfill distance, Water quality
