Background: Frailty syndrome is characterized by multisystem dysregulation frequently found in older individuals or even in younger patients with chronic disabling diseases such as cardiovascular diseases. Objective: To determine whether peripheral blood cell count, and its subpopulations, red blood cell and platelets, morphology and different ratios (neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio and red blood distribution width-to-platelet ratio) are associated with cardiac frail patients, and through this to improve the prediction of frailty status in patients with cardiovascular diseases. Methods: An observational, retrospective, cohort study enrolling 179 patients with cardiovascular disease divided into two groups: non-frail group (100 pts) and frail group (79 pts), a cohort detached from the Frail.RO study. The frailty was evaluated based on the Fried criteria; haematological markers, sociodemographic data, and variables related to cardiovascular diseases and comorbidities were also recorded. Results: Lower lymphocytes, platelet count, and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio were significantly associated with a more severe frailty syndrome. Regarding red blood cells, haemoglobin concentration and red cell distribution width significantly correlated with the severity of the frailty syndrome. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis for these markers associated with the frailty syndrome revealed an acceptable sensitivity of 66 % and specificity of 65% to identify frail individuals. Malnutrition and hypercholesterolemia are relevant predictors for identifying frailty in hospitalized cardiovascular patients. Conclusion: The evaluation of peripheral blood cell composition routinely measured in clinical practice can represent a valuable, but limited indicator, to diagnose frailty syndrome and eventually, the effects of interventions in frail patients with cardiovascular diseases.

Major advances in coronary interventional techniques and pharmacotherapy as well as the use of drug-eluting stents (DESs) have considerably reduced the risk of in-stent restenosis (ISR). However, ISR remains a major clinical challenge. Inflammation and platelet activation are important processes that underlie the pathophysiology of ISR. Parameters related to blood cells, entailing both cell count and morphology, are useful markers of the inflammatory response and platelet activation in clinical practice. Recent studies have highlighted several new combined or derived parameters related to blood cells that independently predict ISR after DES implantation. The neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio, an inflammatory marker, is regarded as a predictor of the risk of ISR and the stability of atherosclerotic plaques. The mean platelet volume, a widely used platelet activation parameter, has been shown to be a predictor of the risk of ISR and the efficacy of antiplatelet therapy. Other markers considered include the platelet/lymphocyte ratio, red blood cell distribution width, and platelet distribution width. This review provides an overview of these parameters that may help stratify the risk of coronary angiographic and clinical outcomes related to ISR.

Abstract 1. Adequate chromosome preparations were obtained in 70 per cent of normal rat peripheral blood cell cultures. However, cultures of peripheral blood cells from leukemic rats were almost universally unsuccessful. 2. In x-ray- and 3MCA-induced leukemias direct bone marrow preparations provided adequate metaphases in eight of 12 cases. Failures were attributed in four cases to scanty material obtained from fibrotic marrows. 3. No consistent chromosome abnormalities, such as those reported in human myelogenous leukemia, were found in these leukemic rats. However, the series of cases is small, and species differences and other factors may have influenced the results of these studies.

