The Colombian creole cattle breed Blanco Orejinegro (BON) is an important zoogenetic resource, but there is little knowledge about the genetic parameters and trends of its reproductive traits. Therefore, the aim of this study was to estimate parameters for the reproductive traits calving interval (CI), age at first calving (AFC), gestation duration (GD) and genetic trends for CI in the BON breed. Genealogy information from 7,799 animals was used, and employing the MTDFREML program, the components of the variance, heritability (h2), repeatability (rep), and estimated breeding values (EBV) for CI (n=3308), AFC (n=729), and GD (n=306) were estimated, in addition to the inbreeding coefficient (F) of the population. Genetic trends were established through linear regression using R software. Finally, the animals were classified as inbred (F > 0) and noninbred (F=0), and the effect of inbreeding on reproductive performance was established through a generalized linear model using the R program. An average F value of 4.41%±0.06 was observed. The h2 for CI was 0.11±0.03 with a rep of 0.15±0.04; for AFC, h2 was 0.00±0.05; and for GD, h2 was 0.00±0.08. The genetic trend for CI was -0.01 days/year. Finally, for CI, inbreeding depression was evident; this trait increased when inbreeding increased. These results indicate an important environmental influence on reproductive traits. The heritability estimate for CI suggests that little genetic progress could be achieved through selection. The evidence of inbreeding depression raises the need to control inbreeding to conserve this genetic resource.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters and genetic trends for reproductive traits in Wistar rats. A total of 1,167 data records from 283 females over six generations of monogamous mating pairs was used. Heritability and genetic correlation were estimated through Bayesian inference and genetic trends were calculated by linear regression of breeding values over generations. Heritability estimates for litter size at birth (LS), calving interval (CI), pup mortality (PM) and maternal cannibalism (CAN) presented low magnitude, ranging from 0.01 to 0.13. CAN presented high and positive genetic correlation with LS and PM (0.77 and 0.78, respectively). On the other hand, all the other estimated genetic correlations were not significant. Genetic trend was positive for LS (+0.0900 pups per generation), and negative for PM and CAN (-1.0085 and -0.5217 pups per generation, respectively). For CI the genetic trend was not significant. It is recommended to increase selection intensity on dams in this Wistar rat population in order to accelerate the genetic progress.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the genetic parameters and genetics trends for birth and weaning weights, and to quantify the inbreeding characteristics for a population of Zandi sheep. Genetic parameters from both single- and two-trait analyses were estimated using restricted maximum likelihood (REML) with animal models. Genetic trends were estimated by averaging estimated breeding values on year of birth. Full pedigree was analyzed for estimation of inbreeding characteristics. The results obtained confirmed relatively low additive genetic variation in the population, especially for weaning weight. Estimates of direct and maternal heritability were 0.12 and 0.20 for birth weight and 0.08 and 0.02 for weaning weight, respectively. Estimates of breeding value averaged by year of birth for birth weight and weaning weight increased over time. However, there was little genetic progress for birth weight (0.002 kg yr-1), whereas the tendency for weaning weight was 0.020 kg yr-1. Inbred animals consisted of 25% of the population. The effective population size (Ne) was 66 individuals. The inbreeding rate per generation (ΔF) was 0.76%. The average value of inbreeding (F) in the Zandi population was 1.05% and the average relatedness (AR) coefficient reached 1.64% in the whole pedigree. A range of 2.84 to 4.01 yr was obtained for the average generation interval in different pathways. Selection of rams with the lowest AR was recommended for better management of inbreeding and avoidance of relative mating. In this study, genetic parameters, macro environmental factors and genetic, phenotypic and environmental trends for actual and 305 day milk yield of Brown Swiss cattle reared in Research Farm of Agricultural College at Atatürk University were estimated. Estimated breeding values that were used for calculation of the genetic trend and genetic parameters were estimated by using MTDFREML computer package program. Environmental factors affecting on actual and 305day milk yields were analysed by using Harvey statistic package program. While effects of the years and parities on the actual and 305-day milk yields were highly significant, the influence of the calving season was found to be insignificant. Environmental and phenotypic trends for actual and 305-day milk yields were determined as -33.2 kg and -29.0 kg; and -27.8±19.1 kg/year and -25.9±8.7 kg/year respectively. Genetic trends for actual and 305-day milk yields were calculated as 5.4±3.8 kg and 3.1±3.4 kg. Heritability’s for actual and 305-day milk yields were 0.21±0.12 and 0.16±0.14 respectively. Repeatability values for actual and 305-day milk yield were found as 0.29 and 0.33 respectively.

