Development of improved inelastic displacement prediction equations for the seismic design of hybrid systems

The use of hybrid joints to provide pre-cast concrete and timber structures with ductile response and self-centering capability is becoming increasingly popular in New Zealand, as is evident by the increasing number of building solutions that incorporate the technology as well as the design provisions for hybrid systems currently included in the New Zealand Concrete standard. This paper raises some issues with the current code approach to estimate the inelastic seismic displacement demand on hybrid systems. The work then presents the results of a series of non-linear time history analyses of single degree of freedom (SDOF) systems characterised by the flag-shaped hysteretic rule, in order to identify a general, improved expression for the equivalent viscous damping of hybrid systems. The new equivalent viscous damping expression is expected to provide more reliable control of inelastic displacement demands for hybrid systems design used Displacement-Based Design (DBD) procedures. In addition, the last part of the paper also discusses how the findings in the paper could be utilised to provide improved control of displacement demands when hybrid systems are designed using force-based procedures.

An innovative application of Direct Displacement-Based Design (DBD) is presented for a modern 8-storey dual system structure consisting of interior concrete walls in parallel to a number of large steel eccentrically braced frames, fitted with visco-elastic dampers at link positions. The innovative DBD methodology lets the designer directly control the forces in the structure by choosing strength proportions at the start of the design procedure. The strength proportions are used to establish the displaced shape at peak response and thereby establish the equivalent single-degree-of-freedom system design displacement, mass and effective height. A new simplified formulation for the equivalent viscous damping of systems possessing viscous dampers is proposed which also utilises the strength proportions chosen by the designer at the start of the process. The DBD approach developed is relatively quick to use, enabling the seismic design of the 8-storey case study structure to be undertaken without the development of a computer model. To verify the ability of the design method, non-linear time-history analyses are undertaken using a suite of spectrum-compatible accelerograms. These analyses demonstrate that the design solution successfully achieves the design objectives to limit building deformations, and therefore damage.

This paper discusses different formulations for calculating earthquake-induced displacement demands to be associated with nonlinear static analysis procedures for the assessment of masonry structures. Focus is placed on systems with fundamental periods between 0.1 and 0.5 s, for which the inelastic displacement amplification is usually more pronounced. The accuracy of the predictive equations is assessed based on the results from nonlinear time-history analyses, carried out on single-degree-of-freedom oscillators with hysteretic force–displacement relationships representative of masonry structures. First, the study demonstrates some limitations of two established approaches based on the equivalent linearization concept: the capacity spectrum method of the Dutch guidelines NPR 9998-18, and its version outlined in FEMA 440, both of which overpredict maximum displacements. Two codified formulations relying on inelastic displacement spectra are also evaluated, namely the N2 method of Eurocode 8 and the displacement coefficient method of ASCE 41-17: the former proves to be significantly unconservative, while the latter is affected by excessive dispersion. A non-iterative procedure, using an equivalent linear system with calibrated optimal stiffness and equivalent viscous damping, is then proposed to overcome some of the problems identified earlier. A recently developed modified N2 formulation is shown to improve accuracy while limiting the dispersion of the predictions.

AbstractThe seismic performance of precast portal frames typical of the industrial and commercial sector could be generally improved by providing additional mechanical devices at the beam-to-column joint. Such devices could provide an additional degree of fixity and energy dissipation in a joint generally characterized by a dry hinged connection, adopted to speed-up the construction phase. Another advantage of placing additional devices at the beam-to-column joint is the possibility to act as a fuse, concentrating the seismic damage on few sacrificial and replaceable elements. A procedure to design precast portal frames adopting additional devices is provided herein. The procedure moves from the Displacement-Based Design methodology proposed by M.J.N. Priestley, and it is applicable for both the design of new structures and the retrofit of existing ones. After the derivation of the required analytical formulations, the procedure is applied to select the additional devices for a new and an existing structural system. The validation through non-linear time history analyses allows to highlight the advantages and drawbacks of the considered devices and to prove the effectiveness of the proposed design procedure.

