<p>Qualitative research strategy has been widely adopted by educational researchers in order to improve the quality of their empirical studies. This paper aims to introduce a generic inductive approach, pragmatic and flexible in qualitative theoretical support, by describing its application in a study of non-English major undergraduates’ English learning transition from school to university in China. Through an analysis of how this case study was conducted, the main features of the generic inductive approach are discussed in detail. Subsequently, some suggestions for its effective use are put forward so that this approach can help to provide meaningful interpretive power to make sense of the findings in educational research.</p>

In the process of constructing post-2015 development global frameworks, education is increasingly seen globally to be a powerful tool for preparing students to enter the labor market as well as to create a peaceful and sustainable society. International and comparative educational research conducted on the achievement of the EFA goals has clearly revealed that despite important efforts accomplished in many countries, there are still serious challenges in terms of the quality of education that is offered. The paper examines the extent to which a minimum Quality of Education for All (QEFA) can be reached through effective use and application of evidence-based international and comparative educational research. Global efforts to attain QEFA are examined by investigating major international surveys of learning outcomes. The case of Arab states demonstrates diverse socio economic and political contexts of each country and should be reflected in regional strategies to achieve QEFA. Evidence from data on national, regional and international assessments indicates that low achievement is globally widespread and stronger government intervention will be needed. The current status of laboratory-based teaching is reviewed, and found to be in decline. It is argued that in educational terms, this trend is undesirable and threatens the quality of engineering courses. The effectiveness of laboratory work can be assured by adopting an appropriate methodology, and an attempt has been made to identify its key elements. A class currently operating at Strathclyde is described as a case study. It is concluded that laboratories are at present under-used and under-valued but, if exploited imaginatively, they can make a major contribution to engineering education.

In this paper, we analyse false death announcements of public figures on social media and public responses to them. The analysis draws from a range of public sources to collect and categorise the volume of false death announcements on Twitter and undertakes a case study analysis of representative examples. We classify false death announcements according to five overarching types: accidental; misreported; misunderstood; hacked; and hoaxed. We identify patterns of user responses, which cycle through the sharing of the news, to personal grief, to a sense of uncertainty or disbelief. But we also identify more critical and cultural responses to such death announcements in relation to misinformation and the quality of digital news, or cultures of hoax and disinformation on social media. Here we see the performance of online identity through a form that we describe, following Bourdieu as ‘platform cultural capital’.

The article presents realization stages of the Assessment Center process for the sales representative in a large manufacturing company, which has an established position and is the leader of its industry on the Polish market. Over two years three selection processes were done using the Assessment Center method in the sales department of surveyed company. Each time the goal was to obtain at least one sales representative who would join the existing nine person team. Both in the case of the first and second recruitment, the candidates selected by the assessors did not meet expectations and after the trial period the contract was not renewed. During third recruitment process, the Assessment Center method was also used, however, the process was carried out in accordance with the standards set out in the Guidelines and Ethical Considerations for Assessment Center Operations. This contributed to increasing the effectiveness of selection, the goal was achieved and two new employees were recruited, who continued their work after the trial period. The aim of the article is to evaluate the conditions of effective use of the Assessment Center method in the selection of candidates for the position of a sales representative, based on literature and empirical studies.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the fundamental barriers/challenges, benefits, commonly used tools and techniques, organisational infrastructure and impact on organisational performance in three Indian manufacturing companies. Design/methodology/approach A multi-case study analysis using the exploratory case study research was adopted by the authors to obtain a deeper insight into the Six Sigma implementation within three distinctive manufacturing organisations in India. Interviews were conducted with relevant staff (Six Sigma Deployment Champions, Six Sigma Master Black Belts and Six Sigma Black Belts) in all three companies. Findings Some of the barriers in implementing and sustaining Six Sigma identified from the case studies include: lack of accuracy of data generated from the processes, lack of understanding of the benefits of Six Sigma in the early stages of its adoption, high-attrition rate of Six Sigma Black Belts and so on. The benefits of Six Sigma included improvement of process yield, reduction of rework and rejection, reduction of raw material inventory, improved on-time delivery, on-time availability of material for production and so on. Supplier-input-process-output-customer, cause and effect diagram, process mapping, hypothesis tests (two sample test, F-test, etc.), control charts (X-bar-R chart, individual chart, etc.), simple graphical tools such as histograms, box plots and dot plots were the most commonly used tools of Six Sigma across the companies that participated for this research. All three companies have reported that Six Sigma had a positive impact on organisational performance and moreover the study also revealed that Six Sigma had positive impact on customer satisfaction, return-on-investment, productivity and product quality. Research limitations/implications The study was carried out in three Indian companies and therefore the findings cannot be generalised. The authors are extending the study to three more companies and the findings will be reported in the forthcoming months. Practical implications The findings of the study provide a good foundation to understand the fundamental barriers, benefits, commonly used tools and whether Six Sigma is having any impact on business performance in the Indian context. Very few empirical studies have been carried out on Six Sigma implementation in the Indian manufacturing companies and this research sets an agenda for a number of studies to follow on in the forthcoming years. Originality/value In authors’ opinion, this is possibly one of the first multi-case empirical studies on Six Sigma implementation in the Indian manufacturing companies. The results of the study can be used to benchmark with similar studies in other countries to understand the good and bad management practices of Six Sigma implementation.

