Background: Gastric İntestinal Metaplasia (GIM) and Gastric Atrophy (GA) are pre-neoplastic lesions that can lead to gastric cancer. Nowadays, there are no recognized good biomarkers of GIM and GA. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is an economical, effective, and repetitive indicator of inflammation. We aimed to comparatively evaluate Red Cell Distribution Width (RDW) and the NLR. Methods: 88 patients with GIM and 48 patients with GA and 64 patients with non-atrophic-non-metaplastic gastritis were included in the study. NLR and RDW levels were measured in patients and controls. Results: NLR levels were significantly higher in patients with GIM than in controls (p < 0.05). NLR level was correlated positively with presence of GIM (p < 0.05), H.pylori presence in GIM and GA (p < 0.05), and menopause (p < 0.05). A multiple logistic regression analysis showed the GIM was predictor for elevated NLR (p < 0.05). According to the ROC curve analysis, the best cut-off NLR value to differentiate between patients with GIM from GA and/or controls was >2.92 (p < 0.05). In this study, we mainly found a significant association between GIM and NLR. Conclusions: NLR is significantly higher in patients with GIM. NLR can be an independent determinant factor for GIM. Background: Neutrophils, monocytes, and macrophages activations are associated with a gout attack. Monocyte to lymphocyte ratio (MLR), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), red cell distribution width (RDW), and mean platelet volume (MPV) are well-known inflammation markers. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether they could be a predictive marker to the gout attack. Material and Methods: A hundred and ten gout patients (male/female, 86/24) and 90 (male/female, 64/26) age-, gender-, and body mass index-matched volunteer controls were included in the study. Blood samples were obtained in the intercritical and attack period of the patients. Hemogram, serum uric acid (SUA), C-reactive protein (CRP), and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) values were studied. Results: In the attack period NLR (p < 0.001), PLR (p < 0.05), MLR (p < 0.001), RDW (p < 0.05), MPV (p < 0.05), ESR (p < 0.001), CRP (p < 0.001) and SUA (p < 0.001) values were significantly higher than intercritical period values. According to the results of regression analysis; There was an independent strong relationship between the gout attack and SUA, (Beta [β] = 0.352, p < 0.001), ESR (β = 0.329, p < 0.001), CRP (β = 0.286, p < 0.001), MLR (β = 0.126, p < 0.001), RDW (β = 0.100, p = 0.003) and NLR (β = 0.082, p = 0.014). Conclusions: MLR, RDW, and NLR may be a strong predictive marker for a gout attack. MPV and PLR values in the gout attack may be associated with systemic inflammation.

<strong>Background:</strong> Increased blood flow may trigger pulmonary arterial wall inflammation, which may influence progression of pulmonary artery hypertension in patients with congenital heart disease. In this study, we aimed to investigate the correlation between preoperative inflammation markers and pulmonary arterial hypertension. <br /><strong>Methods:</strong> A total of 201 patients with pulmonary hypertension were enrolled in this study retrospectively; they had undergone open heart surgery between January 2012 and December 2013. Patients’ preoperative C-reactive protein (CRP), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, red blood cell distribution width, pulmonary pressures, and postoperative outcomes were evaluated.<br /><strong>Results:</strong> Patient age, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, red blood cell distribution width, and CRP were found to be significantly correlated with both preoperative peak and mean pulmonary artery pressures. These data were entered into a linear logistic regression analysis. Patient age, neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, and CRP were found to be independently correlated with peak pulmonary pressure (P &lt; .001, P &lt; .001, and P = .004) and mean pulmonary artery pressure (P &lt; .001, P &lt; .001, and P = .001), whereas preoperative mean pulmonary artery pressure was found to be independently correlated with intensive care unit stay (P &lt; .001). No parameter was found to be significantly correlated with extubation time and mortality. Eighteen patients had experienced pulmonary hypertensive crisis; in this subgroup, patients’ mean pulmonary artery pressure and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio were found to be significant (P = .047, P = .003). <br /><strong>Conclusion:</strong> Preoperative inflammation markers may be correlated with the progression of pulmonary hypertensive disease, but further studies with larger sample size are needed to determine the predictive role of these markers for postoperative outcomes.<br /><br />

Background: Frailty syndrome is characterized by multisystem dysregulation frequently found in older individuals or even in younger patients with chronic disabling diseases such as cardiovascular diseases. Objective: To determine whether peripheral blood cell count, and its subpopulations, red blood cell and platelets, morphology and different ratios (neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio and red blood distribution width-to-platelet ratio) are associated with cardiac frail patients, and through this to improve the prediction of frailty status in patients with cardiovascular diseases. Methods: An observational, retrospective, cohort study enrolling 179 patients with cardiovascular disease divided into two groups: non-frail group (100 pts) and frail group (79 pts), a cohort detached from the Frail.RO study. The frailty was evaluated based on the Fried criteria; haematological markers, sociodemographic data, and variables related to cardiovascular diseases and comorbidities were also recorded. Results: Lower lymphocytes, platelet count, and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio were significantly associated with a more severe frailty syndrome. Regarding red blood cells, haemoglobin concentration and red cell distribution width significantly correlated with the severity of the frailty syndrome. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis for these markers associated with the frailty syndrome revealed an acceptable sensitivity of 66 % and specificity of 65% to identify frail individuals. Malnutrition and hypercholesterolemia are relevant predictors for identifying frailty in hospitalized cardiovascular patients. Conclusion: The evaluation of peripheral blood cell composition routinely measured in clinical practice can represent a valuable, but limited indicator, to diagnose frailty syndrome and eventually, the effects of interventions in frail patients with cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract BackgroundThis study aimed to explore the association between the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and early growth of traumatic intraparenchymal haemorrhage (tICH) in patients with traumatic brain injury.MethodsA multicentre, observational cohort study was conducted at four hospitals and included patients with cerebral contusion undergoing baseline computed tomography (CT) for haematoma volume analysis within 6 hours after primary injury and who had follow-up visits within 48 hours. Routine blood tests were performed upon admission and analysed with early PIH. Logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to explore the predictive value of the NLR for haematoma expansion. ResultsThe final analysis included 1003 patients in the retrospective development and validation cohorts. In the retrospective development cohort, the NLR were higher in the PIH group than in the non-PIH group (P<0.0001). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that a higher NLR was independently associated with PIH (P<0.0001). ROC curve analysis showed that the NLR had a sensitive ability for predicting PIH (AUC, 0.91 [95% CI, 0.88-0.94]). In the validation study, the NLR had a similar ability to predict PIH. ConclusionThe NLR can be used to easily assess the growth of tICH and calculated using routine laboratory tests. A high NLR is independently predictive of early growth of tICH and may aid in risk stratification of patients with tICH on admission.
