Optical spectra were investigated in a spectral range of (300 - 700) nm for CuAlS2 single crystals. Transmission and wavelength modulated transmission spectra demonstrated presence of some impurity absorption bands in the region of optical transparency of crystals. Optical functions (real and imaginary components of the dielectric function, refractive index and extinction coefficient) have been calculated from the optical reflection spectra by means of the Kramers-Kronig relations. A strong anisotropy and birefringence have been revealed for CuAlS2 crystals. Two isotropic points have been found in (100) oriented platelets around 380 nm and 530 nm. The position of the isotropic point around 530 nm was found to be strongly influenced by the technological conditions of crystal growth and platelet thickness, it being situated at 535 nm for a platelet with thickness of 223 µm. An optical band-pass filter was constructed with such a platelet placed between two Gran-Thompson prism crossed polarizers.

According to the requirement of the filter for laser tracking system, we chose Ta as the target material of high refractive index and SiO2 as the target material of low refractive index, the film system was designed and optimized with the TFCalc software, adopted the double ion sputter coaters by VEECO company for plating system, using two sides of the substrate to broaden the long and short wavelength cut-off band respectively, we improved the peak transmittance and simplified the difficulty of experimental analysis, the filter to meet the demand has been deposited. The average transmittance of the filter at 532nm, 808nm, 1064nm and1550nm wavelength was less than 0.2% and the peak transmittance at 905nm wavelength was 96.3%. The filter can withstand the test of bad environment and satisfy the requirements of the laser tracking system.

The 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquake (MJ 8.0) occurred off the southeastern coast of Tokachi, Japan, and generated a large tsunami which arrived at Tokachi Harbor at 04:56 with a wave height of 4.3 m. Japan Marine Science and Technology Center (JAMSTEC) recovered records of water pressure and sea-bed acceleration at the bottom of the tsunami source region. These records are first introduced with some findings from Fourier analysis and band-pass filter analysis. Water pressure disturbance lasted for over 30 minutes and the duration was longer than those of accelerations. Predominant periods of the pressure looked like those excited by Rayleigh waves. Next, numerical simulation was conducted using the dynamic tsunami simulation technique able to represent generation and propagation of Rayleigh wave and tsunami, with a satisfactory result showing validity and usefulness of this technique.