Environmental impact assessment (EIA) report, the final output of the EIA process forms the basis for environmental impact statement (EIS) review and decision-making, implying the need for its good quality. This empirical study is based on the literature review, opinions of EIA consultants, and views of experts associated with the EIA system in India. It is inferred that the overall quality of the EIS is below par and there are several inadequacies in the EIA appraisal system. Given the strong correlation between a robust EIS review system and a good quality EIS, a two-tier structured, transparent, and criteria-based review mechanism based on good practices is suggested. Further, it is crucial to adopt a professional approach for appraisal and capacity building of the professionals engaged in conducting the EIA and reviewing the EIS.

Recent research indicates that during the design of teleinformatic system the tradeoff between the systems performance and the system protection should be made. The traditional approach assumes that the best way is to apply the strongest possible security measures. Unfortunately, the overestimation of security measures can lead to the unreasonable increase of system load. This is especially important in multimedia systems where the performance has critical character. In many cases determination of the required level of protection and adjustment of some security measures to these requirements increase system efficiency. Such an approach is achieved by means of the quality of protection models where the security measures are evaluated according to their influence on the system security. In the paper, we propose a model for QoP evaluation of security mechanisms. Owing to this model, one can quantify the influence of particular security mechanisms on ensuring security attributes. The methodology of our model preparation is described and based on it the case study analysis is presented. We support our method by the tool where the models can be defined and QoP evaluation can be performed. Finally, we have modelled TLS cryptographic protocol and presented the QoP security mechanisms evaluation for the selected versions of this protocol.

This chapter focuses on the metabolic concept for the management and treatment of construction waste and organic fraction of municipal solid waste in urban areas. Analysis of related Dutch, German and Polish guidelines for environmental zoning of industrial plants, allows formulation of conditions for an optimal siting of waste infrastructure within urban unit. Protection zones are defined in accordance with specific requirements for waste facilities, which treat and recycle both municipal and construction waste. Distances from inhabited areas are related to environmental burdens generated by such facilities (incl. parameters such as odours, noise level, explosion impacts and emissions of other substances). Moreover, this chapter provides the analysis of a selected case studies of waste facilities processing. A comparison of European guidelines and implementation of practical solutions is described in the case study analysis, including the issues open for the discussion about sustainable siting for waste processing infrastructure within an urban unit.

ISO 9000 is a quality management system widely used. ISO 9000 has begun being implemented in Malaysia's IPT since the 1990s as one of the initiatives for quality assurance. While the number of HEIs in Malaysia that are implementing ISO 9000 is increasing, however, empirical studies of the implementation of the system are still underdeveloped. Therefore, the objective of this article is to study the implementation steps of ISO 9000 quality management system at Malaysian HEI. This study uses a qualitative approach by using case study as a research strategy. A public HEI located in Selangor was chosen as a research location. This study uses a semi-structured interview method carried out on fifteen informants who are actively involved in the implementation of ISO 9000. The informants represent the categories of faculty management, quality coordinator and lecturers. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis method which was assisted by Nvivo software. The research finding show that the implementation of ISO 9000 in the HEI involves seven steps; organizational context analysis, training, leadership, development of work groups, implementation, monitoring and improvement. All these steps have been well implemented with participation from all faculty members. The results of this study contribute to the development of knowledge related to the implementation of ISO 9000: 2015 in Malaysian HEI.  The research findings can be employed as a guideline to university administrators, public sector officers or corporate managers in their effort to implement ISO 9000 effectively in their respective organizations.
