The multi-modal formulation of Koiter's asymptotic method provides a systematic and efficient procedure to evaluate the initial post-buckling behaviour and to assess the nonlinear behavior of structures. This manuscript presents a displacement-based multi-modal formulation of Koiter's method for cylindrical shells, which are structures known for their high imperfection sensitivity and for having clustered bifurcation modes that highly interact. A third-order interpolation is used for the in-plane and out-of-plane displacements by means of the Bogner-Fox-Schmit-Castro (BFSC) element, with 4 nodes and 10 degrees-of-freedom per node, aiming at an accurate representation of the second-order fields required in the initial post-buckling analysis. The single-curvature of the shell is considered in the finite element kinematics and the study includes nonlinear kinematics from Von Kármán and Sanders. The mesh is obtained by closing the circumferentially oriented coordinate at the position where the mesh completes one revolution about the shell perimeter. The proposed formulation and implementation is verified in detail by comparing results for composite shells against established literature for multi-mode asymptotic expansions. A fast convergence of the proposed formulation is observed for linear buckling, pre-buckling state and the initial post-buckling coefficients. The developed formulation enables a close relationship between formulae and the implemented code, and is implemented using state-of-the-art collaborative software. The authors made the implemented routines in a publicly available data set with the aim to popularize Koiter's method.

Abstract Buckling tests were conducted using slender specimens of western hemlock. In the tests, the slenderness ratio was varied from 132 to 418 in which elastic buckling was induced, and the values of the critical load for buckling were obtained. When the deflection of the specimen was calculated from the loading-line displacement based on elastica theory, the value of deflection/load initially decreased because the compressive deformation was more dominant than the bending deformation. In contrast, when the load increased, the bending deformation became dominant, and the deflection/load-deflection relation exhibited linearity. These tendencies indicated that the transition from compression to bending was induced around the minimum value of the deflection/load. Therefore, it was recommended to determine the critical load for buckling using the load at the minimum value of the deflection/load where the deflection was calculated from the loading-line displacement.

Recently, there has been an increasing emphasis on the Indirect bridge health monitoring method employing passing vehicles, which is regarded as one of the most effective approaches in bridge damage screening. However, few researches have been conducted on the drive-by bridge inspection method using vehicle displacement profile as damage indicator. This paper proposes a new drive-by inspection method based on vertical vehicle displacementprofile with parameter optimization. A generalized Vehicle-Bridge Interaction (VBI) system is built in MATLAB, where the bridge is modelled as a simply supported beam with 10 elements, and the passing vehicle is represented as a simplified quarter car. To improve the result sensitivity to bridge damage, the parameter optimization of vehicle configuration is processed employing the Monte Carlo methods. Results show that the proposed method can successfully detect and localize bridge damage by using vertical vehicle displacement profile as damage indicator only, and its performance may depend on the vehicle configuration. The proposed approach provides merits in simplicity and efficiency, which can be applied widely to the bridge damage detection problems.

Abstract Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is a valuable practical tool in many optical science areas. In particular, high-contrast MZI are required for experimental realization of displacement-based quantum receivers that can discriminate weak coherent states of light with the minimum error rate. In this work we study phase modulators of tunable on-chip interferometer on silicon nitride (Si3N4) platform for telecom wavelength (1550 nm) consisting of several MZI. Phase modulators on one of the arms of MZI consists of microheaters and waveguide. Microheaters heat waveguides changing its refractive index due to thermo-optical effect providing a phase shift. We measure the bandwidth of phase modulators and study their operation in pulse mode.
