Development of high frequency cw gyrotrons (Gyrotron FU CW Series) as high power THz radiation sources was advanced in FIR FU on the basis of the success in the development and application of the previous Gyrotron FU series [1]. In this paper, we would introduce the development of high frequency gyrotrons in FIR FU and applications to high power THz technologies

Terahertz (THz) radiation sources are increasingly significant for many scientific frontiers, while the generation of THz radiation with high-power at wide-tunable frequencies is still a limitation for most existing methods. In this paper, a compact accelerator-based light source is proposed to produce coherent THz radiation with high pulse energy and tunable frequency from 0.1 THz to 60 THz. By using a frequency beating laser-modulated electron beam and undulator taper, intense coherent THz radiation can be generated through undulators. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations demonstrate that the proposed technique can generate narrow-bandwidth THz radiation with a pulse energy up to 6.3 millijoule (mJ) and the three-dimensional effects of beam has limited influence on its performance. The proposed technique will open up new opportunities for THz spectroscopic and time-resolved experiments.

In the ELBE Center for High-Power Radiation Sources, the superconducting linear electron accelerator ELBE, serving two free electron lasers, sources for intense coherent THz radiation, mono-energetic positrons, electrons, γ-rays, a neutron time-of-flight system as well as two synchronized ultra-short pulsed Petawatt laser systems are collocated. The characteristics of these beams make the ELBE center a unique research instrument for a variety of external users in fields ranging from material science over nuclear physics to cancer research, as well as scientists of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR).

The Smith-Purcell radiation of a charged particle moving in a periodic structure is analysed theoretically. The considered structure consists of two planar diffraction gratings with different periods which are formed by parallel conducting wires. The analytical expression for the spectral-angular distribution of radiation is obtained. It is shown that the angular distribution of radiation can be made narrower by using two gratings instead of one, and radiation intensity can be manipulated by parallel relative shift of gratings. The obtained results are of great importance for the research and development of high power radiation sources based on volume free-electron lasers.