Background: To determine the predictive value of peripheral blood cell parameters for refractory Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (RMPP) in children over 6 years old.Methods: A retrospective study was conducted in children with RMPP admitted to the respiratory department of Tianjin Children's Hospital from September 2017 to September 2019, and non-refractory Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia (NRMPP) was selected by the propensity score method and matched according to the ratio of 1:1.5. We analyzed the differences in clinical characteristics, peripheral blood cell parameters, imaging findings, and treatments between the two groups, and further determined the predictive value of peripheral blood cell parameters on RMPP.Results: There were 76 patients in the RMPP group and 114 patients in the NRMPP group. We found that the RMPP group has a longer clinical course and a higher incidence of intrapulmonary and extrapulmonary complications (p < 0.01). Moreover, the proportion of children in the RMPP group who received immunotherapy (such as glucocorticoid, gamma immunoglobulin) and fiberoptic bronchoscopy intervention was higher than that in the NRMPP group (p < 0.01). Meanwhile, the level of neutrophil, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet count/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), mean platelet volume/lymphocyte ratio (MPVLR), C-reactive protein (CRP), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), and interleukin (IL)-6 in the RMPP group was significantly higher (p < 0.01) than those in the NRMPP group. The incidence of pulmonary consolidation, atelectasis, and pleural effusion was also higher in the RMPP group (p < 0.05). ROC curve and binary logistic regression analysis showed that NLR > 3.92 (OR = 3.243; 95% CI = 1.485–7.081; p = 0.003), MPVLR > 5.29 (OR = 2.700; 95% CI = 1.258–5.795; p = 0.011), and pleural effusion (OR = 3.023; 95% CI = 1.424–6.420; p = 0.004) were significant factors in predicting RMPP. Our study showed that NLR had higher accuracy in predicting RMPP than CRP.Conclusions: The parameters of peripheral blood cells might be a predictor of RMPP. NLR > 3.92, MPVLR > 5.29, and pleural effusion might have important predictive value for RMPP in children over 6 years old.

Abstract Background: The clinical significance of hemoglobin-to-red blood cell distribution width (Hb/RDW) for the diagnosis of nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) has not been reported yet. This study aimed to evaluate the value of preoperative Hb/RDW, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) for the diagnosis of NPC.Methods: A total of 180 NPC patients (NPC group) and 149 healthy subjects (control group) were recruited to assess the value of Hb/RDW, NLR, and PLR for the diagnosis of NPC. Results: It was noted that NLR and PLR were significantly higher in the NPC group than those in the control group (P<0.001), however, Hb/RDW was lower in the NPC group compared with that in the control group (P<0.001). NLR was also remarkably different between patients of stageⅠ+Ⅱ and those of stage Ⅲ+Ⅳ (P=0.043), and that was different in patients with lymph node metastases or not(P=0.030). Besides, PLR was significantly different in patients with serosal invasion or not (P=0.031).Compared with Hb/RDW alone (sensitivity, 66.67%; specificity, 85.23%), the sensitivity (67.78%, 72.78%) and specificity (89.62%, 90.6%) of Hb/RDW with NLR and PLR were both increased. Furthermore, Hb/RDW combined with NLR (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) (AUC), 0.824; 95% confidence interval (CI):0.779-0.864, P=0.0080) or PLR (AUC:0.851, 95%CI:0.808-0.888, P=0.0002) had a greater AUC value for the diagnosis of NPC compared with Hb/RDW alone (AUC: 0.781, 95% CI: 0.732-0.824).Conclusion: Hb/RDW can be used as a valuable indicator for the diagnosis of NPC. Preoperative Hb/RDW combined with NLR or PLR had higher value for the diagnosis of NPC.

The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic values of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and red blood cell distribution width in diabetic foot ulcers treatment. A total of 250 adult patients who were treated in our clinic between 2007 and 2018 for diabetic foot ulcers were evaluated retrospectively. Diabetic foot ulcers were divided into 4 groups: major amputation, minor amputation, chronic wound, and complete healing. The mean age of our study groups was 60 years (range = 55-65 years). The mean follow-up period was 28 ± 4.3 months. Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and red blood cell distribution width cutoff values were determined as 4.3 and 12.1, respectively, for patients in complete recovery group (C sig. = .995 and .871, respectively; P < .05). Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and red blood cell distribution width cutoff values for patients in the major amputation group were 6.73 and 13.4 (C sig. = .864 and .951, respectively; P < .05), respectively. According to the χ2 comparison of the groups, major amputation was seen in patients with neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio >6.3, and complete recovery was seen in patients with neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio <4.3. In patients with red blood cell distribution width >13.4, major amputation was found to be significant ( P < .05). According to these results, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and red blood cell distribution width are inexpensive and easy to access predictive parameters in the diagnosis and follow-up of diabetic foot ulcers.