Data collected from Canadian central test stations were used to obtain estimates of genetic progress for test station average daily gain (ADG-T), height at hooks (HH), ultrasonically measured backfat thickness midway between the 11th and 12th ribs (FAT) and scrotal circumference (SC). Where possible, records for preweaning average daily gain (ADG-W) from the Federal-Provincial Herd Record of Performance program were obtained for tested bulls. Estimated breeding values were regressed on year of birth to obtain estimates of genetic trend for each trait, for the six principal breeds enrolled in the testing program: Aberdeen Angus (AA), Charolais (CH), Hereford (HE), Limousin (LM), Shorthorn (SH) and Simmental (SM). Estimated trends were generally significant with the exception of those for the LM breed, and the trait of SC. For FAT, trends were generally positive for the exotic breeds, and negative for the British breeds. Significant positive trends were observed for HH, ADG-W and ADG-T for most breeds. Examples of estimated genetic trends, for the HE breed, were 0.0022 kg d−1 yr−1, 0.0023 kg d−1 yr−1, 0.090 cm yr−1 (NS), − 0.029 mm yr−1, and 0.009 cm yr−1 (NS), respectively, for ADG-W, ADG-T, HH, FAT and SC (NS = not significant). Most estimated trends were low, in the order of 0.1 to 0.5% of population mean per year. Key words: Genetic trend, central test stations, beef bulls

The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence and heritability of elbow dysplasia in the Estrela mountain dog breed, to investigate genetic trends over the last 20 years (1990–2009) and to evaluate the association of individual records with breeding values. The elbows of 351 Estrela mountain dogs were examined using the flexed mediolateral radiographic view and evaluated using the International Elbow Working Group scoring system. Heritability and breeding values were estimated using a linear model. Elbow Dysplasia was found in 16.5% (59/351) of the dogs; males (27%, 34/127) were more affected than females (11%, 24/224) (P < 0.05). The heritability was very low (0.065) and the genetic trend showed a slight positive slope with an improvement in 2004 and 2005. The mean breeding values in elbow dysplasia grades were different but the overlap among grades was very pronounced. The prevalence and heritability of elbow dysplasia in the breed are thus low. Mass selection using individual phenotypes may not be effective. Elbow dysplasia genetic trends are similar to trends for hip dysplasia and passive hip laxity, so the use of selection against hip dysplasia may also result in genetic progress for elbow dysplasia.

Reproductive efficiency is an important issue in horse breeding. However, almost no estimates of genetic parameters of reproductive traits in horses can be found in the literature. The objective of the study was to estimate heritability and genetic trends of foaling rate and number of reproductive seasons in Warmblood horses. The records of 3965 mares from six studs were analyzed. Mares were on average kept for 7.3 reproductive seasons with a foaling rate of 66%. Models included fixed effects of stud, period of birth, breed and random additive genetic effect. Heritability estimates were 0.12 for foaling rate and 0.17 for number of reproductive seasons. Abstract. Genetic parameters, inbreeding depression and genetic trends were estimated for average daily gain between the ages of 5-10 weeks and thigh muscle volume (measured in vivo with computerized tomography) in a group of 22 098 Pannon terminal line rabbits born between 2006 and 2011 and reared in 3 396 litters. The data sets were analysed with bi-variate animal models taking pedigree completeness (complete generation equivalent) into account. By 2011, all rabbits were inbred and the average inbreeding coefficient and complete generation equivalent of the population were 7.69 % and 11.89 %, respectively. Estimated heritability was moderate both for average daily gain (0.23±0.02) and thigh muscle volume (0.25±0.03). Litter effects were low for both traits (0.16±0.00 and 0.09±0.01 respectively). The genetic correlation coefficient estimate between average daily gain and thigh muscle volume was also low (0.02±0.08). Significant inbreeding depression (per 10 % inbreeding) was only detected for average daily gain (0.57 g/d). The estimated annual selection response was substantial both for average daily gain and thigh muscle volume (1.49 g/d and 5.84 cm3, respectively), proving the efficiency of the breeding programme.

Abstract Frame score (FS) systems for beef cattle generally represent the relationships among growth, body composition, reproduction and mature size, in a simple and practical form. This study aimed to: 1) develop a FS system for Nelore cattle that is biologically sound, easy to interpret, and useful for producers; and 2) estimate the genetic parameters of the FS with productive and reproductive traits. An arbitrary scale (1 to 12) was devised so that each unit corresponds to 15 kg of carcass weight (1 @), as this is a common measure used for marketing beef cattle in Brazil. Therefore, ideal carcass weight, defined as having 6 mm of backfat, would be 18 @ (269 kg) and 15 @ (224 kg) for FS = 6 males and females, respectively. Data from 36,030 animals (22,405 males, 13,565 females) raised on pasture were obtained from participating herds of the National Association of Breeders and Researchers (ANCP). Genetic parameters were estimated in uni- and bicharacteristic analyses under an animal model, using the EM-REML algorithm (AIREMLF90) and Bayesian inference (GIBBS1F90). The heritability estimate for the new FS was 0.38, and its additive genetic correlations were 0.70, 0.72, 0.77, 0.33, -0.57, 0.27, and 0.28 with BW at 365 d, BW at 450 d, hip height, longissimus muscle area, subcutaneous fat thickness, scrotal circumference at 450 d, and age at first calving, respectively. The estimated heritability and genetic correlations indicate that there is enough additive genetic variability to allow for genetic response to selection. The estimates support the notion that larger frame animals are taller, heavier, leaner and later maturing, both in body composition as well as sexually. The new frame score may be a useful tool for genetic selection of animals that are best suited to their environment.
