The Role of Inquiry-Based Learning in Entrepreneurship Education

This paper introduces a course design that used history and inquiry-based learning to develop science students' understanding of invention, innovation and commercialization processes. First, it explains inquiry-based learning and then introduces a sample course design, explaining the rationale, structure and process. Following on from this introduction, a student case study on the development of Taxol is used to show how inquiry-based learning can enhance science students' understanding of entrepreneurial processes. The case study provides an illustration of the forms of knowledge gained through the use of inquiry-based learning. The paper concludes by highlighting the benefits and challenges of this type of course for the students and pointing out how such a course can provide a different approach for entrepreneurship education targeted at science and engineering students.

ABSTRACTThere is a need to expand the fundamental skills in science and engineering to include innovation & entrepreneurship (I&E) skills as core competencies. To better prepare the future Nanotechnology workforce, the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez Nanotechnology Center, broadened the educational content beyond traditional skills in science and engineering. The Center, offers a rich educational program for materials and nano scientists that aims to create the next generation of knowledgeable, experienced professionals, and successful entrepreneurs, who can develop value-added innovations that can spur economic growth and continue to impact the quality of life for society. Within the educational program an Entrepreneurship Education Co-Curricular Program (EEP) incorporates I&E training into the Materials Science, Nanotechnology, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) faculty and student experiences. The EEP consists of a two-year series of workshops that seek to develop an entrepreneurial mindset, including five key topics: 1) Generation of Ideas, 2) Entrepreneurial Vision, 3) Early Assessment of Ideas, 4) Identification of Opportunities, and 5) Strategic Thinking. The EEP goals, target audience, and implementation strategy, is described with an evaluation tool to assess the program’s success in developing an entrepreneurial mindset.

A new learning opportunity among civil engineering students is learning about urbanization in cities, which combines the sub-disciplines of civil engineering in a seamlessly interdisciplinary manner.  One of the greatest benefits of learning about a global phenomenon such as urbanization is introducing the opportunities to offer examples of the technological, cultural and social diversity surrounding the evolution of urban design, technologies and sustainable strategies from global cities. The ability to have a globally diverse classroom to bring in these perspectives and create a learning experience that captures this information sharing and exchange can be created through course design, learning activities, and assessments, hence the “global classroom.”  The authors present a case study of the global classroom for the online course “Sustainable Cities: Adding an African Perspective” and share their perspective on learner-driven formats that support the global classroom, which hinges upon students’ own interest and commitment to an online learning format.

The entrepreneurial intentions of Chinese students have received rapidly evolving attention, with the “mass entrepreneurship and innovation” program as a driving force, which encourages individuals to start their own business. Entrepreneurial intention, which is perceived as being a predictor of entrepreneurial behavior, has generally been explored in the existing literature on the basis of the theory of planned behavior and the intention–behavior model. Since intention is a psychological notion, it is important to investigate the motivation for developing entrepreneurial intention from a subjective perspective. The aim of this study is to identify the objective factors that determine Chinese science and engineering students’ entrepreneurial intentions, and to understand how these different factors affect their intention to become an entrepreneur. Q methodology, which is a technological combination of qualitative and quantitative research, was conducted using thirty Chinese science and engineering students, and this paper reports their individual attitudes and discourses concerning their entrepreneurial intentions. After compiling 32 Q sets of statements and performing factor analysis, three distinct types of entrepreneurs were revealed. The findings suggest that a subjective approach to entrepreneurship education should be taken to enhance science and engineering students’ entrepreneurial intentions. Some theoretical and practical implications of these findings for techno-entrepreneurship education and development are also discussed.

The study of the organizations and manager work is relevant today, while requiring continuous improvement and understanding. However, there are few studies on the organizational structure and the manager work in the public sector. Thus, the purpose of thispaper is to identify the role of the public administrator through administrative processes and management activities, with emphasis on the structure and strategies developed. As a methodology, the case study was adopted at the Universidade Estadual Paulista, Faculty of Science and Engineering of Tupã/SP, where the data were collected from free observation (3 months immersed), interviews and document analysis. Firsts results, there is a need for a formal and effective communication between administrative areas, which have their specific functions and are formalized in the organizational chart. Also, that the planning process is carried out from top to bottom and there is a greater participation of the executive coordination and of teachers than of technical-administrative servants and students, because of the Collegiate System Representation. It is also pointed out that, although strategic planning is formal and results in a formalized tactical and operational plan, the organization executes its activities based on short and medium-term demands, because of emerging actions that do not follow the established plan. Therefore, despite the existence of several unmapped processes, the unit administrators follow a logical and standardized flow of actions to achieve their goal.

This case study investigates into the role of the school librarians and their collaboration with other subject teachers in guiding primary four (P4) students through inquiry-based learning (IBL) group projects. To maximize the learning supports that students can get from doing the projects, the researchers of this study promote a close partnership between the school librarian and three other kinds of teachers (General Studies, Chinese, and Information Technology / IT) who can contribute to P4 General Studies’ group projects. The study tries to understand: (1). the effectiveness of the librarian-teacher partnership approach in helping students to learn from their project works, and (2). the issues and challenges encountered by students and teachers in the process of implementing such teaching and learning model.