Despite global analysis of umbilicals is a well-known area in the offshore systems design, some topics are still opened for discussions. One of these topics refers to the structural damping. Obviously, the viscous damping caused by hydrodynamic drag forces is the major source of damping to the whole system. However, in some severe load cases, the host vessel dynamics may induce high snatch loads to the umbilical top end and these loads are more related to structural damping, specifically in tension–elongation hysteresis, than to viscous damping. The snatch loads must be taken into account in the whole design process, which leads to an umbilical designed to resist to higher tension loads and implies also, in most cases, in over-dimensioned accessories, such as the bending limiters. Actually, due to the high level of friction between layers, the umbilical presents some level of structural damping which is, in fact, related to hysteretic moment-curvature and tension-elongation relations. This intrinsic structural damping may in fact contribute to the reduction of the snatch loads and considering it may reduce the level of conservatism in the design. However, due to the complexity and diversity of umbilical designs, it is not straightforward to come up with general-use hysteretic curves. A simplification then is to apply classic Rayleigh damping. Typically, damping levels of 5% are accepted in the offshore industry when using stiffness-proportional Rayleigh damping (the 5% damping is a percentage of the critical damping and is accounted for at the regular wave period or irregular wave spectral peak period). The problem here is that stiffness-proportional Rayleigh damping increases linearly with the frequency and the damping level at 1Hz, for example, may get to 60%. This fact indicates that the high-frequency part of the response may be simply discarded from the results, which in turn may lead to an incorrect, over-damped analysis. The present work aims tackling the Rayleigh damping issue, evaluating its effects on tension levels and spectral density of the tension time history. A recommendation of how to apply Rayleigh damping is proposed.

Reinforced concrete coupled walls are a common lateral load resisting system used in multi-storey buildings. The effect of the coupling beams can improve seismic performance, but at the same time adds complexity to the design procedure. A case study coupled wall building is designed using Force-Based Design (FBD) and Direct Displacement-Based Design (DDBD) and in the case of the latter a step by step design example is provided. Distributed plasticity fibre-section beam element numerical models of the coupled walls are developed in which coupling beams are represented by diagonal truss elements and experimental results are used to confirm that this approach can provide a good representation of hysteretic behaviour. The accuracy of the two different design methods is then assessed by comparing the design predictions to the results of non-linear time-history analyses. It is shown that the DDBD approach gives an accurate prediction of inter-storey drift response. The FBD approach, in accordance with NZS1170.5 and NZS3101, is shown to include an impractical procedure for the assignment of coupling beam strengths and code equations for the calculation of coupling beam characteristics appear to include errors. Finally, the work highlights differences between the P-delta considerations that are made in FBD and DDBD, and shows that the code results are very sensitive to the way in which P-delta effects are accounted for.

This study aims to provide a comparison and identify the key distinctions between the New Zealand Standard – Earthquake Actions (NZS 1170.5: 2004) seismic design spectra and the hysteresis-damped seismic demand spectra specified by either the New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering (NZSEE) “Assessment and Improvement of the Structural Performance of Buildings in Earthquakes” (AISPBE) Guidelines, or the “Displacement-Based Seismic Design of Structures” (DBSDS) textbook by Priestley et al. (2007). The damping provided by the draft document, “The Seismic Assessment of Existing Buildings” (TSAEB), was also briefly discussed. The seismic design spectrum was calculated for various levels of ductility using all three methods and compared against each other. This was performed for structural elastic periods from 0.1 to 4.5 seconds. For a given set of requirements based on the NZS 1170.5 parameters, a representative acceleration-displacement hysteresis loop has been generated. The equivalent viscous damping was then calculated based on the area under this hysteresis using the recommendations of either the AISPBE or through the damping equations based on the DBSDS. The final damped spectra were then compared with each other and against the NZS 1170.5 design spectrum. Results indicate good correlation between the NZS 1170.5 design spectra and the damped design spectra at low levels of ductility but show significant disparities at higher levels of ductility.
